I missed this match. I read the matchday news and it seems that Sead Kolasinac (former Schalke 04 player) made a good first impression with his late goal.

tbh: I don't like this "ABBA"Format tbh.

How convenient that with GK Courtois, a Belgian (they are nearly french ) saw his "Waterloo" in the penalty shootout and all the english players converted (ABBA ->Waterloo ) . OK, Giroud, a frenchman too (but he lives now long enough in England)

Hope this format won't be introduced at Euros or World Cups. Would "destroy" our dominance over England in penalty shootouts because with this ABBA format they'll always win because of Waterloo....but wait....the Germans (in this case the Prussians) helped England against France at Waterloo. So everything should be "normal" even with this format

I can confirm that this is the case. Just over 2 weeks old.

Arsene hasn't posted for years. Storzy very occasionally drops by. Mustard every now and then to defend a police murder of an unarmed black teenager. Not sure what happened to thespus. Basically I'm the only one with the decency to stick around once we became shit.

It's still the curtain raiser of a season. Given how big football is in the UK, I would think there'd be some kind of interest.

Those who think the FA Community Shield isn't important are missing one simple fact about it.

It's played to raise money which is then distributed for various community based initiatives. It's intended to be football's way of giving something back. I think the FA should do more to emphasise this fact and perhaps gain some good publicity for a game that has become synonymous with conspicuous greed and self interest.

Formerly known as the FA Charity Shield it was re-branded as the FA Community Shield after the Charities Commission raised questions over distribution of proceeds from ticket sales.

"What?" I hear you say... "The FA involved in suspicious activity regarding money..? Surely not." Yes, I'm afraid so. Strange but true.

But this aside, I'm sure that many good causes benefit even if it is no longer "The League's Traditional Curtain Raiser To The New Season". Actually, it's becoming increasingly difficult to believe that the football season ever does actually end. Competitions finish, but football just seems to carry on.

I think it's something worth keeping, and in my opinion, the FA should make more publicity out of the good it does. Goodness knows, football could do with some positive publicity.

Contrary to what you might think, I respect the lower leagues and often find the English ones more entertaining than the Premiership (it certainly was the case in the big 4 days of Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool). However, a lot of people don't give 2 shits that Sunderland played on Friday and are desperate for some actual football (one that didn't kick-off at 1am in the South-East Asia). This fixture attracted much more interest a while back.

Whilst the matches between the best teams in the Premier League undoubtedly feature the most skillful players and the most advanced tactics that English football has to offer, some of them can be incredibly tedious. I've seen Manchester City make twenty.... twenty five.... more.... unchallenged passes across the centre circle and not advance towards their opponent's goal by more than a couple of metres.

Here they go.... back and across..... back and across..... back and across....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

For sure, David Silva is very good at retaining possession, but ohhhhh, it can be so dull, dull, dull to watch. Perhaps I'm missing something significant and tactically meaningful in all this, but there is only so much close controlled, inch-perfect passing a girl can marvel at.

The football in the lower leagues is less precise for sure, but it is more direct and occasionally, just belting the ball into opposition's penalty area towards some big lump of a player who actually tries to get a header at goal is a tad more watchable.

I have no axe to grind with the Premier League teams and when they "go for it", the football can be marvelous to watch. I might agree with anybody who says that there are probably more exciting matches than bland ones. But I'm afraid I have to say that when they're dull, they're very, very dull.

Thank goodness we still have some good old "sleeves rolled up, Get stuck in, Nobby, up and at 'em, lads" lower league welly to fall back on, just for jolly.
