Aaron McCarey fails drugs test

Aaron McCarey has failed an out of competition Football Association (FA) drug test for a non-performance enhancing substance.

As a result, the Wolves goalkeeper is now subject to an immediate FA suspension from all competitive forms of football.

The immediate suspension is a standard procedure whilst the FA’s investigation is concluded.

Aaron McCarey strenuously denies deliberately taking any banned substance.

The Club is extremely disappointed and concerned that one of its players has failed a drugs test.

Neither the player nor the Club will be making any further comment whilst the FA investigation is underway and not until the matter has been fully concluded.

I think they probably have a weekend where they give everyone a "suprise" drug test. These guys have probably been taking these drugs all season.

To me it's odd that they did this at a time where it actually has least impact on the clubs concerned (i.e. they'll have served three months of, say, a six month ban by the time the new season starts). it's almost as though they wanted to protect any club affected to some degree. Maybe the FA drug testing squad knew that any player who might be tempted by a night out with their mates thought that with the season over, they would be pretty safe, hence this purge?

I've long held a theory that recreational drug bans are often served in secret. Anyone who saw the TV doc a few years ago where Garry O'Connor (Birmingham) claimed that he'd served a drug ban in secret while it was publicly stated that he had a long term injury would probably think there's some truth in that. The main point of that doc was that the FA & FL had no interest in publicising such cases as they would only do damage to the game. I guess this blows that out of the water somewhat!

I agree, it's weird they do this now.

Maybe they've done drug tests throughout the season too, but either nobody got caught or if anyone did they kept it quiet. Who knows?

Drug testing in football is a joke and one of the reason is to protect the the image of the sport. Other sports have done it before (cycling, baseball, american football etc.) and it isn't inconceivable that there are many others doing it (tennis and football being the obvious two).

How many bans are there for drugs a season? Virtually none. How many players are on PEDs or using recreational drugs? It's impossible to say but it's much higher than the none that get banned for it.

Glad when I read the report of 'Wolves goalkeeper fails drugs test' that it was only our 3rd choice keeper. If found guilty he'll all but blow his chance of making a professional career out of it. Like Saddler says he sounds like a bit of a arsehole from a few of our fans who know of him, so good riddance.

He played for us on loan last season, wasn't any better than Michael Ingham. He's certainly not done his career any good if he's guilty, I note that he's "strenuously denied" having "deliberately" taken anything illegal, so we'll see how it pans out.

I'll have some of that stuff that makes me fat, slow and lazy. Then I'll get a trial at Wolves.
