With some sides hitting the 36-game mark, I think it’s about time that the discussion about the division’s most important piece of silverware begins. Due to the league being utterly fucking awful this year, there are fewer runners and riders than usual as the playoff bar is, IMHO, going to be set extremely low. On the flip side, with five or six sides incapable of scoring a goal - let alone winning a game - the survival portion of the MTC should be attained very shortly for some.

As it stands, I make Stevenage favourites for the title. 13 points from both the drop zone and the playoffs, Alex Revell has done exceptionally well to turn last year’s relegation fodder into the epitome of mediocrity. With a strong emphasis on defensive organisation, posing little attacking threat and having very few games left, Hertfordshire’s little club that couldn’t might be about to obtain the first meaningful silverware of their hitherto pointless existence.

With a squad seemingly running on empty, Bradford Chickens are my second favourites. Though the playoffs are still being mentioned, I fear that their zenith has been reached for this season. They should bobble along at around 1.3 ppg to the end of the season which will be enough to see them safe in no time and well out of the playoff picture if anyone above them goes on a decent run.

The other two teams with the strongest shouts are Harrogate and (no calls of bias in the back, thanks) everyone’s favourite London-based Cinderella club. The Mid-Table Cup Ball is one Orient could well find themselves attending if they can scrape a result over the next few weeks; if not, getting mathematically safe from the drop any time soon might prove tricky. Harrogate have surely shot their bolt in terms of a playoff push, but they have a soft-looking set of fixtures to come. Mid-table mediocrity will be a breeze.

Of the outsiders, Mansfield and Scunny both look surefire bets to stay up comfortably, but their current relative proximity to the drop zone and patchy form leaves them hard to predict. A left-field choice may be illegitimate National League “champions”, Barrow, who have plenty of games in hand to pull away from the relegation slots whilst simultaneously having less chance of making the playoffs than Devon Lad has of making it a week without knocking one out over Anne Widdicombe.

How do you win? Do you need to be exactly the same amount of points between the playoffs and relegation, or do you need to come 12th.

Too late for us to make a run this year, but will happily take anywhere between 20th and 22nd.

I'm surprised Carlisle haven't requested to join like they did the relegation thread a couple of weeks ago.

First team who can’t mathematically go up or down I think.

It's the first team to be mathematically safe, but also mathematically unable to qualify for the playoffs

I'm surprised we're not on the list given we're only one place above his second favourites Bradford and still below his other front runners Harrogate.

The winners are the first team who are mathematically guaranteed L2 football next year, i.e. they can neither make the playoffs or be relegated.

Usually its a team in lower mid table that win it, as the safety bar often rapidly advances down the table while the most rank of outsiders can still mathematically make the playoffs.

So who won it last season? Or was it just null and void.

in the thread it said Grimsby were the holders, surely they never win anything.

Think it must have been null and void last season. If nobody had won it by the time the season was suspended then essentially everyone in mid table became both safe and staying down in one fell swoop.

You have five games in hand on some sides. The Cup might be won before you’ve even hit the 40-game mark.

Hope it's Crawley, just to hear Yems' acceptance speech as he receives the trophy in front of a full Wembley crowd, televised to millions.

I think Orient are a more likely call though.

Who requested us to join the relegation thread?

I know I’m known as somewhat of an optimistic Carlisle fan, but surely even the doom mongers of our fans don’t think there’s a chance of us being relegated.

You really need to see us before you write us off as relegation contenders. Think about a team with no morale, no energy and no sharpness, then think of a team ten times worse than that and you have us.

I was quietly confident of winning this for this season but then Crawley have gone on a run of four wins from five (or similar). Now I reckon Orient will get it.

As always. Its the hope that gets you!

Congratulations to Cheltenham and Cambridge, who have both completed the first leg of the Mid-Table Cup qualifiers by officially avoiding relegation. Might’ve gone a bit early there though, lads.

by the end of Tuesday the top 7 clubs together with Grimsby and Southend could be half way there having avoided relegation or the play offs....

Typical bleedin’ Leyton Orient. In (near enough) pole position for something and then throw all that hard work away with three wins on the bounce. Port Vale have cruised quietly into contention, whilst Harrogate are making an already-strong case stronger.

These clubs have idiotically ruled themselves out of contention:

Safe - Cambridge, Cheltenham, Tranmere, Horwich Pigfeets, FGV, Morecambe(!)

Out of Playoff Contention - n/a

We are now 11 points clear of the drop zone and 11 points adrift of the play-offs.

Our title to lose.

Might win this now! Oddly we are now closer to the play offs (10 points) than we are relegation (12) which seemed unlikely about 18 days ago!

I think you’ve played too few games. It’s usually games played which pulls teams out of play off contention but points which keep them away from relegation. It looks to be between Port Vale, Oldham and Mansfield to me. Maybe Stevenage if they start losing.

If we win this we will have gone about it in a very strange way, Has anyone else had a run of 5 wins in the same season as they suffered 5 defeats on the trot as we did in November?

Or more oddly ended a run of 3 straight wins with a run of 3 wins in 25 before a run of 5 straight wins! Nuts! We’ve done just under 1/3 of our points total in the last 3 weeks.

19 points from 10 games.. 16 points from the next 25 games and 15 from the following 5.

Can see now why we are bi polar fans! 25 games pure bottom of the league form, 15 games top of the league form!

i think we are just definitionally a mid table club. thats why we got the stat of beating every one of the 91 clubs at least once.

we're good enough that we were in the league 100 years ago, beating the man utds, aston villas, liverpools etc, but shit enough that we're in league 2 playing all the promoted teams.
