Manchester City really abused Silkyman's human rights with this performance tonight.

I'm hearing that Pep led a fracas in the tunnel and Aguero physically assaulted a Wigan fan.

They don't like it up 'em, do they?

All turned a bit ugly at the final whistle with Aguero flinging an elbow into a Wigan fan who said something to him and Arteta having to restrain him from doing something he would seriously have regretted and City fans tearing up the advertising hoardings and throwing them at the cops. Pep was livid at half time too, was surprised he didn't get himself sent off.

I have a theory about the yellow card the referee had out too, because when I saw it back at the time I thought something about it didn't look like he took it out to book Delph and then changed his mind. He just takes it out of his pocket, writes something on the back of it, puts it back and then takes his red card out and shows it without really hesitating. My theory is that he was jotting down a minor infringement he had seen around the same time, the sort that can lead to a yellow for persistent fouling.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Ah bollocks. Very frustrating after dominating possession and shots and all that but that’s the risk you take in the cup. The only annoyance I have with the Delph red is that Aguero was done in the first half and it wasn’t even a booking. And while you shouldn’t need that to win this sort of game, it might have made a difference.

Wigan defended well and blocked everything. Fair play, it was a perfect cup tie performance.

What ref has ever done that in a straight red situation in the history of ever?

I think when you see it from the referee's POV then it's a blatant red, you see Delph fly in, studs raised, leading leg at knee-height and send Power flying. It's only when the pundits view it in slow-mo at several different angles that they decide the ref made a mistake because Delph's dangerous leg isn't the one that makes contact. Even then, it was quite a wild challenge.

I'm a tad worried by this. The referee got his yellow card out.... .and it transpires that he had already written Delph's details on it, which indicates that his original intention was to issue a caution.... when he was surrounded by a mob of Wigan players demanding a red card which he obligingly produced.

Disregarding the merits (or otherwise) of the offence for a moment, it looks very much as if a weak referee cracked under player pressure.

The antics that followed were disgraceful. If managers can't control themselves, how can they expect their players to behave with composure and discipline? I've not seen Pep Guardiola respond to any match situation like that before so his anger was surely genuine and I'm quite sure it was borne of a feeling that the referee was not in control of events and has allowed himself to be suborned.

Personally, I feel that a red card would have been justified, but that is not for the Wigan players to decide. The referee must be the one who makes that decision either by himself or with the assistance of other officials such as Assistant Referees or VAR, not a mob of players.

The only thing last night's events will prove to do is to encourage others to get after that particular referee in the future. He's shown that he can be got at....... will buckle under pressure.

Not a good precedent to set.

Ive watched football for well over 45 years and this trash I'm watching tonight Swansea vs Sheff Wed is the most mundane boring sideways backwards crap I've ever watched.
No one wants to make a forward pass, it's bloody ridiculous
OPTA stats for you, it's an obsession for the players, I've got a 100% pass rate but everyone of them was sideways or backwards

Not going to be 7 goals for Swansea tonight unless it goes to penalties!

I’m watching it too and it is proper shite, so boring and no real attacking of any kind. Typical “safe” football.

Well Swansea won in the end thanks mainly to the change made at half time to bring Ayew on.

Wigan vs Saints is the only QF without VAR.

Seems fair....

Never seen this game but can understand how you feel. I've been saying the exact same for years now. It's so frigging frustrating.

VAR causing chaos in the Spurs/Rochdale replay tonight. Spurs goal disallowed by VAR yet seemed incorrect, penalty given after VAR review (took ages to make the call) then goal disallowed when Son stopped on his run up. So could have been 3-0 at this point rather then 1-0.

And now Rochdale have just equalised. Love it.

On the face of it, VAR has got them right. There was a foul in the build up to the goal and you can’t stop in the run up to a penalty.

Can’t actually remember if the foul occurs where it starts or finishes for the penalty? Either way, great cup tie and Rochdale are doing really well.

VAR is having a nightmare.

How they can rule the first goal out for a pull when the defender pulls him first is beyond me. So it's a foul for one team but not the other?!

I reckon the penalty should have stood too, calling that out is like calling out a goalkeeper for holding onto the ball for longer than he should do. Everyone does it, despite the rules, so why pull him up this time?

The time taken is ridiculous, ruined the first half.

Spurs 4-1 up, taking the piss now. The only positive of all the first half commotion was the hope we had for Rochdale when in reality their fans should have been on the coaches coming back home at half time.

You can just see a major game in the World Cup being decided by VAR - and not for an obvious clear cut error which is really what VAR should only be used for apparently.

But it seems the poor refs cannot trust themselves over a slightly contentious decision.

It hasn't got it right. You can stutter your run up. You can't feint the kick of the ball, but can on your run up. If you stop during the run up then the ref is supposed to stop play, order it retaken and warn the player not to fully stop.

you can’t stop in the run up to a penalty.

Misinformation. There is no law that states this.

Feinting in the run-up to take a penalty kick to confuse opponents is permitted as part of football. However, feinting to kick the ball once the player has completed his run-up is considered an infringement of Law 14 and an act of unsporting behaviour for which the player must be cautioned.

PDF of the law: http://www.thefa.com/~/media/files/...-interpretations-of-the-laws-of-the-game.ashx

Ref got it badly wrong.

On VAR... it takes far too long and has frequently lead to the wrong call being made anyway. I was one of what seemed like the few who never wanted it to begin with but even I didn't imagine it'd be so awful. It's excellent at killing hype/atmosphere though. Imagine Aguero's winner vs QPR being checked over for 5 fucking minutes.

Edit: Keeper was off his line for the penalty btw, as they always are.
