What is wrong with saying 'non-whites'? I thought the Rooney rule included asians as well as black people?

Its just a very prehistoric phrase in my eyes, I personally think its almost an 'us v them' kind of term

He's just guilty of using dated terminology. Obviously using that term within the subject has given it greater emphasis, unfortunately for Brazil.

Why there's a thread for this and none for the proposed Rooney Rule is a little worrying.

I don't see the problem at all to be honest, it's not an offensive term and there isn't a standardised list of words you're allowed to use when referring to ethnic minorities. Perhaps there should be.

The article originally states that he was referring to black people as 'non-whites' and then they talk about ethnic minorities, which is it? black people? or all ethnic minorities?

Schools do have appropriate terminology for different ethnicities and most big corporations would expect you to adhere to them.

I can't imagine TalkSport, its presenters and its listener-base concern themselves with too many corporate guidelines.

I bet the people having a go on Twitter didn't even listen to the show. PC for the sake of being PC.

It's a broadcasting company, they'll be more stringent than most. They fired Jon Gaunt for calling a guy a Nazi.

That may well be true.

I just don't see the term 'non-white' as offensive, lazy maybe and certainly not on the same level as labelling someone a Nazi which is never a clever thing to do.

You cant say anything without offending someone these days. I'm against racism as much as anyone else but this country is becoming a joke for vilifying people who use dated terminology and branding them as racists.

PC brigade at it again. It's a load of rubbish, as is my opinion the Rooney Rule. If non whites (oh no look what I've said) are good enough, they will get the position.

I swear I read somewhere that the amount of black managers that actually have all their badges is actually quite low? So a lower pool of black managers instantly is going to mean a lack a good ones to choose from. I just see it as people looking for an issue where there isn't one.

There are two, well argued and enlightened, threads on this in Championship and L2.

Is that not an issue then?

I've reported your post for using the word 'vilifying'. It's just not acceptable to use words that might be perceived to be discriminatory towards Aston Villa fans.

Isn't the issue that black coaches arnt supposedly being given the opportunity? Now if they haven't got the qualifications they don't deserve the opportunity? White. Black, Orange, it's doesn't make a difference. Now is the issue that not enough black people want to gain these qualifications and get involved in football? Then the question becomes why?

You cant say anything without offending someone these days..

You can. And a lot of people manage it.

Alan Brazil is a bit stupid, so it's probably best not to have him discuss this sort of thing. But then again, it's TalkSport, so I think they like this sort of thing.

Because they don't think they'll get the opportunity to manage a club.

Can someone educate me on an acceptable alternative to the hideously 'prehistoric' [sic] term 'non-white' when you want, specifically, to refer to more than just black managers.

Reported. You can't call someone 'stupid' without specific knowledge of an acceptable and scientific measure of stupidity.

Right. So a potential Black manager thinks he won't bother getting the qualifications because he won't get appointed as a manager. But then will be the first to moan when he gets passed over in favour of a better qualified White candidate.

Hmm, I think I've spotted where the problem lies.

Reported. You can't refer to people as Orange just because they march behind drums and shout "Nevah! Evah! Evah! Evah!........"

Let me guess: Black people? The problem is black people.

Ethnic minority.
Sorry, but that's patently incorrect.
"An ethnic group or ethnicity is a socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural or national experience".
Scottish people are an ethnic group and in a minority. So are the Welsh, Danes, Portuguese, the Irish and Yorkshire people. Ethnicity is self-identified. None of them would be relevant to this.

Edit: And lest this be misconstrued, I'm in the minority who favour the Rooney Rule (of some sorts).

Ethnic minority is the exact term. A nationality isn't an ethnicity.

Nor is Yorkshire or a host of other categories. Read the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Ethnicity is self-defining according to social and cultural norms within that group.
