The Everton following is probably 3rd or 4th largest in the US. Arsenal and Man U are definitely the most followed teams here though.

The reason most followed Everton was because of Tim Howard. Not sure how many people still support them without Howard keeping.
Of course I forgot about the Tim Howard connection. Everton have had McBride and Landon Donovan as well so it may figure they have a big American following.

Landon Donovan, the one who is in epic's 1FF best ever strikers list? :D

Complete Failure in Germany at Leverkusen and Bayern and at Everton he made....let's look...17 matches on loan (2 Goals). Quite impressive figures that would really explain the great amount of US Supporters of the Toffees /s

Just support United. We brought Tim Howard over, gave Freddy Adu a trail and we're owned by Americans. The drams is second to none

Going from your description Spurs would actually make sense. They have been consistently in the top six, have a decent young team and are unlikely to get relegated.

Again, if I lived in England, or had an easy way to watch lower league matches, this wouldn't be an issue. I can support a team after relegation. The problem is that if I team gets relegated, then I pretty much have to go an entire year without seeing a minute of action.

Tottenham was one that I had thought about a while ago. Based off last year's standings, I thought about both West Ham and Tottenham. I guess I just don't know too much about Spurs.

You're asking an impossible question here. Any of the top clubs are too rich for the glory hunter angle, any of lower half clubs are all in danger of going down, the other clubs don't have any real shot at glory and you have no real affiliation to anywhere but London in geographical terms.

You may as well pick it on the basis of Palace having cool flags and singing Glad All Over, or Everton having a funky stand made of triangles.

I'm not kidding either, I have never been able to 'choose' a side in Spain for example. I have a few clubs that I like on the basis of peculiar things though. Rayo Vallecano have a song by one of my favourite bands, Cadiz featured in the form a loco fan on an old Nick Hancock video etc...

If you try and select a team so methodically, it'll never click or feel right.

This thread has made supporting a football club sound as exciting and meaningful as choosing a brand of washing powder, which is clearly ridiculous as I get my whites sparkling clean but my football club is absolute fucking garbage.

If you decide to support Kidderminster Harriers then you only have to change a single letter in your username to show your new affections. That's how I'd decide, anyway.

I like the the thought haha. What are the odds I ever actually get to witness this team play??

I'm actually quite optimistic about your chances of securing a ticket on general sale. You'd just need to come over here and watch them.

In all seriousness, look past the premier league. It'll be as sanitised and as corporate as all your main four sports in the States. Embrace the tinpottedness that only Britain can offer and choose a shit team. Follow them on the radio or social media or whatever and become known as the supporter from the other side of the world.

If you're in rural America, and plan on not travelling to the UK, then West Ham is a good bet, I think.

If you plan on visiting East London, sitting in a souless bowl of a stadium while 50,000 middle-aged men complain about the good old days, harrumph in an entitled fashion, and cackle like Catherine Tate's nan in your ear, then avoid THE 'AMMERS. Maybe support Bournemouth instead.

This is almost a word-for-word perfect definition of the American Football team in my hometown. College that used to have success 20 some years ago. So now that stadium is packed with young fans who know nothing of the "glory days" and old middle aged men who cry and complain about how the ole ball coach would've never let us play like this.

That's the way things go. Whatever sports it is, you'll always find the grumpy old men in the stands who are complaining about today's team and at the same time glorifying the "good ol' days" . That's something of a general "law of nature" :D

Haha love those old Nick Hancock videos - was that from football nightmares?

I've ended up in STOKE POGES.

I spotted something today while watching West Ham. I had no idea spectators aren't allowed to stand. Is this a rule for all stadiums? And why is standing not allowed?

Happy to be corrected, but pretty sure it was a direct consequence of the Hillsborough Disaster.

Briefly read part of the Wikipedia page on the disaster. It makes sense, but does that mean that if there's an exciting moment during the game (or any goal scored), that any fan who stands to cheer is subject to being ejected? It's interesting, just something I have never heard of.
