Shit. I always make it a point to log on here during ht so I can read HG's assessment of the first half. It looks to me that even when Carlisle are on top, he'll find a way to downplay their superiority.

In hindsight, Shoddy's idea (a couple of seasons back) of giving HG a punishment for his pessimism was a brilliant idea, with my only regret being that of not voting for forcing HG to get himself a Barrow ST, which I believe was Alan's suggestion. This was before we had the pleasure of having Carver as a member of this fine forum, so this could be one reason why it all went smoothly. Never thought HG could be so positive after the punishment was meted out.

Yes obviously last season where we did alright and HG wasn't allowed to be pessimistic gave us a bit of a false sense of how pessimistic he might be in a season where we're doing really well.

I don't think it was my idea though... I think I suggested a forfeit and someone else (could even have been you, or perhaps Murphy or someone) made the suggestion that he had to be optimistic for a season.

Pessimistic this season? Hold on a sec, I rightly predicted we'd lose to Grimsby (I actually predicted a closer score line - guess I was too optimistic!) but before that I'd openly predicted 9 points from 3 games - we got 7 so again I was overly optimistic.

I criticise our defence and mentality sometimes even when I'm happy with the result, e.g Luton away but that's not pessimism that's me saying what I'm seeing in front of me

I thought it was you who came up with the idea. Can't recall who it was then but I'm sure it wasn't me.

I like the 'mini league ' idea ......I know I'll regret this , but what if there was a 'UFC' mini league so Pools could enter , would we be any better off ?

I think... are Hartlepool the only United in this division who aren't also a CUFC?

Somehow I can't see you being better off.

Jabo to be back amongst it today, a brace for him from the bench to follow a screamer from Luke Joyce.

So 2-1 down at half-time. Sounded like we didn't get going until they scored, another sloppy goal conceded apparently.

It's a familiar theme from these sort of away games, creating good chances but not taking them and then conceding sloppy goals.

So close HG.

edit just see this ''Maybe the 0 part is unlikely, but the 4 is very possible'', so make that spot on not so close.

Well it has sounded like a terrible second half performance, comfortably beaten.

Curle HAS to get this defence sorted, James Phillips just branded it pathetic. 9 goals conceded in 3 games is embarrassing for a team in our position. Bar Grainger and Miller I wouldn't be bothered if any of the defenders left this window, pure shite.

I was looking at our forthcoming fixtures, need 9 points from the next three games as after that it looks very tough.

Fair play HG, I didn't expect such a hammering today but it sounds like they gave up a bit towards the end.

Glad I'm not making the trip back anyway.

Perhaps sellling Wyke and getting in 3 new defenders isn't such a bad idea.

The thing is, the players we've been linked with are mostly midfielders and forwards. I hope Curle recognises the key concern, and fast.

I think that someone as smart as Curle will know what the side's lacking. I mean, I've only watched you lot once, and yet could tell your back four were the weakest link. A look at the goals conceded column will also confirm this, so it should be pretty obvious to the manager I'd think.

It's been a problem since he took over (continued on from previous managers) and he's not yet been able to solve it. The style of football we play probably makes the defence look even worse too.

I thought it was a good, entertaining game. We came out of the blocks well and impressed until we went in front, but then Carlisle started to take a bit of control over the game for the next quarter of an hour or so before levelling things up. Their set pieces were generally clever and had us in all sorts of bother, and the attacking play was excellent. I thought Kennedy stood out, he seemed to have a bit of a free role and was popping up everywhere, usually unmarked and in too much space.

The first half was pretty evenly contested though and end to end. The 2-1 scoreline at half time could have gone either way without too many complaints to be honest, we rode our luck at times.

The second half was probably the opposite of what I was expecting though to be honest, we blew Carlisle away and ought to have scored a few more. It felt like relentless pressure at times with far too many really good chances missed between the third and fourth goals - occasional forays forward from Carlisle threatening to make it 3-2 and create a nervy finish.

Kurtis Guthrie has been a complete revelation since moving further forward too. We signed him as a striker only to waste him in central midfield for the first four months of the season, he was a passenger. Since moving to two up top and letting him play further forward he's been absolutely superb, and fully deserved his hat-trick today - seven goals in nine now.

Hey long time no see! :bye:

Hello Cumberland Sausage and welcome to 1FF. You will like the Carlisle fanbase on here and although hellogregory can be a negative pain in the arse, he makes up for it by being a loyal supporter.

ShoddyCollins on the other hand, well, he is one good fella.

Just back.

Well I hate to say it but that score line came as no surprise. This is the third game in a row I've seen where we've defended like a Sunday morning blind football team. We got away with it at Crewe, Grimsby punished us and Colchester really punished us. By all accounts we were poor defensively at Notts as well.
We are clearly missing Jones in midfield, but that still doesn't excuse some of the incompetent defending we're seeing. We're gifting teams 4, 5 or 6 glorious chances every match. This has to stop.

