In light of the shocking events in London (and Naples?) tonight I thought it would be good to inform people that I have it on good authority that Scotchy McScotchface* will shortly be along to reassure us all that, contrary to all appearances, English teams are still a load of old toss.

Phew!

Could do but we won't beat City I think.

Actually they're pretty good. Y'know, except you.

EDIT: I just understood what you did there.

Solid 3 - 0 win tonight playing in second gear. Lovely.

Another injury though with Wijnaldum going off early in the first half with a twisted ankle. The injuries are really piling up just now.

All English sides to top their group?

Still some dangerous sides who would come 2nd but they will all fancy their chances.

Man C and PSG looked most impressive so far?

Dortmund and A.Madrid in danger of going out - what has gone wrong there..

Your prediction of a missed penalty was spot on too.

Met up with Satch and watched the Napoli v City match in a little Italian cafe/deli near my work that doubles up as a London based Napoli supporters group. Lots of animated Italians banging walls and ceilings and gesticulating. Thought the 4th goal flattered City somewhat, who achieved an impressive result in rather un-Pepesque fashion. However, Napoli defended poorly for all of the goals so can't complain about conceding so many at home and they should have taken advantage of the periods of the match in which they dominated more than they did. What Napoli can complain about though is the couple of offside calls that the officials got wrong.

Both are in a pretty horrible groups, in all fairness. Including the "easy" fixtures in that, too. Qarabag and APOEL both looked decent in qualifiers and I'm not surprised they've not been steamrollered in every match. Still, I think Atletico had about 25 shots in total on Tuesday though! Not sure about Chelsea topping that group either, it will probably depend on whether or not Roma can get something at Atletico. What would really set things up nicely would be Altetico to beat Roma and Chelsea to not win at Qarabag.

That is probably the best result in Tottenhams history. Fair play that they are enjoying it.

Real are in a downward spiral, particularly following defeat to Girona. Luck was against them in the form of an offside and a deflection but that happens. Great sides go through this cycle of being on top of the world then becoming complacent.

Dortmund drew twice with them last year in the group stages, and they still won the CL. So hope for them yet.

After 5 years of shocking performances English clubs might finally live up to their potential on the European stage. Having the money they have, and doing as badly as they have recently, is quite astonishing. They might finally turn it around.

English teams have indeed been shite of late, however if you're using the phrase European stage over Champions League then you have to note that Man Utd won a European trophy last season.

Exactly. Liverpool the year before was mentioned too. So not just so bad if you ask me. We inherited the " shite" now from you and are on a downward spiral. After the all german CL final in 2013 we reach nothing now. Dortmund embarrassing in all 4 CL matches so far, can't win against Apoel even at home. If I were a bit sarcastic I would say that happens if you change a german coach for a dutch one, but I am not :D
Leipzig still too wet behind the ears in European competition, could be seen yesterday in Porto. And Bayern? OK, they've won all their 6 matches under Jupp Heynckes yet but there was only one strong opponent (and that was HSV in the Bundesliga :D ). Still yet to prove they can do it again to reach the semis. They were abysmal under Carlo Ancelotti (who looked like he can't be arsed in the 0-3 match against PSG), now at least they look decent. Not yet strong for the big guns in Europe but they are already qualified (in a weak group were only PSG is a strong opponent). Jupp has now 3-4 months time to bring Bayern back on track.

Anyway, I don't want to forget to congratulate all English CL teams (ok Chelsea lost but will make it nonetheless I am sure). Very strong performance. Always nice to see a team beating Real Madrid.

Always a dig at the Dutch eh, you guys and them are just as bad as the Scotch and Sassenachs are with each other. ;)

Yes, to be fair, English teams did well in the second tier of European Compeition.

I should have clarified it was only the Champions League they have done very badly in. Looks like that coiuld be changing this year.

Haven't watched the highlights from last night, but I do think that RBL might sneak through. If Porto don't get anything at Besiktas and they can avoid defeat at Monaco they're arguably in a better position than Porto. I'd probably rather play an already qualified Besiktas than a Monaco playing for pride. They looked decent in the home leg vs Porto from what I saw.

Do not mess with me, Salty ;)
I know about the "Sassenach" (watched Outlander :D ) as a meaning for the "little Englander" but it originates from the Saxons (in German "Sachsen").

Sassenach is derived from the Scottish Gaelic word sasunnach, literally meaning 'Saxon'

You can move onto the fact that the UEFA Super Cup hasn’t been won by an English club since 2005 next.

I wonder why the teuchters (there's another one for ya! ;) ) chose to use that form of word to describe a saxon as that language as far as I'm aware, isn't derived from the Germanic languages unlike Scots and English.

Anyway, just what is it between you lot and the Dutch!?!

Haha yeah, I've been back in England for over a year now mate. Was never really planning on staying in Korea forever.

Satch hasn't been in London very long, but yeah he's doing a masters here. Are you in London?? I thought you were in Germany?

I left Germany 2 years ago. I'm back in a Parisian suburb called Asnières. Life is good.
