But do "official figures" include those going down on off chance or even living near ?
Not exactly rare.
Done it myself with others
This kicks in when the tickets given is ludicrously small too

Official figures are the number of away fans in the allocated away end. Not a difficult concept.

Its seems a difficult concept for NON Newcastle fans to accept that there may actually be - a LOT - of visiting fans in other than the "allocated away end"

Hardly a new concept sugartits, happened with plenty of clubs at this level, you have great support, we get it, but for the sake of this thread you accept official numbers only, ok sweetie??

Our away end holds 6,000. There were scattered small but clear gaps among supporters. There were no tickets available on the day.

5,501 will be the correct figure, give or take maybe a dozen or so. Still fantastic support for a Tuesday night.

There was empty seats in the Newcastle end, but it sold out the other week. I think their allocation was 5700 so it does seem weird that 5500 was the official figure. It's been the same with us this season, we sold out 3170 for Derby away, but something like 3070 was the official figure. Take into account that Derby away sold out 3 weeks before the game. Reading sold out a week before the game with our allocation being 4300, but only 4030 was officially there. Personally I think the ticket offices, ours and whoever we are playing are getting the actual allocations wrong, hence why you usually get less there than has been quoted by the ticket office. It's been the case for most of our away games this season. There is no way your going to have 100-300 fans not actually turning up when they have purchased tickets, the odd few yes but not hundreds.

I think you're correct there, as I always thought our maximum away allocation was 4100. Never seen an away figure of more than that at the Madejski, though it only gets a 4k+ figure once every 3 years or so.

Looking up on our club website it does say that the South stand can fit 4350 maximum allocation, but assume that would be if for home fans with no areas for segregation or whatever else would hold it back. No way if it seats 4350 would 4350 tickets be on sale.

I want to know how the opposite can happen too. I'm sure when Yeovil were up here a few seasons ago the official figure of our away attendance was larger than their stated capacity/amount of tickets on sale.

Nothing to do with them up and celebrating a goal then ? I suggest you have another look at the Villa fans end last night. Clear empty seats and more than would be accounted for with the odd character going for a late pie or p*ss ! ;-)

we were supposed to have sold out an allocation of 5,900 though i tend to think villa loyal is right in that the ticket offices are getting the numbers wrong. if that away end holds 6k then there definitely wasn't 5,900 there going off the pictures i've seen.

You sure mate ? That "no tickets on the day" is contrary to what was said on radio
Just checked - even your own club site saying tickets available up to 5 o'clock last night.

calm down lad. I'm not saying you never sold out I'm just saying that the picture I looked at there was a few empty seats for some reason. You sold out Barnsley the other week like we sold out reading last week. It's not a competition.

Oh but it is. It's Newcastle Vs Villa didn't you know? We're rivals now apparently.

Remember trying to calm a bit of trouble the other season at ours between us and Newcastle before the game. I got spat on for my troubles by some so called Geordie hard men. After that day I started to dislike Newcastle fans. About an hour after the game another mouthy mob tried giving it the big un outside the Witton arms but got smashed and ran into a takeaway place for cover but some of our lot ran and smashed them in there too. It was a bit uncalled for, but after what happened before the game I thought bollocks to them.

Advanced sales (ie up to 5pm) is different to POTG.

Don't see why he's arguing about their following last night. It was a brilliant following, even by a team who are doing as well as they are. I believe it sold out, I'm sure it did but he seems insecure about it for some reason. I think they also had a few in the home ends, great but it's nowt new.

According to local paper 6,000 Newcastle fans at Barnsley
so your basically going off what someone else has said, like I did in another thread which you pulled me for. According to this other paper we had 10k at reading.

Brighton have gave us another 500 tickets. So what started at 2300 has now ended up 3200.

I don't think there are any Barnsley fans under the illusion that there were no Newcastle fans in the home ends last night. Attendance was 18,597 with 5,501 official away fans. There was 15,830 for the Villa game with 3737 away. Call me cynical but I find it hard to believe a thousand extra Barnsley fans fancied this one considering the form of both Newcastle and ourselves.

Not that it matters of course when it comes to official away followings.

They had an allocation of 5500 odd, their season ticket holders and members sold 4700 and 800 were opened to non members according to one of their websites.

All official sources are just giving the 2800 allocated rather than those that attended ...

EDIT: Then again, after having a look at all the other match reports this season they have given an accurate figure e.g 5501 at Barnsley. So unless Villa can perhaps shed more light on it I might be inclined to say it was that.
