Best Away Day in the Divsion: Leyton Orient v Bolton

Well, we all had a wild time in the Grimsby v Mansfield thread didn't we, so let's do another one...

So this time we have Bolton with their top of the range, futuristic, "state of the art" stadium that opened in the 90s vs everyone's favourite East London cheeky chappies.

No brainer for me. Leyton Orient hands down. Situated on the best side of the best city in the country (No Adam not Manchester!). Beats the shit out of every single ground in the division in terms of pubs and food within a reasonable journey's distance and a decent enough away end. Bolton is at most going to be 25-40% full for almost every game this season and it's on the side of a motorway almost as close to Wigan as it is Bolton.

Can drink in Bolton/chorley or Manchester...train to ground

Going to sit on the fence a little here and say Burnden park was a much better away day than Brisbane road and Brisbane road is a much better away day than Horwich parkway‘s breezeblock stadium.

IF you can get to manchester for 10 its a great day either in the northern quarter...or printworks....1.54 train straight from victoria station to Horwich parkway....straight in the ground
Bolton town centre pubs are rough but theres a spoons and i would never pay above 2.50 a pint.......stop past horwich parkway is chorley...rough but they think they are posh....some decent boozers there.....i never go to the ground until at least 2.45

Went in the pubs in horwich when we first moved up there in 97....Then i moved house and now like to frequent Manchester or Bolton town centre pre game

Well, as an old Bolton fan no away fan liked Burnden, you kept your head down and your mouth shut walking to and from our ground, but before the supermarket end, the embankment was a huge end where home and away fans mixed and it was a proper ground. The Unibol is a souless typical new (relatively) football stadium. Orient may be small, but I have been once, and i like the atmosphere and the fans are nearer to th epitch, which is my mind is where new stadium fall down.

As a Horwicher who doesn't go drinking there on matchdays, it's funny to see out-of-towners talking about Blackedge... Aye it's great there. And I've been semi regular in the Crown (the Holts one on the roundabout) since it got done up. I like the pubs round here, but I can imagine they're not conducive to a proper footie away day.

any virtually anything is better than the grimness going somewhere dodgy as in London and paying £435.32 for a pint of Carling

they had painted wooden seating I think for what I remember, long time ago now

Orients away end is my fave in football, helped when carlisle’s London branch always made it their no.1 trip so we would take 1000.

An old school stand, good atmosphere, a side stand and close to home fans.....all usually make for better game

Orient had painted wooden seats like 7 or 6 years ago I think. An Orient fan can correct me if I'm wrong but I think they replaced them after a team (Colchester iirc) smashed them up.

The thing is with London that yeah you can pay over the odds for a shit beer that would be half the price in other places in the country, but a nice beer from Manchester or any city that has tap rooms and breweries is pretty much the same price as it is in London. If you want a cheapish pint of shit beer in London then just go to the skankiest looking places and it'll be a bit cheaper.

Even apart from everything else that London has to offer, there's a very decent and welcoming boozer round the corner from the Orient ground, it's a nice quite old-fashioned atmospheric stadium, and geez- they sell pie and mash in the ground! Top place.

The whole stands seats were replaced in the summer of 2014 after various away fans smashed the seats up multiple times. Think we billed one or two clubs for the damage, the seats were old and falling to bits anyway and were an easy target.

The stand has since had parts of it closed because the wooden floor was on the verge of collapsing.

We're hoping that the stand can last longer, but the reality is once the day comes that it fails to get a safety certificate, then we will have to look at knocking it down and replacing it. Which won't be easy or cheap.
