For a quarter of a century the financial management of Cambridge United has been nothing short of scandalous. We lost our ground, got relegated to non league, and nearly went bust in 2005, and were rescued by the fans. We were told that would never happen again. It has.
The year before last we were led to believe that we were breaking even, or nearly. Then we sold two of our best players last year, and were suddenly half a million in debt. This year we needed a striker, and were told the directors had to put the money up so we could be in the room. They were doing us a favour, despite the directors being responsible for the situation we were in.
Some years ago, it came to light that our directors thought the fans were wrong on every way, on every subject, and refuse to communicate on any level. There has been an audit, the result of which is unknown, it is clear though that the money has been hosed away by a miracle worker who kept the club alive, and now works for Lincoln. And is probably very rich. He went missing last year, during the season to watch the Ashes series. When he came back, nothing happened. He was welcomed by the board when Lincoln visited this season.
The losses have been made up by the owner who lives in Seattle. He doesnt seem to care about the serious black hole that envelops the club, and keeps stumping up. I would like to know how much you know about how your club is run. The normal routine so to speak is for local businesses to support the finances of the local team. It seems to be the other way round at Cambridge.
As far as im concerned the club is unsupportable under the current set of directors, whatever is happening wont stop. I have a season ticket but wont be buying another. Its important that supporters are aware of how clubs are run, do you know how yours is run.?
Cambridge has an impenetrable veil of secrecy.
