When Rovers are in full stride and actually start playing their best players who for some reason are sitting on the bench, they're going to take the league by storm!

Seriously, can't wait to see it. What a team! The reality is you beat a side by one goal who were well under par yesterday and still very much searching for a solution away from Vale Park.

Why is it your fans can mention you played below par, but when we mention we also played below par you act like we're claiming to be world beaters? You're the ones who's gonna bend us over if you play well remember! :pond:

I never said that you were anything like at your best, as I don't know what your best is? Weird comment to make. What I can say is that in comparison to the performances we've put in at home it's like night and day, and yesterday I thought we were terrible. But we did only lose the game by 1 goal and could have ever so easily got what would have been an undeserved point from the game. As it was, we didn't and I'm already looking forward to a much improved performance and hopefully 3 points back at Vale Park on Tuesday.

Oh, and it's your fans saying that you're in 2nd gear, have your best midfielders somewhat bizarrely on the bench, and that you're this apparent steam train that's only just getting ahead of steam, blah blah. If you don't end up winning the league surely most of you have to be somewhat dissapointed...

And I can't wait to see you absolutely steamroll us at Vale Park.

You said when we reach our best we should take the League by storm. Pretty much world beaters, for the League anyway. The same could apply to you lot the way you bang on about how you only played at 40% of what you usually can. Weird way to measure that, mind.

It feels a bit like you lot came on here with your excuses about playing poor away from home, and thought that all we could offer was what you saw yesterday. I don't get why you can't accept we played below par without kicking your toys out the pram. Vale are not the only team in the world to have off days.

Regarding the steam train comment, we generally start slow compared to this season. But most of it is tongue in cheek which is hard to understand on the internet!

There is nothing to say Vale will sort their away form. Gillingham a few years back didn't win a single game on their travels but were unbeatable at the Priestfield. The problem for Vale is that yesterdays performance / result seems to be the norm when they're away from home. It wasn't just one bad day at the office.

We weren't at our best yesterday and were missing our top scorer who in my opinion is one of the best players in L1. As for midfield, it's not so much we had our best players on the bench, they are just more creative and attack minded than those that played. We often bring them on during the second half and with the opposition tiring we dominate the final quarter and often score late goals. It was needed yesterday as we were already in front.

I think it's unfair to criticise any team when you only see them once and clearly Vale have been playing better at home because they've won 5 out of 5. We haven't put in any terrible performances but have had good days and average days like yesterday this season and I personally feel both sides will finish somewhere between 14th and 8th based on what I've seen so far.

We seem to be going around in circles here. I've not once said you played well or were anywhere near your best? I simply commented that you looked average on that performance, but that it was enough to beat us as we were pretty shite, especially in the 2nd half where we just didn't come out. First half 1-1 was about right, in my opinion, but we conceded at a terrible time. What on earth is wrong with that statement? All I keep hearing is how you were without your top scorer and apparently your best player who for whatever reason was on the bench. Fair enough. But we were also missing two of our more important players in Foley and Forrester ourselves, and had they both been on the pitch would have fancied us coming away with a point.

We're very much a work in progress, and we've been terrible on the road for a while now long before Bruno and all the foreign players arrived. At home I feel confident of beating any side in the league, and away from home I think we'd struggle against clubs from the league below for reasons unknown. I'm not paid to find the answers for that but our manager is, and hopefully he can turn it around or else we'll finish mid-table again no matter how well we play at home.

We've been in poor form away from home for a couple of years ago and sounds like yesterday was no different. We had a decent draw at Bradford and Peterborough, got destroyed by L2 Carlisle and although played well, colluded to lose at Swindon and had the shocker in the mud at Bury.

At home we've had some great results and performances including last season (L4 (1 dead rubber) and all four defeats were against sides who either won promotion or made the play offs so it's crucial we try and find the reason and formula as an average away record if we keep the superb home record would see us easily in the top six (last season we would have with an average away form).

Finding the solution is easier said than done though.

Once again Vale find a way to pop the enthusiasm bubble by turning in a pathetic performance to easily a gift a Rovers side who did not need to be at their best to win. It's just far too easy for teams to beat us away from home and we've got to revise our whole approach to playing away from Vale park.

First half was fairly even and once Vale went one up I thought we might be able to hold out as Rovers were resorting to ambitious shots from distance and Alnwick hadn't really touched the ball. Second half Rovers came out with tempo and enthusiasm and we just basically did not come out at all. Trevor Kettle was his usual inept self (how does he keep getting selected?) but he had no bearing on the result - definite penalty and a stupid challenge.

Typically, Moore had his one good patch in 5, although I'll wager after a season of him, Rovers fans will see the true Byron Moore come out. Lines was OK but he didn't need to be anything but OK. Put one challenge in him early and he's a pussy cat for the rest of the game, we didn't however.

Let's make no bones about it, we're never going to get anywhere playing like that away from home. No disrespect but I would hope that if we were to challenge at the top, we need to be getting results at Bristol as I see them as a mid-table team this year. If we play like we did against Scunthorpe and second half against Gillingham, I believe that we have enough to get results at most teams in this league. It's a poor league, highlighted by the fact that even when we lose, we don't drop down too much.

As I said before the game, we need to play a bit more ugly away from home. We need to be more 'professional' i.e. scrapping it out until half time, running down the clock a bit more, so that we go in one goal ahead. We're still very naive and try and play how we would play at home, it just doesn't work in front of a passionate home crowd.

We've got two home games now to make up for this, but Milwall will be hurting after a poor home defeat and very inconsistent start to the season. I see them challenging at the top, so this won't be easy. We've also got Coventry, who will be desperate to win a game and we are patron saints of ending a teams poor run.

The problem we have is that our poor away form is placing pressure on us to win our home games and we won't continue to have 100% record.

Excellent post. That was the most frustrating thing, that Rovers didn't need to play particularly well to win the game. They deserved to win the game, absolutely, but looked as average as I thought they would be. Had they played at the same level and we had reached the heights we've been capable of at Vale Park we'd have won this game comfortably. The 2nd half performance for whatever reason was simply unacceptable. All Rovers did was up their tempo a little bit and get more in our faces, and as with the game against Bury we completely capitulated as a side.

Tavares isn't intense enough for my liking and shouldn't start away from Vale Park where we have less of the ball. Amoros in all day long for me.

Lot of bickering on this thread, we got what we deserved, nothing. Decided to try and attack with about 5 minutes left. Let's ignore the goal , what does Paterson offer? utter garbage excuse of a player. Bristol were ok didn,t need to be any more really. The lad Gaffney was a handful and surprised they took him off. Foley proved what an important player he is to us as an attacking link , we need him back Asap.
First time at the ground, what a bizarre mish mash of a place, about 6 different stands none of which are alike, one was akin to a stand at a racecourse, funniest moment was when the guttering collapsed after being hit by the ball and Byron Moore using a portaloo for his number 2.
9000 crowds and a big club are worthy of more than that cowshed.

To be fair if Rovers got a new ground of a decent size they would have the potential there to do a Hull/Swansea type push. Could see their crowds easily doubling in a new ground considering the crowds they muster for Wembley etc.

Oh yes i agree, i was merely saying they deserve better than that, since Eastville they had rubbishy Twerton Park and now this thing. Potentially they are one of the biggest six clubs in our division , Bristol is a big city .
