That's true of most keepers at this level, one or two mistakes or start conceding a few and suddenly they can go from solid to a nervous wreak. Happens a lot with our keepers for some reason...

I remember Holy looked decent against us for Port Vale a couple of years back after he replaced that Brazilian liability they had in goal.

To be fair on this Crazy Cov was a liability not due to his keeping ability but the fact he couldn’t help himself getting sent off. The kung-fu kick on Harry McKirdy was just the final straw for DC and wasn’t seen again after that. Holy was generally not very good for us and was bombed out for Aidan Stone (an indictment in itself really). The bloke just never saved anything especially down low as due to his size it took forever to get down to the ball.

Reminds me of Luke Daniels this season (when he wasn't injured), was getting old and hadn't played much for years, dived to get down to low shots about as quickly as a railway barrier.

Talking of Covolan, not big on maverick goalies who spend half their time halfway up the pitch thinking they're sweepers, we've had a couple in the past and howlers/red cards are inevitable. No lower league keeper is good enough to be an outfield player. Stay in your box.

Must be aiming high if you think you’re better than madden?
Not better than, it's just circumstances. He's not really what we need. Blowing a big portion of our budget on what would be a luxury signing just doesn't seem right to me.

Fair enough point pal.

They’ll certainly be competition for his signature.

Ripley who we have now is very much a sweeper keeper, which is fine... unless Nathan Smith messes up a quick free kick just outside his own area!

Covolan never made any keeping errors but 3 red cards in half a season (1 in Pre Season, 1 on the opening day and then the kung fu kick on McKirdy) was just madness. Pretty sure he got sent off for Chesterfield on his debut on loan didn't he as well (ironically who he got sent off against in the pre season!)

That said he has done well this season in the FA Cup for Maidstone!

Maybe we should get Gillian Taylforth in goal as I hear she’s an expert on going down.*

*Allegedly.

Strongest rumours on our end seem to be...

Tomas Holy
Billy Sass-Davies
Cameron McJannett
Not heard any of them tbh but know we have spoken with Casey Pettit at Maidenhead. No idea what he is like but played most of the season, still young, previously at Luton

Sass-Davies? Bloke's looked a liability in the league below. Artell always rated him when with us yet no one else did.

Surprised Dave Richards and Regan Griffiths aren't on his list either.

He's always done well in the National League, including this season. There's things to like about him but he's never looked like an EFL player, unfortunately.

Pettit was a a deep lying playmaker type, sit deep and spray the ball around if i recall. Looked decent in pre season friendlies that I saw but always felt those sort of low intensity, lots of time on the ball type games suited his style. Wasn’t the most athletic I’d say, played a bit of centre half as well iirc. This was a few years ago though, not sure how he’s evolved since leaving us.

McJannet who you also mentioned is also an ex youth player of ours. Was a part of a team that went pretty deep in the Youth Cup and was then sold to Stoke I think, left side player who started at left back but has gradually moved over to LCB instead.

Thanks for that.
Pettit still only 21 so maybe developed in his year in the National League?

Time will tell if it goes any further.

I think Cam Mcjannet is a different one to the guy who was at Luton (Ed) ?
A left sided centre back will probably be on our list of ‘wants’ though

I can see him ending up at Oldham, replacement for James Norwood who the noise is might leave as that just hasn't worked at all.

Holy is no where near one of the worst keepers to play at this level.

We had both the McJannets! The other one we sold in a weird move to a team in Italy where I think he still is. He’s a forward/winger.

Pettit seems to have had a good season at Maidenhead. I liked him, also came across as a bit of a leader which is unusual for a young player in and around what was a successful side. He does coaching on the side of playing too, think he could do well.

Stockport County.
Grimsby are going to struggle again next season aren't they?

Artell will sign a load of players who are pretty "decent on the ball" and players he knows and it's going to be a shit show of piss weakness.

Stockwood will double down on Artell because he's his man but will end up having to do the right thing sooner rather than later. Hopefully at the right time because they can't go down again.

They stayed up at the end because Artell completely went away from his principles which was the right thing to do but pointless in the long term.

Grimsby can do so much better than Artell.

Should have added the caveat that those three I listed are from the rumours thread on The Fishy which almost certainly means it's bollocks.

Sounds like the bulk of our transfer targets will be identified by the data consultants we have partnered with and by our head of recruitment, with Artell having final say. I'm sure Artell will have some of his own targets too. We had a better window in Jan than most clubs in the division going down this route so hopefully that happens again in the summer.

Is Drummond from Macclesfield a done thing?

Because if it is, and we’re looking at Madden, then surely spells the end for Quig
Yep I believe it is.

Horton, Palmer, Quigs all would be getting moved on I think if any takers

Going For It™.
I think it’s open for anyone that wants it. One look at the odds already suggest no stand out fav. Will be MK or Donny if they don’t go up you’d think

Although I wouldn't mind it if they did go, it would strike me as dodgy asset management, with 2 of those 3 given new terms this season.

Think the former two had clauses in their contracts based on either appearances or promotion that automatically triggered extensions, but I agree, in hindsight we should have been smarter.

We will definitely be looking at experience - Kyle Macfazden is another name doing the rounds.

I heard Mcfadzean months ago. Lives local and very good friends with Naylor apparently

That may be true of Palmer, I've heard that a few places, but Horton was given a new contract along with Quigley around January time. Another year til Summer 2025. It could be that all 3 of those are here unless someone wants them. To go from a voluntary new deal to looking to shift them on in 4 months is a bit ouch.
The release list could end up making a very short read indeed. You have to hope the budget is going up considerably to afford all these names I've heard banded about in that case.

The released list is very small - Clements & Curtis I think. Banks also triggered a new deal - but it was a 1 year option and he wants 2 so hasn't signed yet. King I don't know about
