Oh Shoddy, I nearly forgot to tell you. Rumour is we're going to have a new competitor league to our little one, the CTFC one. The three competing sides are nowhere near our standard, obviously, but I was enjoying the monopoly we had before all this.
Crawley Town, Cheltenham Town..... Ches Terfield? Or has Coventry's city status been rescinded? There's no challenge there, none to worry about that's not tinpot anyway.

Oh ffs :ffs: Don't tell anyone but I was thinking Chesterfield Town. This is unforgivable

Haha, good suggestion but I reckon there are more suitable people on our mb who are much more intolerant of Derry than myself. But yes, I'm definitely on the Derry out side, and have been for quite some time now.

As for this year, I'm always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt so to speak, and I wasn't that disappointed we were beaten at Exeter. For starters, they are a decent side and I predicted them for the play offs this year, so I knew it was going to be tough. Secondly, Carroll's needless handball didn't help things at all and made a tough job even tougher. So a 1-0 defeat is all understandable afaic. But you're wrong that very few of us have watched the team play this year, as loads did watch the Exeter match via iFollow. I don't reckon anyone of us had to watch the Cup game to make up our minds, as there was nothing to see.

But then what does our maverick manager goes on to do - he makes 9 changes and plays the kids at the Mem against The Gas, when the word was already out they were going to play their first team. To me this signifies loads of things - he doesn't a fuck about the travelling fans (did you get a refund btw? No? Thought so), he doesn't care about protecting the younger players at our club (any manager worth his salt knows that pitting your kids against much more experienced ones only helps to chip away at any confidence they may have), he saw the match as a pre season friendly (like we didn't play enough PSF already this year), and he also wanted to rest his first choice players. Now, and I'm sure that anybody who knows what he's talking about will concur with this, players at all levels of the game will be raring to go after all that gruelling pre season training and PSF matches. IOW, not one of the playing squad needs to do any resting after only playing a single league match.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on why Derry continued to further alienate the fanbase after that mind boggling line up. But you get the gist on why my hopes that this year will be different have already vanished into thin air.

Here's a tune for the eternal optimist.

I had a long rambling response that I'm pleased I binned before posting.

I see myself as a possibilist rather than an optimist but on balance, at times like these

Legend. I'm keeping that in the bank for when the spirerites get lary later this season. :-D
Surely 'town' would be an upgrade for them.

Off tangent, what other leagues are possible. Three teams (or at a push, National league, but promotion at some point has to be realistic) with the same initials.

BFC - Barnsley, Bury, Barnet, Burnley, Blackpool, Brentford... could possibly even add Barrow. Common as muck that one.
BCFC - Bristol, Bradford, Birmingham
SUFC - Sheffield United, Scunthorpe United, Southend United... actually was a thing in League One last year come to think.

At this point I realise having three teams in the same league with the same initials maybe isn't such a special thing after all. Still, there'll only be one CUFC league.

Notts County, Newport and Norwich though needs some sort of Delia collapse to happen.

Stoke, Swansea and Stockport must have happened back in the day.

Man U and Maidstone? ;-)

Can't think of any 4 letter acronyms of more than 3 teams which are realistic.

Go ahead and share your thoughts Alan. I'm all for different opinions, and I've often discovered that mine was wrong after somebody else challenges my views with a well constructed counter argument. OTOH, I do my best to not engage with people who think they're always right or resort to insults, but this doesn't apply to you, or any other fellow U's fan on this forum, so your thoughts are most welcome afaic.

It's a shame I can't be there today. Hopefully the team give a good account of themselves and whilst I'm expecting us to lose (I don't see how our defence can cope with Berry, Ibehre and co) I'm hoping there's some positives and improvements from last weekends poor show.

In essence, I was saying:

1) It's possible that, with folk like Leon, Greg, Forde, Deegan and Jabo in the squad and onside, Derry may be more than capable of delivering the home results to go with the away performances that we know are there. Last season showed that he can motivate and work with the senior pros in a team. I just wish he had an assistant that was offering more tactically at this stage in his career.

2) If it doesn't work out, we''ll know pretty soon now but simply replacing Derry will not be a magic fix. With control-freak Jez at the centre of things, we're unlikely to get anything other than another inexperienced coach on a steep learning curve. I'm not saying I want rid of Jez and his ways, just recognising that his all pervading influence will be a factor (for good and bad) and potential source of frustration for future coaches/managers.

The rest was a pointless ramble around the pros and cons of working with a guy as intense and driven as Jez.

Don't think we've had a match thread with both sets of fans as negative as this, it's only Carlisle's pessimism that gives me optimism.

I'm bored with Derry already so I won't be attending today.

I'm surprised at the negativity of the Cambridge fans, I just assumed you'd had a good summer and would be fancied to do well. That's also the one thing giving me hope today.
We did.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

We'll probably win 5 - 1 in spite of Derryball. Although I didn't play my Joker in Oaky's predictor.

Our u18s have just come back from 5-1 down against Port Vale to win 6-5.

I'd take a similar scoreline today :2thumb:

I've got my wish for a pacy CB - 21 yr old Kyle Howkins from WBA, played at Mansfield last season. Hoping he might even get a start today but just happy that he's in the building.

Glad we've gone two up front, but I'd rather see Miller partner Bennett. Surprised Jones has been dropped, though Liddle did look better in midfield than defence. Two big centre defenders against two big centre forwards, should be a good battle.

That lineup is horrendous. Dropping Jones is mad.

I'm even less hopeful than I was yesterday

Playing two big strikers upfront without having a good crosser like Mingoia starting should be interesting. Looks like Berry will be playing out of position.

Thank fuck for that. Sounds like we were very lucky, both in terms of Cambridge not scoring and in terms of refereeing decisions.

Get in

Sounded ugly and possibly got lucky but it's what we needed after last week.

Great 3 points at what's been a tough away ground down the years for us

No you weren't lucky at all, you deserved the win 'cos you lot were the better side. In fact, and if i'm being honest, you could've easily gone in 3-1 up at ht.
