2 and 4 are very 90s imo. Leave them in the dark ages.

Prefer 1 and 6 but I guess the traditionalists will go with 3.

Based on those terrific drawings, number 3 looks the best of the bunch. Maybe 5 after that. Not a fan of blue shorts with our home kits, just don't look right.

Design no 1 is a definite no-no from me, as I think any Carlisle home shirt should always be blue plus white plus red. U no wot I mean. That makes no 2 (going clockwise here) another no-no, and also no 4: the one with the sash as it looks too Palacey I think. No 5 just looks plain silly imo. That leaves no 6 and no 3, and I'd go with the latter - I like the relatively simple shirt design and the white shorts.

I'm also guessing the one that I like is the one with the collar?

Ps sorry Shoddy, it has got a collar indeed. You said so in your last paragraph.

Why you have to be awkward and go clockwise instead of left to right, top to bottom like a normal person?

I'm pretty sure they all had at least some white trim, just that on 2 and 4(!?) it's only the red I remember. I know I thought 2 was pretty nice and I would have had the same criticism as you had there been no white on it. I did like number 6 and thought number 5 was crap.

You get some fans who think red has no place on our kits, I can't remember which of the United fans on here holds that view, but one does; as does the guy who created a thread on our forum about it. Depends on era I suppose, some old-timers still see it as new-fangled and messing with tradition. It didn't appear till '73 when it was very prominent and we had red socks too. It remained that way until '80 when it was relegated to just being on the trim and then disappeared altogether in '87, reappearing in '92, since when we've been about 50:50 between it being a prominent part of the design, or just a little trim.

I prefer the prominent ones as I believe it marks us out from the crowd, and my first replica kit had a lot of red on it, as did the ones we wore during our most recent period of success and the kit we wore in the first division back in the seventies.

At this early stage, I'm hoping they get talked out of it. I considered not putting the shorts with the drawings as I couldn't remember exactly which one had white shorts and expected that by the time the fans had their say it would be clear to them that they had to have white shorts.

EDIT: According to the guy who posted on our forum, it was the red sash one that had white shorts.

My memory (confirmed by http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Carlisle_United/Carlisle_United.htm) was that my main Barrow AFC Subbuteo team (proper 3D figures as opposed to the flat ones) had our Div 3 kit and also served for Chelsea and Carlisle United - so that sticks for me for all 3 teams. Although our promotion kit (more Bury white shirts/socks and blue shorts) became the iconic Barrow one.

Since you've gone down the red route since Div 1 days, I agree that the unique ones, with more red and white, differentiate you from the crowd and have most potential.

U's have already had a poll on next season's away shirts based on a bit of nostalgia.

....although these seem more appropriate at the moment (and I don't mean because it's nearly Xmas).

There's a nice retrospective in today's News and Star of the last time Carlisle asked the fans to vote on a new kit, back in 1995. Sit back and enjoy these marvels of mid-nineties football fashion. Some of them were absolute belters, and they had as many as twelve to choose from too (it was in the period we manufactured shirts under our own 'Red Fox' label).

9166657

A pretty strong start

9166658

Boring!

9166659

This 'understated' one actually won.

9166660

Seeing the introduction of yellow as a new trim colour

9166661

If you cross your eyes and squint at it you will see Mick Wadsworth's face staring back at you

9166662

Another one where three colours wasn't considered enough

9166663

This one is almost like something we would produce day, though considerably uglier

9166664

I mean, the mind boggles.

9166665

Some are festooned with foxes, some have deckchair stripes, some have a central panel. This has all three.

9166666

I believe the foxes encircle the kit so they are chasing each other. Anthony Gerrard would have required a third fox to be added.

9166667

It's a scan of an old paper, so based on the colour of the phone number those are red, not yellow stripes, like CUFC invented the black dress, blue dress thing.

9166668

Just to prove footballers aren't all dumb oafs, this one shows Gary Kasparov's winning move from the 1994 Chess Grand Masters.

The real shocker here is that we were only 15 votes away from wearing shirt number eight for two seasons. I just cannot fathom that.

Mid 90's football strips really were a thing of beauty! Not.

Growing up back then with no internet we had to make do with snail mail and penpals. One of my penpals was a Rochdale fan and he sent me one of their home shirts. Exactly like the one below but with a different sponsor, Carcraft. I believe it was worn during 94/95 and 96. As we all know, strips were good for 2 years back then (and sometimes even as much as 3 years), and the home strip was worn for all games unless the colours clashed of course.

So obviously, I then sent him a U's shirt, though dear pa wasn't best pleased he had to shell out again for another footy shirt. A slightly better effort if I may say so.

Some of those Carlisle possible kits looked more like pjamas for a young kid than football shirts.

Didn’t realise Stone Roses were from Grimsby, get your own band!

Is it to be worn by the first team or just a release of the retro shirts like Errea did for us the last few seasons for the fans?

Just a special release. Wouldn’t be against having a retro kit for a season though!

Cool Errea did a few for us before going to BLK start of the season. First three or four were ace.

We're going back to Errea next season. Happy memories of the kits they did for us back in the day, let's see if they can match their earlier efforts. Still think no kit manufacturer has come close to Le Coq Sportif for the kits they made for us.

Errea did us decent kits, gutted we moved although love the BLK kits this season they are poor with supplying and our players wore last seasons kit.
