My first match thread of the new forum :D

After a couple of really hard fought victories I feel we're more prepared for this game, and the other difficult games that follow than we were a couple of weeks ago. Still this is the beginning of a very tough period for us.

The game will be a battle, we've taken to playing physical combative football recently as we need to just stay up... I hear Shrewsbury are quite a physical side themselves although Curle characterises them in his pre-match interview as playing 'sexy football'. I expect nothing from this game, but a creditable one-goal defeat where we're not out of sight wouldn't be the end of the world... It definitely won't be a draw as we don't do draws.

For those on here who enjoy a good Keith Curle quote before a game, we have this.
We’re going to get in their shorts. I don’t mean that in a sexy way. We’re going to get as close to them as physically possible.

Wyke to score again hopefully.

Will be a tough game, but we're capable of getting the 3 points. A third win on the bounce would be great, and would steer us further away from the bottom 2.

I'd start Kearns where Dempsey would've played, but I think Curle will start Potts.

I think we'll win 2-1, Wyke and Rigg to score, in a physical game.

might be cliche, but Anthony Griffith will have a point to prove against his former club too.

TAH is being assessed but I would have assumed he wouldn't be risked anyway. So that might mean.

So Sweeney drops to the bench as he did against Mansfield, because we can't play Sweeney AND have two up-front. Potts and Kearns both in for Sweeney and Dempsey... Buddle in for Troy, although another option might be to drop CMW back into defence, Potts in central midfield and Amoo on the right.

Bench: Hanford, Brough, Sweeney, Amoo, Beck, Asamoah, Gillies

Yeah, but Workington vs. Halifax Town was the original Grant Hold Derby.

Would be interesting to see Buddle play, apparently put in a good performance against Blackpool. Would rather him than Thirlwell at centre back anyway, and risking Troy would be dangerous.

Absolutely gutting that. Deserved a point at the very least. I'm not even annoyed or angry, just shocked. Our two commentators are completely lost for words.

Shrewsbury did that to us, too. They're either lucky or good to do it twice.
It's because the team believe right to the final whistle, mind given the chances we should have put away in the 2nd half before Carlisle scored, it should not have had to come to another late late show!

The way I felt after that second went in, I could have shot every one of the Shrewsbury bench.

On reflection, now I've calmed down a bit, on one hand Shrewsbury didn't deserve it, but on the other hand it shows that there is still that fragile nature in our squad and shows why they are where they are and we are where we are.

The key is to just ignore the game and move on..........its the old tale of the luck you get at the top or the bad luck you get at the bottom

Is nowt can be done now, just move on and take into account you'd been happy with 3 points from Tranmere/Shrewsbury and now aim to get 3 points from Luton/Wycombe.

I have to ask how many Carlisle fans do you reckon missed the last 2 goals because they always leave at 90 minutes or before.....some may still think Carlisle won 1-0 !!!!

A lot started to leave at 1-1, they probably seen the second as they were going out the exit.

I'd expect a further drop in our attendance for the next home game due to mass overdoses tonight.

What the actual fuck?

If we only judge the game on the first 94 minutes then it was an excellent performance... our best of the season even. Shrewsbury were among the best teams to come to Brunton Park this season, and the quality they had was evident so it wasn't as if we caught them on an off day. But they struggled to dictate the game, we governed the tempo of the match and Shrewsbury were stuck hoping that some individual brilliance or a mistake from us would see them through, but we didn't make many mistakes and when we did, or when Shrewsbury found a perfect pass, our goalkeeper was found to be on fine form, making saves he had to right to make. They must have thought it was like old versions of Football Manager when you get invincible goalie syndrome. It was end-to-end and while our rearguard held firm, we pressed them hard and broke quickly on the counterattack, it was tackle pass pass shot, Shrewsbury get the ball back, tackle pass pass shot and again, and Shrewsbury would get a bit of pass pass shot in themselves and both sides had some glorious opportunities, but eventually we got ourselves a goal, and a very well-worked one at that, and everything seemed to be going according to plan. Up to 15th in the table and table to look at the league table with some optimism.

Then Shrewsbury scored two and the referee blew his whistle and that was the end of that.. 2-1 Shrewsbury. Our big fault at the end was that for some reason we were still going for a second goal. Were we getting complacent? Did we think that we'd done such a number on them that we had nothing to fear? When you're a goal up with seconds on the clock, regardless of the caliber of the opposition you take it to the corner flag. It seemed that the error that led to their equaliser was the result of us rushing too much. We had a throw-in, and it seemed like a well won throw-in that would take some pressure off us and enable us to see out the last couple of minutes. The Shrewsbury player did the usual thing when the ball went out of racing after it so he could hand it straight to Matt Young and prevent us from timewasting; and then for some reason Young absorbed the Shrewsbury player's urgency, and took the throw as though his life depended on him taking it within the next two seconds. We gave the ball away in a bad area, Shrewsbury won a corner after forcing yet another good save from Dan Hanford... but then scored from the corner.

We thought that was a Shrewsbury equaliser scored with the last kick of the game (again) but it wasn't to be, there was enough time for one more kick, and to be honest it was all a blur, I'm not sure how Shrewsbury managed to get the ball straight from our kick-off into our area, but they did and next thing we knew it was 2-1.

We played well though, and if we can keep the performance levels up then Luton are going have to put in one hell of a performance to keep us out on Saturday.

I am really hopeful Carlisle will take points off Luton, pretty sure you are on an upward trend now even after tonight!

And another massive positive is the Wyke/Rigg partnership that seems to be forming. Out of Wyke and Barnett I know which one looked more like a £300,000 (I think) striker, and he's only 22!

Barnett was £100,000 by the way but I agree Wyke is a good signing, he always seems to like scoring against us as well!

I forgot to mention, Micky Mellon farted early on in the second half and it absolutely fucking stunk!! And before you ask, it was him alright, 100% - cos I was standing close to his dugout, I heard it and he was waving it away from his arse with his hand. My god it was vile, if you could sum up death in a smell, that would be it. Smelt like someone had slaughtered a cow and left it to rot up his shit hole. Eurgh!

Very very true I'd be surprised if they didn't, its them lucky breaks you get usually are the sign of title winners, dragging points from a game when it seemed lost.

Great performance from us, one that deserved 3 points. Hanford, Brough, CMW, Rigg and Wyke all played magnificently, Wyke took his goal very well. Him and Rigg look a great partnership at the moment, as do CMW and Griffith in front of the defence.

Potts was very poor and I was surprised he lasted the whole 90mins, imagine he will be benched again against Luton.

Stunning end to the game, when the 1st went in I still thought it'd be a decent point against one of the top sides, but we don't do draws. The ball just landed perfectly at the attackers (Collins?) feet and he couldn't really miss.

Could've been away from the relegation fight but we're right back into it :(

Could watch this all day: sorry Carlisle fans, still can't believe last night..!

How the game only had 1 goal up until the 90th minute is beyond me. Game could have ended 6-6!

That video doesn't even do the game justice. There were more chances for both sides. Surprising that the volley from Griffith that your keeper tipped onto the bar didn't make the highlights cut.
