Not necessarily that. A lot of factors mainly beyond our control have prevented us from maintaining second and even third tier status.

Awful managers who failed to develop players adequately like Gudjon and Steve Davis are where the club are to blame.

But it's the ever-changing football landscape. Teams in the top two tiers fancy signings from abroad where the players are more physical and taller than your weedy Crewe Academy lads. Suddenly that makes us run at a loss if we can't sell players for big fees. If we're not selling players for big fees, our first team budget takes a hit and before you know it we're back to our traditional level instead of being a Barnsley who bounce between the middle two tiers.

In the 2000s we were pretty much selling a player for big money every year. Since Luke Murphy in 2013, our biggest sales have been a quartet of fees ranging from £300-400K. Thankfully, we've had two or three lucrative sell ons in that period as well which have eclipsed that, but there's a distinct lack of appetite for lower league talent UNLESS their teams are towards the top of this league.

Where we once sold to Liverpool and Manchester United, we're now selling to Wigan and Peterborough. That's the big difference.
