i thought i'd set up a thread where we could post our thoughts based on the pretense
that we were actually "the gaffer" making the team selection....
whether or not it would be wise to make team changes for cup games or concentrate on the league?
does changing a previous winning team, after a loss or two, help or hinder your chances of promotion or relegation? at what point do you chop and change?
if you were mid table would a good cup run be more realistic so playing a full strength team would be beneficial at that time?
squad rotation....would you ??? seems to be the biggest contention amongst those that think they are football savvy..
who knows best??

Start Dan Jones and Jono Forte, but as a Notts fan you really can't complain. Nolan seems to be absolutely nailing it. He picks teams and I look at them and go. No chance. Shows you the difference between being a manager and a fan as a we keep grinding out results.

Its not that he hasn't got it wrong. Crewe away springs to mind. But its more than forgivable considering I thought the club was targeting a mid table finish and we are well above expectations

Re rotation. Nolan has us playing a "system" and as long as the majority of the players are consistent, he seems to be fairly easy to rotate. Personally I think changes are good as long as you don't go full Moniz and change the entire winning starting 11

If I was the gaffer I would make sure we always get more players close to Doidge, don't want him isolated up front, and would also get the team to shoot on sight a lot more.

I would also get the team to actually move about and make themselves available from throw ins, (we've been pretty crap at those for years) and would ditch the bus queue routine on corners.

Always want a cup run, wherever we are in the league. Can't stand teams playing weakened teams/concentrating on the league. The whole point of football is to try and win as many cups as you can.

I don't mind rotation, have about 20 players all capable of starting games and get them all used to the system so it doesn't make much difference who starts. Can chop and change every week then and keep players fresh.

Squad rotation for cup games is actually a pretty tricky question. We're often told there are far too many games in the English leagues, so rotation is a necessity, and yet continental clubs also rotate their squad for their cup games. Now bear in mind that most of these clubs do not play as many matches as the British sides and some do not even have midweek games (or once or twice at the most). This means that any regulars they drop for a cup game will have 14 days of rest between matches.

Personally, I prefer the manager to play his best side for all the FA Cup games, irrespective of the quality of the opposition. I fully believe that a large number of managers underestimate the underdogs and play a weakened side only to then have to play a replay (if they're lucky) which could've been avoided in the first place. The league cup's another thing though, and since the first round's in August, it's a given that managers will chop and change mostly because they want to look at all the squad players. What I don't accept though is playing only a couple of first teamers with the rest of the starting eleven comprised entirely of kids/reserves like we did this year at Bristol Rovers, as to me that only meant that Derry wanted out of League Cup at the first available opportunity.

Only doubt I have on this squad rotation thing is that if you don't play your reserves in the cup games, then when will you? A player may not stand out during training sessions but may shine during proper games.

Give Samir Nabi more game time, he's an unknown quantity and we've become too predictable. We can't do squad rotation though, we don't have a squad to rotate. I would have made more of an effort to sign Grant Holt too, he clearly wants to play for us and we've seen with Clint Hill what an improvement a veteran can make.

I'd stop fannying around with the team making around 4 changes a game.

I'd ensure that Byrom and Mellis start in midfield together, I'd sack Hemmings off upfront and start with Angol.

I'd get rid of Butcher, or send him on loan as he's been shocking since he came here.

I'd tell Logan to start coming off the line for crosses.

I'd stop talking shite and start winning games

Head says to rest key players in the FA Cup, don't want to lose someone who we rely on whilst playing a game that might ultimately count for nothing, especially given our predicament in the League. My heart says we should put out the best team available, recent performances have been encouraging and an extra game of players building on their understanding should be a good thing. Hopefully we can make it as far as the third round and draw Spurs away from home...think we might be able to find our way to their current home ground, I quite fancy making it three games there in consecutive seasons!

Get my agent to pull his finger out and get me a few more gigs on Sky Sport and BT Sport, as well as upping his bot's activity on GillsConnect. and @TheGillsFC.

Put the finishing touches to my revised generic 3 Year Plan, before tweaking the Gills, Sunderland and (shudderrrr!!) Bury versions.

Have a word with Joe to find out who we're putting out for this cup match on Sunday - a draw would be a great opportunity to raise the profile.

Give Grant Macca a bell to see what his thoughts are on tactics for our interviews prior to the big derby on Tuesday.

Dinosaur. The other night we apparently played 3-4-2-1 with 2 no 10's, a false 9 and lots of rotation of positions. We passed it out from the back, inc goal kicks with the ball on the floor virtually the whole time. Proper sophisticated stuff.

We did lose though.

Keith Curle would like to weigh in with his opinions on keyboard warriors.
"The messageboards and social media would have been absolutely full of other people's opinions over the team selection, but it's not their job, and it is mine. If they get it wrong, they can delete the page, delete the text or the post, and move on to base their opinion on something else. Like Brexit. Or the FA."

Interesting.....do I bring back Collins for the next game against Carlisle and hope his thirst for goals will reignite a somewhat disappointing level of performances recently....
But......why would I change a team after that last spectacle???
Would prefer Mullins to play in defence if cuthbert rested.....mpansy on the bench....
