This news is a few days old now and I looked in expecting to see some comments on the decision, bearing in mind that England are going to be taking part in a tournament that will include a referral system toward which fans, players, managers and pundits here have almost to a man, been deeply hostile.
OK, so we've kicked the backside out of the trials that have been conducted in this country. It's unlikely it will be introduced into the Premier League or other cup competitions next season. But might this refusal-to-play-ball not put England at a disadvantage in international competition..?
Let's face it, England don't have many friends in world football. We don't exactly go out of our way to endear ourselves to our hosts and we're a target for every hooligan group everywhere.
I can't help thinking that, when push comes to shove in the very close calls.... when it's a 50/50 shout that could go either way..... England might just not get the favourable outcomes.
Would it not be better if we were seen to be wanting to work WITH they system, rather than being openly hostile towards it and critical of those who are trying to implement it..? All that achieves is to rub people up the wrong way and turn them against us, while our opponents make a big show of being accepting and compliant. Grovelling bastards maybe, but if it gets them that big call in a game.......
I'm probably being just paranoid, but might it not be better if the FA started some good PR over this..? And our players start learning to work with it instead of bucking against it.
