As we near the halfway mark, time to check out the runners and riders to visit the basement in '25-'26.

These are the runners and riders as things stand.

I've included all the way up to lower mid-table, and you could argue that even sides that are higher-placed than Stevenage could be dragged into it, but it would either take the mother of all chokes, or off-the-field problems for that to happen (even Reading, the most likely side to get yet another points deduction for being a basket case, would only go to 24 points if deducted the usual 10).

If I had to guess, I would say that although mathematically, anything can happen, realistically it's between the bottom 6.

Stevenage looked to me a solid, workmanlike side, who'd put together a fair run of form before today.
Fergie will surely be sacked if this abysmal run of form continues, and they'll throw money at the problem in Jan.
Evans will also be backed in January.

So, that leaves...

in 19th - the Gas. Absolutely dogshite start to the season, and underperforming chronically. I feel like this can probably be put squarely on Matt Taylor, never a popular manager from what I could tell.

Calderon is a bit of a gamble as a manager, as managing the kids is very very different from managing a full senior side. But, he does have experience of the lower leagues, and as a defender should at least prioritise some solidity at the back.

In 20th, Northampton. Too early to say how the new manager will turn out, but he strikes me as the type who will be a good motivator, and take no shit from anyone, certainly decent qualities for a team battling the drop.

Last season they managed to be a solid side, never going to pull up trees, but good enough for this level, and that's the form they need to rediscover, and quickly.

In 21st, Crawley. With this lot, you kind of get the impression that it'll be when, not if, they go down, the problem being that as soon as they find some decent players then they'll get sold. That's never the way to consolidate at a level where you stand a high chance of struggling. Other than today's thumping, they rarely seem to lose badly, and seem to raise their game against the stronger sides - but that's not who you need to worry about as a side at the bottom, it's beating the sides around you.

In 22nd, Cambridge. They are getting the odd result here and there, but they are badly lacking in consistency, Monk does not seem to have been a great appointment overall as manager. They're far from down and out, but need to at least draw more consistently to stand a chance of getting out of trouble.

Your 23rd placed contenders: Shrewsbury Town. Gareth Ainsworth's tenure here started with a bang, beating table-toppers Brum. But since then, results have been at best mixed, and worst of all, losing key relegation six-pointers to the likes of Burton and Cambridge.

Ainsworth certainly has the motivational skills to coax results out of average players, but if the quality isn't there, he's likely to struggle.

And holding up the table, Burton Albion. Since Dino Maamria, a flurry of ill-advised managerial options - arguably always going for the cheap option - has seen them get into real trouble, and you feel it would take a miracle to keep them up at this stage.

As much as I'd love Ainsworth to pull Shrewsbury out of the shit, I'm not sure their squad is good enough to do that, or that he'll be backed enough in January to bring the required quality in.

Like I say, I think it's 4 out of the current bottom 6, and a lot depends on how wise the new managerial appointments for Bristol Rovers and Northampton turn out to be - arguably neither is a guaranteed safe pair of hands.

I think 1 or 2 will join and a couple will probably leave, like usual. Look at how in 3/4 games Orient pulled themselves right out of it, it’s quite a tight division this season

You need to include us as Gassy thinks we are a relegation side

Issue with Nolan coming in is the injury list is still absolutely massive so there’s no scope to change anything. We’ve still got the same back 4 devoid of any confidence and no options going forwards. Need to make use of January and free up some space by packing some long term absentees back to their parent clubs.

Now whilst im certainly not saying you will be relegated you could easily be dragged into this, your form has been crap, like a number of other sides to, from a side who are in the relegation zone it’s teams like yourselves who we’re looking at to be dragged into the battle.

The bookies seem to have the same 6 down as those to look at, though there is a chance there’s someone else who goes in a clusterfuck of a run - there’s a chance a top half side could still be dragged into it.

I think Northampton will get out of it if they get some of the injuries back.

I would find it particularly amusing if Rotherham stuck with Evans and he took them down.

Careful now, Exeter once had a shot about 40 yards away that went about 40 yards over the bar. That shot alone was proof they’re battering every team in this league and will be going up this season.

Stop crying because you don't have Ryan Woods anymore

The worst 4 teams we’ve played are Burton, Cambridge, Rovers and Northampton. Crawley don’t have a great squad but seem to do ok with what they have but it may still be too much for them to stay up, so I’d probably back them to go down over Rovers.

Stockport County.
Four worst teams we've played are Burton, Cambridge, Reading and Bolton. Shows it can be quite random.

Fear Ainsworth has been left with too much to do, unless he can make wholesale changes early enough in January. Blackmail looks an astute signing, if only for coming out for crosses. We've shown glimpses of the fighting spirit, but most of the players aren't good enough or fit enough to match Ainsworth's game plan for 90 minutes.

Saying that, the gap has reduced to safety from 10 points to 6 points over the last 2 games. Problem is I can't see too many points coming from January after the Northampton game on Sunday. Are January fixtures are:

Blackpool (a)
Orient (a)
Huddersfield (h)
Wrexham (h)
Charlton (a)
Stockport (a)

Quite concerningly, Cambridge are also one of the worst sides we've played as well.

Probably ought to stop doing that really....

Don't massively disagree with the opening statement about us, but it's probably more about taking the odd win rather than grinding out draws.

It's still hard to see exactly where we're at, a few losses ago it was first half of the season abysmal, last half actually not too bad, but we look more like the first half again and now Lavery is out for the next few months at least and it's hard to see where the form is going to come from. Monk didn't get sacked then and I doubt we will again soon either, even if it doesn't seem to be working.

Get through the next few matches, bring in some functioning bodies, bomb a few out, and stay in touch of safety and we might have a chance. Could easily be cut adrift by then also, so who knows. It's the hope etc etc...

Our game Sunday is pretty huge isn’t it. I’m not confident at all.

Burton were quite useful at ours, we drew 3-3 2nd game of the season - they scored 3 out of the 8 away goals they’ve scored away.

Likewise cambridge and shrewsbury were both beaten 2-1 and didn’t look poor, however we won 2-0 at northampton and they were don’t look upto much.

Bristol beat us 1-0 and looked quite tidy, though the loss was harsh on us.

Christ how bad must those 4 be if we didn't feature
We at least were fairly solid back then and I remember us starting well against Stockport. We at least looked a bit tough to break down but couldn’t score, if I remember correctly.

Somehow Taylor took that and got rid of the tough to breakdown bit, without really scoring anymore goals

Agree it’s no way indicative of who’s going down as can easily be an off day. That being said it was obvious just from one game that Burton will be down unless Bowyer pulls off a miracle.

Worst sides I’ve seen are Rovers, Crawley, Rotherham & Northampton (in that order).

Not played Cambridge yet and we threw in our worst performance of the season vs. Shrews. Burton put in a good defensive showing but had nothing going forward and they can’t 0-0 their way to safety.

The worst we've had at SB were Reading (even with 11 men), Charlton and Wigan.

I think people who went to the Posh and Rotherham away games were genuinely gobsmacked at how poor they were as well but I think that was probably off the back of how they were expecting to perform this season rather than thinking they'll be for the drop.
