Always thought he was a bit of a bellend. Well maybe if you weren't such a shit manager Tim you'd be developing English talent at a professional club instead of sat in a studio blaming the lower leagues for England not winning the world cup while simultaneously claiming personal credit for Harry Kane winning the golden boot.

There's too much depth and uniqueness to the English football pyramid for it to ever work.

Spain and Germany have pretty shallow league systems, I think? There isn't the strength or popularity there that we have here.

And people like Sherwood and others who support this idea tend to assume that lower league fans must care more about the England team than their own clubs, like surely our clubs play at such a low level that we couldn't actually support them in the way Premier League fans support clubs, after all, what is there to get excited about if you're never going to win the Champions League? Honestly, even if I turned out that Sherwood was right, I'd still not want to see B teams or feeder clubs, I'd just say, oh well, never mind I only care about England for a couple of weeks once every two years anyway, I can live with them underachieving.

The problem with top flight footballers and managers (and some fans frankly) is they think the only purpose of football is to serve those at the top.

Football at lower levels is about “your club” competing on a reasonably level playing field, about players earning similar to what the man in the terrace earns, there being terraces to stand on(!) etc. Most Lower league fans couldn’t give a toss on whether Ethan Ampadu gets a game anymore unless it helps their club. If Chelsea didn’t want to play him then they shouldn’t have signed him.

The bigger issue revolves around stockpiling players. There should be a limit on how many players you’re allowed to loan out at any one time - 35 or so at Chelsea was ludicrous.

The more games the better..... Get us those appearance fees to keep us going until Real Madrid offer £150m+ for him :£

If they brought in feeder teams into the lower league they would have a big advantage as the players would have the pampered lifestyle, way more coaches and much better facilities than the other clubs at that level. So it wouldn't be fair and chances are the "B" teams would just dominate

I presume like in Spain and Germany they wouldn't be promoted/relegated to the top division?

We've been down this line of thinking already and it didn't prove to be a popular idea.

Surely the way forward is to limit the top teams to a maximum squad size below first team level?

Let's say city are restricted to a development squad size of just 18, instead of the current 50+ they probably have. Those other 32+players would need club's, meaning they would filter down the league system and the better players would get contracts with championship clubs.
In turn, those championship clubs wouldn't need all the players they currently have and we would see quality filter down the league's to our level. More quality getting more game time would be good for the national side, and eventually city and the rest of the elite would pick them back up with a nice juicy transfer fee for the lower league club. Everyone is a winner.

Interesting idea - not sure what the Under 23 competition does for these bigger clubs.

Just means as you say they stockpile and probably keep a load of players who will never play for their 1st team really?

Then that filters downs to Under 18s/16s.

I know you guys don't like it but have any you seen or heard of any potential young stars you've played against in the Check trade trophy?

When we played Everton two years ago we played against that young, English player they signed for £13.5m, Oumar Niasse.

Thank God we've got the Checkatrade giving these young English players a chance.

As for Sherwood, the bloke's a numpty who just loves the sound of his own voice. As others have mentioned, the problem isn't game time for youngsters, it's the stockpiling by the big clubs.

That would result in them sharing the wealth across football, and where would the fun in that be?

There does seem to be more English players in the 'top' premier teams than I think you give credit for. Based on a quick search of the last match they played.

Liverpool 6 - Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Henderson, Milner, (Sturridge and Lallana on the bench)

Chelsea 2 (not surprising they do nothing for promoting English talent) Loftus-Cheek and Barkley on the bench

Man City 5 Walker, Stones, Sterling (Foden and Delph on the bench)

Spurs 7 - Trippier. Alli, Davies, Kane, (Rose, Winks and Walker-Peters on the bench - Rose and Winks came on as subs)

Man U 6 - Smalling, Shaw, Lingard (Rashford, Lee Grant (I'm assuming he is English) and Young on the bench)

Arsenal (another team doing nothing for promoting English talent) only Welbeck and Holding on their bench.

I have no objection to feeder clubs so long as they can be promoted to the top divisions.

Obviously, the people who spout this stuff have no objection to mucking up the league structure lower down the divisions so they cannot have an objection to the havoc it will cause if, for instance, Palace u23s found themselves in the premier league when the first team get relegated.

In that article Crawley gets mentioned in relation to Brighton. The last time I recall we had a player on loan from Brighton was Danny Marney when we were in the Southern League. Brighton loan players out just not to us.

All waffle but money talks.

He never lived in Gloucestershire as far as I recall, like Alastair Cook (Gloucester born Alastair Cook as per the local press) he was simply born in the county but his parents actually lived elsewhere and he grew up elsewhere.

Dier went to Portugal when he was about 10 and came through the academy at Sporting Clube de Portugal.

What were the actual benefits of the EPPP system to smaller clubs, and how has it helped anything?

Nothing.

It meant that lower league clubs lost their bargaining power and could only receive set amounts of money based on years in the youth system, appearances etc. And then that will also depend on the Category status of the 'selling' Club. There'll be a breakdown of it all somewhere.

And, of course, as you'll know, EPPP stops at L2 level and PL and FL Clubs can't take NL teams youth players for nothing.
