Make your suggestions. Best mentions will get shortlisted and after a bit of debate will be put to a poll.

Carel can't access the forum at this moment but he told me to pass on his personal nomination.

Stephen Fry.

Benito is having similar issues and asked for his nomination to be put into the mixer. Annoyingly he's only given the initials, AH. Who could that be?

Ash Sarkar, Paul Mason, Matt Zarb- Cousin, Aaron Bastani.
Professor Alice Roberts, the bloke from Coast, Kevin from Eggheads, the lady who does Only Connect. Jelena Ramirez, Big John, Noel Edmonds.
These would all be good choices imho.

To be an intellectual, it seems that you have to have an opinion on most things and a high opinion of yourself - that would tend to put me off nominating or voting for most contenders alive today.

My favourite successor to Dave Allen would probably have been Father Jack but he's passed on, which leaves.............?

I guess for me it's a toss up between the late Vaclav Havel and the late Simone de Beavoir, for an intellectual that had things to say relevant to today's people. Since no one else is likely to nominate a woman (am I being presumptuous?), I'll go with Simone.

Great minds (and intellects) think along similar lines and in this case at the same time.

I'd consider voting for Victoria, poker playing daughter of Alan Coren, but look who she chose to marry.

He’s a fool. We’ll always be thankful for Peep Show but he can probably fuck off now and forever. Her brother is also a dodgy moron.

1) Phil McNulty.

2) Chomsky (good shout Red)

3) Albert Camus. He may be dead but his well thought out existentialist writing lives on.

In the UK? I'm not that sure we have any (that I would endorse). There are obviously very many smart people doing Good Things. But "public intellectual" seems to imply that the public at large take some sort of notice of your work. That you have some sort of profile beyond the subset of people that buy Repeater Books or listen to In Our Time or whatever. Which probably rules of Terry Eagleton or Kate Soper for eg.

Which leaves a cast of the dispiriting (Alain De Botton, Stephen Fry, Brian Cox, Richard Attenborough), and the appalling (Dawkins, Jencks) and the risible (Charles Windsor, centre left columnist du jour), and so on...

So, likeee...

Will Self? Simon Schama? Grayson Perry? Germaine Greer? Simon Hedges? Lede Astray?

John Berger died. Eric Hobsbawm died. Edward Said died. Neither of latter two were perfect (Berger was). Stuart Hall and Christopher Hitchens went off the deep end in the 90s, and both are dead also. Jacqueline Rose is on the telly from time-to-time. Tariq Ali?

We int really got a Gramsci, or anything, but, if you buy the information age periodisation, then I suppose you might infer that's because that role can't exist in the same way anymore.

Some great mentions there J, Stuart Hall was a fucking paedo long before the 90s though Serious though what happened to Stuart Hall in the late 90s? I liked his work which formed a small part of my dissertation.
