Johnson's a dead man walking now, and the board have simply delayed the inevitable. It's no secret the new chairman doesn't want to stick with Johnson, but he has to convince the rest of the board.
The time has come now, he can't keep living off his one good season (and what a season it was by the way), and his record in the Football League with us shows 102 games and just 26 wins - that's not good enough.
In his radio interview after yesterday's game he sounded a beaten man, he clearly has no idea what to do and he genuinely believes that there are no good strikers/forwards available. That's absolute bollocks of course, Grimsby signed Wes Thomas on Friday and he would have had a field day against Carlisle's defence yesterday. Replacing one of our only forwards with a defensive midfielder (who played as a target man) really was the straw the broke the camel's back, there is no way Johnson can win fans back now.
As for yesterday's game, we were ok in two thirds of the field, defensively quite sound (I've not seen the highlights yet, but there were claims of a foul in the build up to Carlisle's goal), the midfield looked in control, then as soon as the ball went into the box, nothing. We simply had no-one to put chances away. We're playing a winger (who was playing for Merstham last season) up front and literally lobbing the ball up in the hope he can use his pace to get onto something. He did a few times, but he doesn't have the composure to control the ball into the goal. The fact that Ben Tozer was brought on up front instead of Liam McAlinden says everything about the pointlessness of his signing (2 year deal by the way).
We're not too much of a mess, and what we've got is definitely salvageable, but we need Johnson out so the new man has a couple of weeks of the loan window to bring in the necessary requirements. Lose to Macclesfield on Tuesday and Johnson will be gone.
