About time the government put a stop to these health tourists and dodgy immigrants

They don't pay in to the system so shouldn't take out.

They should learn from the foreign doctors already here and contribute to society, what a piss take.

RULE BRITANNIA.

What about all the non immigrants without a passport?
A paid-for ID to get a service you already pay into isn't that great is it?

Times are tough and its only going to get worse thanks to the open door policy.

I feel for the fantastic yet far too overstretched NHS.

No wonder the NHS founders the Conservatives are trying so hard to save it.

This. Interpretors cost the NHS over £1M a year, which could be spent on wage rises for us NHS staff, or even replace all the old stuff that we still have to use.

Bevan gets the plaudits for the NHS but those of us who know our stuff will tell you it was a conservative idea originally.

This is the sort of stuff I'm on about, btw, when I say the UK is a racist shithole.

We've got something that, by any objective measure is a very small additional cost. A few years ago, when May was Home Secretary, she said that the "perception" that foreign nationals were travelling to the UK to access free healthcare justified a £200 charge on those people for using those services and to have GPs check immigration status of new patients.

This was despite the fact that the NHS at the time spent more on stationary than it does on "health tourism". And, perhaps more significantly, the NHS now spends more administering the new healthcare surcharge than it recoups from the scheme - and more than it spent on health tourism in the first place.

More importantly, turning GPs into border cops is a public health catastrophe - as undocumented migrants, already forced into overcrowded, damp, dangerous houses and workplaces, and already more susceptible to respiratory diseases, are unable to access healthcare. And so diseases we thought we'd consigned to the Victorian era like tuberculosis are making an exciting comeback - Newham in London has a higher rate of TB infection than Rwanda, for example. While there's other factors driving the TB epidemic - poor housing, homelessness, poor nutrition, deprivation etc - denying the most at-risk group access to healthcare is reckless.

This is part of a general trend to move borders into everyday life. A newish law - Right to Rent, demands that landlords check immigration status of prospective tenants. Of course, landlords aren't experts in immigration law and anyone with a complicated immigration status is now likely to find it much harder to rent from scrupulous* landlords. Racial discrimination in the private rented sector was already a massive problem and these new checks only serve to make it harder for anyone who isn't white to rent in this country.

Anyway, this passport scheme is nonsense. Firstly, it costs as much to administer as it recoups. Secondly, 13% of British citizens don't have a passport. If the problem is recouping money from non-resident EU citizens without an EHIC card, surely the problem would be better solved by asking non-resident EU citizens to produce their EHIC, rather than asking everyone to provide a passport.

* I don't believe a "scrupulous landlord" is a thing cos anyone with scruples wouldn't engage in rent-seeking, but you know what I mean. "Less unscrupulous" is maybe better.

A very well written post, but ultimately your saying let anyone come who wants to come cos its cheaper than trying to stop them.......meanwhile we all suffer with a decreasing standard of living unable to help our children get new homes and decent schools because we are full up with immigrants who travel through a dozen countries to reach ours ...........BOLLOX

Thin end of the wedge, bring this in for the worst of reasons and watch as it's used as leverage along with all their other tricks to bring in payment and erode the principle of universality,

Lets be honest we are all fed up of these immigrants taking the piss......i know i know some of them are here legally and we are trying to protect them from the war etc........but come on there are far too many economic migrants and add that too the open door to EU citizens we are currently in it's just far too many.

We are a little island and we cant keep taking this many in every year.........that's why we voted out imvho

So much so that you'll destroy the NHS out of spite just to make it harder for a few poor fuckers from abroad and the odd actual cheat that actually costs us next to nothing? Because that's what you're in favour of if you back this shit. They blow a dog whistle, you wag your tail then turn round and they've flogged your kennel.

Learn your history Aber, stop being a sheep like the rest.
The NHS was implemented by a Labour government that won power in a landslide. It came about for several reasons. Post war collective demanding, a changed expectation born out of the war years when the mass mobilisation of men and women had seen a kinda de facto health service. Churchill wasn't totally opposed to the concept although his vision was different and the same can't be said for several in his party. But the idea that a universal, free at the point of usage health service was a Tory vision is just not true I'm afraid.
You probably already knew that though LOLZ

Taken from a conservative idea circa 1910 and implemented by Labour who performed that poorly that they were chucked out of government for the next 20 years.......LOLZ

It's costing lives here and now because of the sheer volume of population, not matching the investment.

Take away the source of the problem not chuck money at it.

Straight up not the case Johnny. Vast bulk of immigrants are working age people healthier than average and paying their taxes, they'll more than cover the cost if the capacity was added where needed - which could and should have been managed rather than left to reach crisis I will agree. Then instead of doing that they come up with bollocks like this which pretends to be a solution when it isn't and as I said attacks one of the basic principles of the NHS, free unlimited access at the point of use.
And that's the real game for me, it was a miracle we got something like that through back in the day and they've wanted to claw it back ever since, hampered by how loved the service is and the fact that the model delivers the best health outcomes for the least money of any in the world but not profits for Virgin etc hence they want to dismantle it.

I read in the Telegraph a few months ago that they best estimate is £250 - 350 million is spent per year on looking after immigrants since Poland etc were allowed to enter UK under EU free travel ( this does not include non EU migrants).

I have no problem with working immigrants trying to better their lives but my opinion they should not be needed in the first place and in most cases it was Labours fault they are here anyway because they refused to invest in our own people.
