Offside is offside etc etc, but for the purposes of VAR they need to forget about these fractional ones. In the past, they'd have drawn the lines up on the screen and gone "ooh, that's tight" and then probably disagreed amongst themselves whether they thought he was level or not. They need to let those go and just focus on the ones that are clearly off.

You can't decide to just not use it for offsides (as they suggested on MOTD), because if the linesman misses one that's a yard or two off then it would be ridiculous to not consult the video. But they're the ones that the system ought to be used for in the first place.

It's crazy how they've made such a mess of implementing this.

Other than the fallibility of the technology I don't see the issue with giving tight offsides as offside. Eventually I suspect the technology will be such that all players will be tracked to the millimetre and these decisions can be made very quickly, too.

Any changes will come in next season as they won't want to do it mid season.

They said on MOTD last night that 21 goals had ruled out through VAR.

I wonder how many punters have been ruing those decisions, especially on the over goals markets.

Mainly because frame rates mean there's always going to be a margin of error. Cricket gets around that with umpires call. It would make sense to do same here. If you have to watch it back hundreds of times, draw lines and dots and whatnot... it's not clear and obvious so on-field decision should stand. VAR was never meant to take over from officials, it was meant to help them. Seems to be working that way in other countries, not sure why we've decided to do it differently.

I'd like to see VAR only used in an American style challenge system. Each team gets 1 per half and the manager/coach chucks a half time orange on the pitch if he thinks VAR should be looking at a possible penalty/offside/maiming incident.

and while we're at it bring back proper fucking tackling rules. You can tackle from the side and behind without endangering an opponent.

You obviously dont go or haven't ever gone to watch live football then. The game is dead.

This exactly, although I think even one challenge for the entire game is fine. If you win your challenge you keep it, you don't you lose it.

Another excellent win with 10 men!

Certainly has been a great Christmas period.

2 good goals and some very decent defending when under pressure.

Klopp been complaining about VAR as well so that might put pressure on the officials.

In fairness to the officials they rarely play a part now. I mean the ref at city should have blown for a drop ball with common sense and no one would have argued. It's the var what's a disaster. That villa one yesterday was incredible and I'm sure noble tripped himself over yet still got the pen. Every club wanted var but now I'd say every one would overturn that decision.

To be honest I laughed when you appointed Pearson but he's really sorted you out and fair play. Think yesterday was a game too many for us, the core squad must be absolutely knackered (used the least amount of players in the league and played 12 extra games so far). Feel for Cutrone he really needs some minutes. Hopefully will get a couple more reinforcements this month.

Every club wanted var but now I'd say every one would overturn that decision.

Clubs were (and still would be) right to want VAR. VAR isn't the problem, it's the clowns operating it. Riley/PGMOL have integrated it their own way rather than following the guidelines almost everyone else are using. It's either arrogance (your typical "the English know best" bollocks) or sabotage (they don't want it so have integrated it in worst way possible to turn people against it). Either way, they are the problem. I hope clubs see that.

VAR is a step in the right direction, just not how they're doing it. It's supposed to assist officials, not replace them. It really should be so simple:
- officials make decision on field
- if unsure of decision or the official watching replays tell them to go check, they go check
- the referee watches on pitch-side monitor and if clear/obvious error, overturn decision. otherwise uphold decision - if you have to watch a hundred replays/draw lines and dots, it's not a clear/obvious error.

Offside has become a joke. The changing of laws to being offside if any body part (excluding hands/arms) is ahead of defender probably made sense when only the naked eye was being used to judge - even if only just to give officials some protection in their calls. With use of technology, it's ridiculous to stick with that iteration. Offside isn't about penalising players for having a hair out of place.

That makes for painful reading, but it just shows the point: we can compete, but we haven't got the quality to do so for the full 90 minutes.

At least Buendia is up for Player of the Month, I suppose, but all that means is that he'll be off to bigger things that much sooner.

A monkey on a unicycle could score against our defence: just leave it unmarked from a corner for a free header.

We will not keep another clean sheet all season, I say that with absolute certainty.

It's not looking good for you unfortunately. I'm pretty confident were gonna stay up now anyway. Hope villa go down with the ridiculous amount they spent.
