The after the lords mayor's show game....vs a side who cannot win (a fave Carlisle thing is to allow first wins to clubs).

Can Carlisle re-organize themselves after a hectic week to avoid the slip-up and get the win they should expect or could this be the right game at right time vs right team for Newport to get off the mark??

No wins in 10 for us so far this season so fingers crossed for Sat. Performances have been better than the results on the whole but its about time we started to win some games. No pressure on Pat at moment but could change before too long. Injured players like Matt Taylor / Andrew Hughes starting to return which is good and we have just signed a couple of youngsters today on loan (Tyler Blackwood, striker from QPR and CB/RB Janoi Donacien from Villa). Off the pitch the Trust takeover is gaining momentum and hopefully will succeed, giving us a lift on the pitch too.
Hopefully your boys will be knackered and on a downer from last night.
Carlisle and Crawley coming up for us, need to pick up 3 - 4 points.

Honestly I think the rest of the season will just be a wait for us to perform like we did against Liverpool again, if we could do that against a League 2 team then we wouldn't be conceding any goals and we'd still be as clinical up front. We're due a big win soon, our style of play means that if a team comes and plays badly against us we can probably hammer them and especially with Raynes and Gillespie in their current form; problem is the players obviously won't get themselves as up for it as they did against Liverpool so we're back to the lottery of whether our whole team plays well.

Our team will be tired but we have massive strength in depth so we can switch some players out and still be pretty comfortable with the team and formation. Ibehre didn't even start against Liverpool so expect him to start on Saturday.

I'm going to do my preview straight as I am thinking and if I end up foolish then so-be-it.

I personally feel if we fail to win this game Curle will be gone before turn of year after we hit a bad slump. On other hand if we win this game I think it could set us up at the turn of the year for a good top 7 push.

We should win this, Newport are poor, struggling and cannot win, we are strong at home and in confidence with 10 points out the last 12. There is no excuse to win this game in my own view.

As most others on this forum expected Newport to struggle, surprised how quickly they've collapsed though.

I hope he freshens the side up a bit. Start Troy, Atkinson, Brough, Ibehre, Balanta, Gilliead etc. I think the players who played 120 minutes on Wednesday night will absolutely need fresher legs around them otherwise it could be a struggle against a fit team absolutely desperate for points.

I don't want to be negative but I can't help it here. This is the type of game that a team loses after such a big effort in a cup match 2 and a half days earlier. Plus as mentioned we love giving winless sides the break they've been looking for.

I'm predicting a narrow Newport win.
1-2

The following starting line-up would still be a good one if we wanted to avoid players who played the full 120 on Wednesday

_______________________Gillespie(c)________________________
_____________Atkinson____Troy____Gillesphey____________
Thompson_______________________________________Brough
__________________Balanta______Kennedy_________________
___________________________Osei_________________________
__________________Asamoah______Ibehre__________________

Of that team, only Gillespie played the full 120. Gillesphey and Ibehre were second-half subs while Kennedy and Asamoah came off in the second half. The other six didn't feature at all.

Bench: Hanford, Raynes, McQueen, Grainger, Dicker, Hery, Gillead

#strengthindepth

Having said that I think it's unlikely Curle will be this extreme in resting the Anfield starters, I think McQueen and Raynes are probably likely to start (both of whom played the full 120)... and possibly Hery and Grainger too.

I'd give Gillead a loan extension ASAP if I were Curle, he'll be on peanuts and he's looked promising in all of his games so far. Gillesphey hasn't really had enough time to impress but looked good against Liverpool, no different to anyone else though.

Looking forward to this, not visited Carlisle before.

As mentioned above we have a couple of new loanees and am hoping Butcher will start with them.

I (perhaps naively) think we have half a chance of getting something if Carlisle are a bit tired from Wednesday.

Defeat wouldn't be disastrous but would make Crawley on Tuesday a must-win game, if you can have such a game this early on...

Noticed there wasn't already a thread made for this match, I'm new here so thought this is the prefect opportunity to create my first match thread! :gr:

Now Newport have not yet won a match this season but they are yet to score an away goal so I just thought I'd mention that even though I probably shouldn't have.

We should win relatively comfortably against a hopeless club, yes they're pretty much what we were like this time last season, but when the hell do we ever do we ever win games comfortably?

It's a game we 'should' be winning, there's no doubt about it. Newport have been rooted to the bottom for weeks now, and must be void of any confidence.

I'd still back Newport to score, especially if (when) we tire late on. Curle will make a handful of changes, which is understandable, as the players in back-up are still capable.

Team I think we'll go with:
Gillespie

Atkinson
Troy
Grainger

Thompson
Joyce
Balanta
Kennedy
Brough

Ibehre
Gillead

I'd like to think we can achieve a decent win against bottom of the league, but anything can happen.
4-2 Carlisle.

We haven't been playing too badly in all honesty, been devoid of luck at the wrong times. I really can't see us getting anything from this trip, despite Carlisle's efforts in midweek at Liverpool. Any positives from this match is what i'll take, and if we're very lucky we can nab a draw.

Goals have been a problem for Newport. If I was them I'd just absolutely go for it today. If ever ther was a team to boost goal confidence against its Carlisle United.

unless you're in a higher division apparently, then you'll struggle.
Disappointed we didn't get that clean sheet that I expected on Wednesday night. The goal was so avoidable as well, even by our standards.

If they'd just stuck rigidly to the managers' instructions of 'pass it around till you get within 20 yards of the goal, then put it in the back of the stand' then we would have won.

Newport will be looking for revenge for Aldo's honour. Hopefully we'll do a professional job today.

We've made 7 changes from the 11 that started at Anfield.

Jabo Ibehre has torn his hamstring.

2 months out I reckon.

Fucking disaster!

Whilst I thought we'd lose today, it doesn't make it any less disgusting.

This team is an utter disgrace. A team that haven't scored an away goal come to Brunton park and turn us over.

If this isn't the wake up call people need to see that we're going to be in another relegation battle, then I don't know what is.

I can see a ban coming for HG.

Seriously though, it's hardly a surprise is it? This 'playing well against a PL or a CP club' thing and then struggling against a poor side is hardly new. Plus, as we found out for ourselves last year, L2 is very unpredictable. York, Tranmere, Cheltenham and Pools all got wins against us last year, and so far this season, Crawley have only won one match, and that was a 3-0 win at The Abbey.

I don't think we'll go down though, but I'm expecting bottom 6-8. We concede far too many goals so we've absolutely no chance of anything higher.

Hello Gregorys rants are normally over the top and unwarranted , but he is more than justified after today , hands up anyone who really saw this result ?

Certainly not me, I was hoping for a draw at best for us, never thought we'd take all three points, but i'm over the moon with that happening.

Me. Look further up the thread at my prediction. Didn't get the exact score but could see nothing but a Newport victory.
