So this game looked fantastic in the initial trailers, but in this last week before its released it was found that the reward system was totally ridiculous.
Those who haven't been following, this is my brief rundown:
After paying ~£50 for a brand new game, EA have included numerous microtransactions. These are often used for cosmetic items in Overwatch and Team Fortress 2 etc. The idea here seems to be you buy an in-game currency which you can unlock characters and weapons upgrades rather than gain them through playing the game.
This is already a bit of an affront to the consumer, and the effect of this is it basically becomes Pay to Win. Pay to Win exists usually in free mobile games, along side advertisements for the producers of the game to make money. So even after paying a premium price for this, they are still using the tricks of free mobile games to squeeze out a bit of extra revenue.
Further to this, it became clear that to unlock a Hero purely through gameplay would require the player to spend upwards of 40 hours playing the game. And on top of that, it limits the amount of credits you can earn through offline gameplay.
They have backed down on a few things, but it is extremely offputting and concerning for the future of games in general.
edit: just realised I typed conspiracy rather than controversy.
I guess the conspiracy comes this morning when they said they are removing all microtransactions for the time being. I'm sure they will be introduced soon after all their Christmas sales.