Alarm bells should be ringing. We actually played some decent stuff today, yet due to an atrocious defensive display we deservedly got humped. We always looked a threat going forward first half. Devitt was probably our stand out player in the central midfield role. Overall we possibly edged that half and were on the front foot for a lot of it, but obviously went in half time behind due to the fact we cannot defend and were punished by some good finishing to be fair to Colchester.

Second half Colchester were far better but we still had 2 great chances through Wyke and in particular Kennedy... but that's where any positives end I'm afraid. The shambolic defending second half even shocked me, the last 5 minutes were like a comedy show, gifting Colchester chance after chance. First an easy 2 v 1 chance which they wasted, then 30 seconds later gifted them an even easier 2 v 1 chance which they again wasted, then a few minutes later just before full time gifted them ANOTHER easy 2 v 1 chance which they nearly wasted until someone smashed the follow up in. When I say gifted, I mean literally passing or heading the ball straight into their forwards paths for the 2 v 1 chance situations. Comedy defending at its hilarious best, one of our clumsy defenders even managed to get sparked out in the process. I would be laughing if it wasn't so damaging. In fact Colchester fans were probably pissing themselves laughing. It really was embarrassing to be associated with.

Now onto the individual culprits... first up Macauley Gillesphey. I feel for the lad cos he's not a left back but is being asked to play there. But honestly he's shit, positionally clueless and lacks any confidence in that position, it's obvious by the timid approach he has to going forward with the ball and his poor distribution (an attribute that is strong when he plays CB). His clueless diving in which lead to us being absolutely ripped open for the 3rd goal summed it up, that same thing happened numerous times down his side. I never want to see him play left back again. If Wright isn't good enough until Grainger is back then we need to sign another or recall Brough.
Now Shaun Brisley. Good header for the goal but makes far too many mistakes, he and Ellis played star roles in the comedy 5 minutes towards the end that I mentioned further up.
Now speaking of Mark Ellis. Well he's worse than Brisley, on today's evidence I want him gone and replaced, he was all over the place second half and as i say played a huge part in the comedy 5 minutes. I don't want him anywhere near our team. Utter dog faeces.
I kid you not, that today was the worst defending I've seen from Carlisle since 2 years ago when we nearly went down, and that back then was one of the shittest teams I've ever seen.

It could be a blessing that we've been exposed in the first 2 games of January because at least we have time to do something about it. If we don't then we're going to suffer many more defeats until Jones and Grainger are back because that as it is will not get us promoted. We were drawing too many as it was, but instead of turning draws into wins we're now turning draws into defeats. How far we drop would be anyone's guess. But if our club really do want promotion then they have to back Curle to strengthen this month, because there's no way this team can cope as a promotion contender with the injuries we have unless we sign better quality in key areas to cover what we've lost and add to. In the short term he's just going to have to chop and change to find the least shit defensive combination from the current piles of stool he has at his disposal and hope for a miracle.

I understand I'll get called out for being negative etc, but it's time you woke up and smelled the shite. At the moment this team is not good enough to get us where we want to be. We're currently in an extremely dodgy habit of failing to take chances and being utter shit defensively. A combination that is a recipe for some absolute hammerings if teams take chances against us. Huge month ahead for us as far as this season goes.

Have to give Colchester some credit. They took advantage of our inept defending, their number 24 is excellent and Elokobi defended really well especially first half when we were looking very threatening.

Well pissed off to say the least. What a complete waste of a Saturday.

I actually agree with most of that, drastic changes needed defensively otherwise we'll continue to concede simple goals. I think we've got a promotion-worthy midfield and attack, let down by a Conference standard defence.

I didn't think we'd miss Grainger as much as we have, I wouldn't say he's a great defender but we've got no real replacement. I'd like to see Gillesphey back in the middle of defence, performs much better than when he's shifted out left, probably partnered by Raynes. Sounds like Grainger and Jones could be months away from returning, I think we have to bring in a left back capable of defending to a reasonable standard.

Hopefully some new faces ahead of the Morecambe game, but I won't hold my breath.

Yes I'm doing good now Sausage as I've learned how to post constructively and not get angry at the slightest thing. By the way since you showed up again Carlisle have been playing bad just like they were 2 years ago. So I might not be too happy for very long if things continue the way they are...

Brisley can't defend and Gillesphey is simply not good enough at left back. After watching the highlights we could of been beaten by 5 or 6.

Got to sign a couple of good defenders especially a left back if we want to make the play offs this season.

Having seen the highlights I'm not convinced our goal to make it 2-2 should have been disallowed. Looks to me like Kennedy could have been level.
