Even though he's getting on a bit, I'd still like Dale to sign Ellison - a classic "pantomime villain", and a pretty decent player over the years.

Billy Whitehurst was a genuine nutcase and hardman.
Some players have a reputation on the pitch, some it’s just bravado and all mouth (like a Vinny Jones type).

But much of Whitehurst reputation was OFF the pitch.
He used to thrive on (almost enjoy) violence and intimidation, he was a bit of a thug really, a nasty piece of work.
When he arrived at clubs he would even intimidate his own team mates letting them know he’s not to be messed with.

I can understand why you would say that, but he wasn’t that fiery character here. McCall and Jones most certainly were.

Some of our hardest players of that era didn't actually have a reputation like Wise, Fashanu, Jones or Ben Thatcher but went quietly about their business and you wouldn't mess with them. Even Lawrie Sanchez put 'hardman' Graham Roberts of Spurs onto a stretcher at White Hart Lane. Mick Harford would probably have taken all of them, mind.

Watching Fashanu get sent off at ours in 93ish was funny as fuck cos he was on a stretcher after being knocked out by Viv Anderson after he tried to sucker punch him.

I remember us playing Watford (maybe wrong team) and one of their players ended up pushing Kiely over the side of the stand. Kiely jumped back up and thumped the player back he didn't even get booked I don't think.

I can believe all of that with Billy Whitehurst. I just hope the bare knuckle fighting took place after his recovery from a long term back injury suffered, after 20 mins, on his debut for us at Liverpool when he was tearing their defence apart. He was rubbish when he returned unfortunately.

Johnny Lager was fantastic value on the pitch. Can't remember the opposition but I remember him checking if the officials weren't looking and then punched a opponent twice he'd been having a running battle with in front of the London Road. He shrugged his shoulders as he walked off when the Ref enquired why the opponent was on the ground.

Another story I've seen on our forum, so how accurate I don't know, is he persuaded a 1st year pro to lodge at his as he needed a chauffeur to get to the pub due to losing his driving license.

Unfortunately he failed with Dave Kitson then as the waster ended up with us. Conveniently got sent off just before Christmas so had it off. Then his stirring and trying to interfere in negotiations between the club and our young lads at the time such as Callum O'Dowda and James Roberts as he didn't like Michael Appleton. Fortunately, the players and their families told him to do one.

I remember when he and Micky Flanagan got sent off for fighting... and they were on the same team.
I know someone who was playing for Charlton that night and apparently Hales was waiting in the changing room for Flannagan with a pair of scissors!!

Hales was one that immediately sprang to mind but left him out as was before my time and I never saw him play.

Obviously knew about the Flanagan incident against Maidstone but even other clips I’ve seen of him he just looks fierce.
I didn’t know about the scissors I must admit.

Biggest aggro player I ever saw play for PNE was Alex "Black Prince of Deepdale" Dawson. A gifted ex Man Utd centre forward with an exceptional eye for goal and the other one for mixing it with opposing defending and goalkeepers. A high quality striker with an edge.

I remember one game played at Scunny in dense fog (not able to see past the half way line) and Dawson was really mixing it as he was giving our goalie Ken Jones a very hard time with challenges (when forwards actually challenged goalies), verbals and general abuse and threats. Ken Jones was quality too, best keeper we have ever had with Welsh International and Ballon D'or (European Footballer of the Year) credentials. Jones was known for combatting all forwards who dare challenge him, in particular those who came within "his" 6-yard box. I remember Jones making a save and getting up with the ball, with Dawson running up and standing just in front of him. Jones held the ball and waited until the referee had turned his back to run away and run upfield. Then Jones thrusted the ball forward with power and pace into the face of Dawson and then pulled the ball back. Dawson hit the deck and the ref returned having seeing nothing and Dawson was led off the pitch. He later returned taped and bandaged up with a broken nose to play out wide as a winger. Nothing like that would happen these days and that is why I mention it.
