The English sides involved so far have looked very good, aside from Chelsea -- and even then, they have a very good side on paper. Not too bad considering how poor the Premier League was said to be even a year ago. That's where 100s and 100s of millions of pounds can take you I guess.

Tbf to Liverpool and Tottenham though they haven't exactly been flouting the cash comparatively speaking since Klopp and Pochettino came in. Indeed I think Tottenham may be in the black on net spend.

Net spend is comparatively lower but Liverpool still eclipsed the 100m mark on gross expenditure this Summer. I mean, you could justifiably say that Liverpool are operating in an inflated market, and will in turn receive inflated prices for their players, but as I recall from the early stages Liverpool themselves played an active role in producing this inflation (as have pretty much all of the Elite European clubs).

Seems like a fucking racket to me, but never mind.

How much did Oxlade-Chamberlain cost again?

They spent ~80 mill (excluding Keita which will be incorporated in next summer's window) and received ~37 mill back. For a huge club thats not bad.

I agree that Liverpool have been one of the instigators of big spending for decades though, I think they've spent well over a billion since the PL came into being. The costs have sky-rocketed these last few years though and it doesn't seem to be slowing down. We could have the first £1 billion player within the next few years if it continues at this pace!

40 mill which is too much for a young lad with potential imo; but that's where the market is at. He'll prove to be a 'bargain' over the next few years.

Do the inverted commas in this instance serve as replacements for the words "not in any way, shape or form".

How English are these sides though out of interest? How many English players have played for them?

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
City have had Stones, Walker, Delph and Sterling in the side regularly with Foden making a couple of appearances and another from Adarabioyo.

Spurs have Trippier, Rose, Dier, Alli and Kane as regulars.
Man Utd have quite a few, but no nailed on starters bar maybe Jones at CB this season before his injury, with Smalling, Lingard, Young and Rashford getting plenty of minutes. Rashface has played asmuch as Jones, though the cb would likely have played a lot more but for injury.
Chelseas slim pickings are bit parters in Cahill, Drinkwater and Moses if you wanna count the latter, Nigerian by birth and NT but played for our youth sides.
Liverpool have a decent number, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold, Milner, Hendo, Ox, Sturridge and Solanke. Lallana, Ings and Flanagan are dead apparently.

Well Lallana and Clyne would've played as well had they been fit.

Good draw for all English clubs bar Chelsea and, to a lesser extent, Spurs.

Bayern vs Besiktas, that is (no offense) the best they could get. Thank God no Barca or Roma, let alone a PL club. Satisfying.
PSG vs Real that's a cracker one...normally PSG exits in Quarterfinals. Looks like they are going one round earlier this time :D

Fraud!! Bayern had the highest prob to get Liverpool, Tottenham or Roma but instead they got Besiktas with the lowest prob :D

Chelsea got the expected tough tie but rest of the English teams can be happy...

Battle of the big egos in Madrid and PSG then !

My predictions for progression in bold. Lots of people wrote off Spurs in the group stages and they were fantastic and fully deserved top spot. But I have a sneaky feeling Juventus will do them over two legs in the next round. Chelsea may as well not turn up and I fancy PSG over Real. Some great match ups though.

Aye will take that for sure. Think Chelsea could do Barca as well, they aren't that good and Spurs have it all to do against Juve but they should be some great games anyway. PSG v Real as well, oh my!

Don't think we'll progress. Our limitations in terms of self-belief were shown for all to see at Bayern. Real have the big game players to step up and progress. We just don't have that. Depending on Neymar's mood that is.

Bar a spanking you'd already won the group hadn't you?

But the spanking was well underway at half-time and we were shitting our pants à la Barca all over again. Granted it didn't happen but we were very close. The mental strength of this squad (and of this club) is as weak as it was last March.

I would like PSG to go French only and become an alt French national side. Fuck Neymar off, bring in Dembele, Lemar, Martial. Try for Kante. It'd be sweet.

That's a lame-ass Christmas wish, chimp.

What, so predictions can only be made if they're stupid? Shut the fuck up.

Right. So making a prediction on a footballing forum shouldn't be bothered with unless it's going against what is most likely?

Perhaps you should go elsewhere.
