What are we gonna do for 3 bastard months with no football?
I'm gonna have to do all the crap jobs around the house that I've been promising the Mrs I would do if you don't give me some ideas!
HELP!!!! :eyes:
Will be off backpacking through Europe in July.

Zola’s tenure and that last half hour at Ashton Gate has taken about 5 years off my life.

And can now look forward to the ‘Arry Redknapp era :bg: Let the good times roll...

TBH it's nice to give football a rest for 3
Months. I feel like we have been in a 9 month fight to stay up, so gonna enjoy, hopefully the summer and some good BBQs and good weather.
Plus a family holiday to menorca with kids mini discos, towels on the sun loungers at 6am, plus crap watered down beer as part
Of the all inclusive offering.

Anywhere specific? I've backpacked through the Baltic states a couple of years ago. It's nice around Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland way, not ruined by tourism yet either.

This summer I'm going to Cyprus for 2 weeks, and Grenada in January.

Where in Cyprus Mark? Spent 5 months out there last summer with work so feel like I literally have done that island to death.

Courteeners infront of 50k at Old Trafford cricket ground in May, Croatia for 3 weeks in June/July and a move back south are my highlights of this summer. Half season ticket is definitely on the cards after 2 years away.

I spent a week in/around Pathos a couple of years ago, lovely place. Although slightly odd the way it's made up of a Russian quarter, British quarter etc! Lots of history if you're interested in that, also lots to drink...have a few pints of Leon.

Been to Greece (Rhodes) twice but never Cyprus. Going to a place called Protaras to the east of the island. Beaches look great from what I've seen, have you been there before?

I was split between Pathos and Protaras actually, went with the latter as it was a little cheaper. Both look great though. Also my dad used to serve for a few years at the military base in Cyprus, could only say good things about the country.

Huh, my uncle used to serve in the military base out there, stayed over one summer as a kid with our cousins in their villa. Fantastic place

RAF Akrotiri is where I spent the 5 months.. not a bad little spot on the med.

markwwfc1992 Re: Protaras, Didn't go last year but I've been before with an ex, it's a nice little place. Like you say the beaches are spot on and you've got napa just around the corner if you fancy a good bit of night life. Away from the nightlife, Napa has some of the best beaches on the island too as well as some scenic spots that you might want to check out.

Paphos was decent, especially up the Marina end. If you end up that end for any reason just avoid the brit bar who's owner has changed his name to "Tony Montana". Absolute bellend.

I am going to start out in Gdansk in Poland. And then will work my down through Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, and end in Italy. Was looking at the Balkan region but the train network there seems to be non-existent, no trains connecting Croatia to Montenegro, Serbia, etc. How was it backpacking in the Baltics?

It was decent, best way to describe it is probably like Medieval Europe, if you could imagine that. It was cheap, but the food and beer was very good (I even tried bear meat in Estonia... surprisingly nice it was too) and the locals were great too. We didn't bother with trains, just got a plane to Kaunas in Lithuania, got a coach through to Riga, Talinn and then a boat to Helsinki, and flew back home from there.

I work in Poland.
If you get chance, call into torun before you go over the border to Germany. It's a hidden gem. Wonderful city.

I went to Helsinki twice in 2008 and ’09. My memory is a bit hazy now, I can just about remember walking through Esplanadi and going up those steps to the Lutheran Cathedral. Really nice during the summer. Regrettably should had taken the ferry to Tallinn while I was there.

It reminds me a lot of Gorlitz, on the German/Polish border. I love those old European towns that have been left frozen in time, untouched by modernization. It looks like it’s on the Gdansk/Berlin route, I will bear it in mind

I've been to Helsinki a couple of times for work, once in the winter and once in the summer. The area around the harbour is lovely, a really pleasant place. We always stayed in a hotel with a viewing tower at the top of it with views over the city. I found Helsinki to be extremely clean and friendly but it was obscenely expensive!
Here's the hotel, called Hotel Torni.

The architecture, especially around the awesome railway station is extremely eastern European, maybe a nod to the days when Finland was Russian ruled. I loved the place in the summer but found the lack of daylight (about 2 hours a day) really depressing in the winter.

Did either of you go to the stadium? Went to HJK Helsinki vs FC Lahti, but had to leave at half time to get the last ferry back to Estonia. 0-0 and half time but Helsinki won 3-0 in the end. Mikael Forssell scored twice in that game, Small Heath legend

I think the Uspenski Cathedral is Russian built as well, close to the harbour. Does Hotel Torni have one of those old elevators that you pull across with the door? I think I might have stayed there, the name is very familiar. Was at the Radisson the year after.

 No I didn't. Was with my ex girlfriend who hates football. Would have been good to see Forssell though.

No mate, I went to the ice hockey though as a corporate guest. It was at the gloriously names Espoo metro Areena.. It was some place to be fair.
