It looks like a plot has been uncovered involving Forever Bury (official fan club) and 1 Robert Benwell to steal a club from a higher non league and "franchise" it to Gill Lane.
Alferton Town appear to be in the frame, if so my sincere apologies, I would not wish our shit situation on ANY other club (even Noblot)
The Phoenix group have wind of this and it will NOT be allowed to happen.
I hope to hell this is false news but the sources say otherwise and FB and Benwell have called a public meeting on the 19TH, they can expect a shit storm and pitckforks are at the ready.

Possibly, but having read the Bury message board there is a potential threat to an un-named NL1 club (Alfreton seem to be a random choice on a probably alphabetical basis, so it could be anyone). So I think Keith (the OP) is probably wise to share it on the Non League forum so that potential victims have some warning...

Seems a bit pointless trying to steal a place in NL North really when you would expect a Bury Phoenix club to piss their first couple of seasons in the Mickey Mouse leagues and be at NL North level very quickly anyway.

There used to be two Ashford Town's (one in Kent, one in Middlesex), so I don't see why not. The caveat would be that they would be have to have their region in brackets at the end of the name to differentiate them; in this case, that would give you Bury Town (Suffolk) and Bury Town (Greater Manchester) or something to that effect.

I think there has been a rule change about that because the Kent Ashford had to change their name to Ashford United a few years back. It was something to do with what status they wanted, full out amateur (which is what they were when Town) or semi-professional which is what they are now.

The Kent Ashford Town went bust around a decade ago. Ashford United is a new club using the same ground.

I believe existing clubs have the right to object if they feel a new club, or a club wishing to rename itself, has chosen a name too similar to their own then it's down to the FA to adjudicate. I don't believe there are any hard and fast rules.

I understand that we (Hornchurch) have periodically looked at changing back to Hornchurch & Upminster (the pre-1960 name). It would make some sense as the ground is just into Upminster* and a lot of the support (no jokes please) comes from there rather than Hornchurch or the wider area.

But the FA won't allow this as there is already an Upminster FC which might imply a merger. So fair enough.

* NERD ALERT - The old boundary between Hornchurch and Upminster actually ran through the middle of the pitch along the route of the River Ingrebourne. But the river - and therefore the boundary - was diverted a bit to the west when the new council sports ground (aka Hornchurch Stadium) was created in the early 50's.

If there is a silver lining to all this for Bury fans surely it's the chance to start at the bottom and work your way up the leagues.. Wimbledon fans have fond memories of step 7 to 1, winning games and getting promoted. Doesn't matter what league it is, people love to see winning games.
Hereford fans had the same too and their crowds went up to 4,500.
Tsking someone else's identity is as low as it gets, but I'm sure it won't come to that anyway.
