On the play-off thread Kenneth suggested that a Luton player was one of the best three players in the league. This got me thinking, so who do we think are the three best players this year?

I'd suggest Enda Stevens, John Marquis and Graham Carey. And it is no coincidence that their teams were automatically promoted.

So who are your top 3?

Hmm, Carey has to be one of the three but I'm unsure on the others. Watkins could be one of my other choices but I'll give it further thought. You can't exactly rate players after watching them in action just the one time, or twice at most and that's if you make the away games too.

McGeehan will go for £1m+ this summer and teams were still wanting to sign him even with a broken leg. That's why he's in the top 3. He's scored 22 in 65 games from central midfield in the last two seasons. He is still only 22 years old.

Jason Kennedy is easily in the top three, he's a 1 in 3 midfielder.

Jon Stead has scored 28 in the last 2 seasons and is always so far off the pace that you could class him as a central midfielder, that's why he's in the top 3.

It's hard to really judge when you only see other teams players 1 or 2 times a season but I remember Watkins at Exeter was insanely good against us so I'll go for him, but nobody else that I can really remember thinking wow against us so ill also go for Ollie Palmer and Lenell John Lewis. :2thumb:

It seems like a lot of the feted players in League 2 this year were attacking midfielders - Carey, McGeehan, Watkins (more an attacking mid than forward?).

As we're naming our own players I'll put forward an attacking midfielder better than those mentioned above - Luke Berry.

Marquis and Hylton were the only good forwards I saw last year. Normally you can choose from a few.

Think it is very subjective as most players at this level tend to be very inconsistent, plus we only get to see those on other teams at best 2 times year for the most of us I am guessing. On the basis of this seasons performances I'd expect Hylton, arsehole that he may be, to be the Luton player most would think of in this category.

Personally, I would not put McGeehan in the top 3 players in the division, he very well may be one of the top 3 most valuable given his age and potential but for me, and I know this is a criticism which our manager and many other Luton fans would bridle at, he doesnt offer enough of what a midfielder should offer outside of his goals. At times this season I felt his game suffered from his focus on scoring and he seemed to get a bit petulant when he didn't. Now that sounds a bit stupid as its what the game is about after all but he did have some games where he was just a bit too selfish and for me his passing and all around midfield play is not of the required level you would expect from a Championship midfielder, which he will undoubtedly will be very soon IMO, likely this summer you would think.

To be clear I still think he is a very talented, ascending young player and one I would absolutely love to have for the duration of next season with a team and midfield built around him, should that happen (it wont but ill indulge myself) in a years time I have no doubt he would be the first name on the list in this sort of conversation.

Plus after our shocking midfield this season, even with McGeehan, it feels wrong to have a Luton midfield player considered amongst "the top 3" in the division!!

20 odd goals in a side near the bottom means James Collins deserves to be in the discussion as does John Akinde. He definitely ripped us a new one at Crawley this year.

I thought Loft, at Mansfield, looked a very good defender against us. The goals we scored only happened when we managed to by-pass him.

We're going to struggle to hang on to watkins now. Assuming he goes we may need to do a little rebuilding next season.

If we hang on to Wheeler, sign Stacey permanently and get a quality new center midfielder to replace either James or Harley that would be an automatic promotion side. However if Wheeler goes along with Watkins we would be looking at a couple of new attacking midfielders on top of all that. Quite hard to find these kind of players unfortunately. :(

Other issues which are somewhat less urgent are: a new backup CB to replace TAH. Maybe a new LB to deputise for Woodman.

Carey, Watkins and Enda Stevens last season for me. Though I don't know the northern players too well.

Funnily enough none of those 3 are likely to be playing for the same clubs in the coming season. With one already gone. The joys of being a basement division team (even if you do get promoted).

Stevens is top quality, hence why he's moved up to the Championship and will undoubtedly be called up for Ireland soon. We won't be able to replace him.

Graham Carey is another who is easily too good for this division. Will be interesting to see how he fares in League One. I'd probably have Luke Berry of Cambridge as the other player to go in the top 3.

Carey was the difference in both the games we played against Plymouth this season. He's the one who's stood out the most against us this year. Wyke did for Carlisle also in the game at Brunton Park.

Oh and Ollie Palmer.

I'm surprised the top 3 players in the league don't all play for Luton, how could they not?

Brennan Dickenson seemed to have a cracking season for Colchester, but then again I am a touch biased on that one as I bloody love the bloke...

Yawn...................esp from spendthrift Mansfield .............How about Top 3 most valuable players? Does McGeehan warrant a contendership then. Prob gonna find out in the coming weeks what he's worth

Carlisle must have a couple of world class cb's to not need Ellis.

We conceded 68 goals last season, the worst in the top half of League Two. He wasn't good enough to to cement a place in that defence.

Our defence has been beyond useless for numerous seasons, if you read some of the match threads from last season you'll understand just how bad it was!

Beating Carlisle at the moment is really just a question of how many goals they will score against you. If you can keep them at only 2 or 3 congratulations, you've won.

Except Luton and Yeovil, our only 2 (TWO) clean sheets in the last 40 matches in all competitions. But yeah, I don't know how Luton never went up :pond:

Thought Ellis was solid - better organiser, communicator and positionally than Clough and decent in the air - but not great with the ball at his feet and seemed to play for the foul a bit too much for my liking (like at Lincoln when it didn't come off and Angol scored). I also don't think he was up against strikers that were as good as the season before (ie. in the play-offs this season it was Paul Benson, Cole Stockton, James Norwood as opposed to Ricky Miller, Omar Bogle and Padraig Amond).
