Drums at Football Grounds

Like others, if played in time and there's a decent amount of fans joining in then it could work out. I thought it worked really well at Aldershot when I went there in the Semi's of the Trophy. Always remember Cambridge being OK too.

We don't use a drum so I have nothing really to add to this.

But some Cheltenham fans used to call Aldershots ground the mini selhurst park because of the atmosphere and whoever plays the drum there is fantastic at it.

What happened to the Wymans drum? We originally had two (I helped pay for the first one), one behind the goal and one in the Big stand up near the away fans. The first one broke the skin and has never been replaced. The second one was still being used as far as I can recall.

I agree with Jemfy and slaphead, when done right drums are brilliant. When done wrong they're awful.

I'm all for anything that improves the atmosphere, but l I'd like some consistency. I used to be chair of the supporters trust at Crawley, League and Non League, and we had a supporter with a drum. We'd end up asking permission to bring it, have permission granted, and then have it denied entry. On occasions we even had it allowed in and then were told we couldn't play it, including a memorable day at Preston where we were allowed to play it, then had it confiscated, then were given it back, and then had it confiscated again because "it hasn't got a safety certificate."

Regularly we'd be banned from bringing in a drum on safety grounds only to find that the home supporters had two. And nobody could ever explain what the safety grounds were. It wasn't likely to catch fire. It wasn't so big that it would cause an obstruction. The drummer was hardly likely to beat anyone to death with a drumstick (although on occasions when he played it out of time I wanted to do hims serious harm with said implement).

All I would say is that clubs either ban them for everyone, or allow them to be used by both sets of supporters. And that they make a decision at the start of the season, communicate it clearly to all of their stewards and anyone else who asks, and bloody stick to it.

I always remember Mansfield away, we only had 50 there in the away end that holds 1,500+(?) and their stewards were trying to make us all sit down and making reference to Hillsborough. They were shocking.

In an ideal world we wouldn't play in a stadium that is 5 times bigger than what we need and we would not need percussion instruments to get the crowd going. Sadly one stand doesn't join in with any kind of enjoyment as they are too busy raising the average age by about 46, sucking on Werthers Originals or just moaning. Without our drum home games had become very morbid as any sound made is the equivalent of a mouse farting in a payphone booth.

They wouldn't be allowed anywhere near football grounds but like others have said they are bearable if played well. We used to have a really good drummer which did improve the atmosphere at home games, now we've got some idiot on it who is dreadful and has pretty much killed what little atmosphere we did have at The Deva.

The home team drummer at our away game at Lincoln was fantastic. He kept going for practically the whole 90 minutes with a large group of singers around him. They completely sounded out the arena and we were frustratingly forced into silence because we could not be heard.
The flip side is of course is that when FGR scored the whole stadium went very noticeable deadly quiet (apart from the cheers of the away fans) which must have unsettled and depressed the home team's players while boosting the morale of both the away team and their fans.
FGR don't have a drummer and the volume when a goal is scored is not so acute, for better or for worse.

It's a football match, not a concert hall. All musical instruments should be banned from football grounds, not just drums. If you can't make enough noise at a match with your own vocal cords then you're doing something wrong.

We used to have a snare drum which was awful, now we've got a big bastard drum and it's actually really good. Awful if you're at the game with a hangover but definitely improves the atmosphere
