"We should be beating the likes of..."
If there's one phrase that does my nut in ...this is it.
Are teams in the "likes of" category put there due to their crowd attendances or lack of past glories?
Some of these "lack ofs" have always shown great resilience when
Playing us..getting results that confound the radio commentators.
On the other hand..."the likes of"
Portsmouth,Plymouth,Luton,Carlisle shouldn't be losing to "the likes of" morecambe,Accrington Stanley or Crawley to name a few .
why is it that we rarely get a result when playing either of the "likes of" groups?
Which one of these groups do you think your team belongs in???
Those that punch above their weight season after season....
Or those that live on past memories and are not as good as we think they should be??
So depressing having memories of the good old days!!

It only should be used whenever you fail to beat a nothing team currently doing shit who are lower than you in the football pyramid, it shouldn't have anything to do with club size or history as for example it would sound stupid if I said Carlisle should be beating the likes of Burton, even though they are two leagues higher than us right now.

I can remember when Doncaster rovers were mentioned in the same breath as "the likes of" Darlington and other ex league teams always ending up close to relegation from the football league division 4 ...
You ain't shit ...Halifax barrow,Workington etc would all love to be in your shoes ....enjoy the ride, you've been brilliant when I've seen you play

hahaha someone miss reads a post and starts abusing a football club on a football forum shocker.

Stop hawking back to the past it's embarrassing, drawing us in the same breath as fucking Workington. This has been a miserable 4 years for us, our club deserved a bit of happiness.

Also this thread is shit and Luton have been a small club since the 70s

I mean why on earth you use Carlisle and Luton in your opening post above ourselves and Notts County I'll never know, but who cares really?

I noticed that too that he deliberately left Doncaster out even though you're top and one of the biggest clubs in this league who were just a Championship club 2 seasons ago.
He must not like your club for some reason...

Yeah, perhaps it's jealousy, it's really odd but at the end of the day he can choose what he likes I supposed.

As you can see by his last post he cannot defend himself.

Because he using history as the basis for the argument of who should beat and lose too, rightly or wrongly

Unfortunately for clubs like Luton, pompey, us and others this century has been unkind but many fans still live in the past and think where they have been for the last 10 years is not a reflection on where they should be.

Sorry, Grimsby aren't in the same league when it comes to footballing pain. Grimsby's FL status was prolonged because of "League 2A."

But thats besides the point, Grimsby spent a total of 2 seasons in lge 2 between 1979 and 2005 but since then have been here or non league, just like Luton who have spent almost 10 years at this level or non league now.

Doesn't mean I think we should be beating the likes of Doncaster or Stevenage or anyone else.

I'd think it's just a saying usually reserved for the teams at the bottom of the league in that particular season. If you're aiming for a promotion/play-off place then really you DO need to be winning the games against the likes of [this season] Cheltenham, Newport, Orient etc. Similarly, if you're down there you'll be saying it also as when you have the games against teams up the top they're almost free hits where anything's a bonus.

Don't see anything wrong with it really, unless it's just being used in an egotistical way by supporters of traditionally bigger clubs.

All except Lincoln it would seem, i think it is now 10 in a row Lincoln have beaten Braintree.

Altrincham were our bogey team down there we had played them 5 times and never beaten them until we played them at home last season and hammered them 5-0.

My favourite team to play against was Woking, the amount of injury time goals we scored against them they must really fucking hate us, including scoring 2 injury time equalisers in the same game which is the only point they have ever gained against us. (Played 9 won 8 drew 1)

It does come down to an arrogance thing usually, i've seen the likes of Wolves and Forest fans throwing a paddy because they didn't beat us, even though we're much better than the pair of them. Obviously you expect to win home games against relegation threatened sides but I bet Burton have opposition fans saying they should be beating them every week, even though they've only lost a very respectable 17 games out of 38.

11 in a row now, which is quite remarkable. We lost our first against them at their place on TV then drew 3-3 in the reverse fixture. Since that, 11 wins 31 goals scored. We've scored 3 against them 8 times in 13 games!

Woking were our bogey side prior to this season (3 draws, 5 losses), as were Welling before relegation (1 draw, 5 losses).

As former Second Division stalwarts and Johnstones Paint Trophy winners recently we shouldn't even be down at this level, never mind actually losing games.

To be fair your team have
always been considered as one of the "likes of"that should be beaten when considering results/predictas
Yet we generally under estimate you

I would say that Crewe are renowned for playing pure football, so would you describe yourself as a fan of Football at its Purist?

Of course. We Alex fans are connoiseurs of the game in its most fluid and creative form.
The big hoof has no place at Gresty Road...that kind of fayre is better suited to the Shitannia.
