Not sure if this is the right place for this question Oak?
But Luton don't have to worry about either word anyway :woot:

Technically treble is a noun, triple is a verb... You triple something and it becomes a treble... original distinctions have been lost though and now they're both interchangeable.

thanks shoddy for taking the time to reply.....
somebody suggested that treble meant 3 of the same things or derivatives of the same thing..ie the phone no.
and that triple meant 3 things that are grouped together but not ness the same ie triple jump...
doh!!

Whyever would a Luton fan be asking such questions?

Don't forget, you're only a round away from being in the 5th round of the fa cup

Always up for a discussion on linguistics. Perhaps such a wide ranging and clearly popular topic deserves its own sub-forum.

Correct (as far as I'm aware) i.e. treble vodka / triple ice cream sundae (three different flavours)

In the above, it'd be Treble IMO.

Treble is used more often in the UK because that's our version of a Latin word. Triple is the French version of the same Latin word we took treble from.

It's quite a loose difference between both words and both are generally seen as acceptable. We've ended up with, and using, two words, which mean the same thing but down the line, someone, somewhere, has tried to differentiate them.

Well Googled (again, because you posted the same thing yesterday and then deleted it).

The OEC collects its information mainly from the web, no? Doesn't take into account speech, of which treble is used more than triple.

I had to double check. Thought I'd got it wrong.

Shouldn't have doubted myself as I virtually never am. I am a TRIPLE threat you see, got the looks, brains and muscle. :bdick:

Triple for me. Treble to me means that knob on stereo amps that boosts those high frequency sounds in music. Boom tssss...boom tssss...boom tssss.....

Seriously though, I'm with Luke. A treble if Man U win three cups, a triple if you want three shots of vodka to go with your Red Bull.

It's not even the same in sports. In football you can get the treble but in other sports you get the triple crown.

actually..a question for both of you....due to your teams success in the league and cups over the past year or two...
would you say your crowds have nearly trebled or tripled as a result?

I would say Lincoln's crowds have trebled cos of all the bandwagoners. Our haven't tripled cos we only attract proper fans.

We scored triple the amount of goals FGR scored in our play off final, does that count?
