I believe Schengen has been hugely successful as far as business and travel are concerned. It does however lend itself to criminal activity but where to draw the line. Besides plenty of British criminals have fled the country even with strict border controls, it's always happened.

I don't think you can just react to a maniac and completely change border controls, that's reacting to fear and giving the extremists exactly what they want. But people like Farage have jumped on the bandwagon, people like him love to capitalize on fear for their own ends.
