I remember last year i’d decided that whoever we got be it home or away I was gonna go to it, then we went and got drawn away at Plymouth.

So I changed my mind.

Hoping Kidsgrove beat Hartlepool and make the first round, be great for the ex Valiants there and another local club.

We tend to get shit draws or get non leaguers who either take us to a replay or knock us out.

Ford United
Canvey Island
Scarborough
Chasetown
Stevenage
Dartford
Grimsby
Maidenhead

off the top of my head since the turn of the millennium who we've failed to beat first time round or been knocked out by...

Only Nailsworth has been a non league salvation for us in recent years beating FGR and Shortwood first time out!

To be honest when we tend to get to the third round its always a crap tie like Burnley or Huddersfield... the other season we got to the Forth Round facing Plymouth and Championship Brighton in the two draws where the big boys where!

I was at Vale Park for our cup game, Manny Panther had one cleared off the line virtually straight from the kick off and I remember we were then hanging on a bit second half to try and get a replay.
Our first year in non league we lost to Tamworth in qualifying and didn’t even make the first round so I remember just being happy to be playing a proper league club again at a nice ground.

Nothing can be worse than our two games v Woking last year surely? Either a local game at home or a team we've never played before please.

I’ve always fancied doing Halifax away, if they make it through I’d take them.

We’ve had a couple of good non league ties in recent years - Dover, Sutton and Billericay. And we’ve actually won them all too and haven’t been knocked out of the first round since we’ve been back in the league. We had an absurd run of home ties (like 10 in a row or something) too which ended when we got Newport away in the second round last season when we lost 2-0.

Hitchin, St Neots or Hemel Hempstead would be the best draws for us. Any League 1, 2 or top half Conference side will probably beat us home or away but we’d have a chance against a Conference North, South or lower side.

Failing that I want Wrexham away purely because I’ve got mates there and I could combine it with a weekend on the lash which would soften the blow of the inevitable knock out.

Edit: I love the cup and a good cup run. It’s great to play and beat different sides, be part of the draw with some quality clubs. And if you get to the third round and land someone like Leeds or Man Utd it’s just amazing.

I remember in our non league days we drew away at Salisbury City in the first round and the winners of our replay got drawn away at Sheffield United, we were all planning a great away day there and I was really looking forward to it.
Would anybody like to guess what happened next? :ffs:

Fully expecting something along the lines of Wycombe away. But Stockport, Wrexham or Southport away would be terrific. That or vs one of the more obscure teams Met Police, Slough ect.

Anybody but Peterborough would be a good start. Ideally a non-league opponent we haven’t faced before.

I will be very interested to see how Swindon do in the 1st round. Phil Brown at Southend literally could not be bothered with cup competitions. Some of the worst team performances came in the FA cup 1st round. I don't know what he used to say to them before the matches but if it was 'don't bother lads and we'll get a weekend off in December so I can top up my tan.' then I wouldn't be surprised.
We lost at home to an awful Chester side and last year one of the most negative hideous games at Yeovil pretty much sealed his fate of turning the majority of the crowd into wanting him sacked.
Swindon-Southend coming out of the bag on Monday and Brown winning is of course now nailed on

Lowest ranked side at home please. I am sure we will get Peterborough now that I've moves out of the country though.

Failing that, a side that is a sure bet for tv coverage is the next best thing. I'm thinking of Sunderland at ours, or away to Salford. And yeah, I know this would all but mean an early exit but at least we'll get the tv money, which we (well, Strang) would then spunk on a 36 year striker.

We’ve been crap in the cups for about 10 years now so it sounds pretty standard for us.

I hope we get some tinpotter so we can get through. really want us to have a decent run this year and finally get to play a top Prem side, Man City would be a good game I rekon, two of the best passing sides in the country facing off. Would be a lot of goals.

This, but always away. Chance the game will be on the box, new ground for fans to visit. Slightly less embarrassing to lose on a non-league bobbly pitch than on the carpet at home. Met Police or Haringey Borough away would be perfect, but we'll get our usual drab game against a fellow League Two team. I'm going for Bury at home. Appealing to exactly nobody.

I still partially blame our 8-1 national embarrassment at Swansea for fucking up our season last year, at least we can’t blame the FA cup this time around...

I don’t think we’ve had a decent draw in the first round or anywhere else for about 7 years so can’t see any reason for that to change. This team appears ripe for some non league humiliation.

Anyone but a National League team will do - 4 of our last 5 FA Cup defeats have come against National League opposition, on two occasions in the second round having beat teams above us in the League in the first round.

To be fair is there a such thing as a decent draw in this competition? Non leaguers are always a banana skin and there is only League One and Two sides to face aside from that, the majority who most of us have played regularly over the last few years.

Sunderland is probably the only one, mainly because away you get decent money and at home if you have a large enough away end such as Vale, MK, Notts County who have 4000 plus away ends and you'll make good money and be on TV so even better.

Any non-league team would do just for the novelty of not playing the same lower league sides again.

There are a few I’d like for selfish reasons (York to visit the girlfriend, Alfreton because of their ‘Fake Dons’ post, Burton because we’ve never played them in a competitive game). But honestly I’d be happy with most teams in the draw. Just not AFC or Charlton please.

I'd just add - not 'king Chesterfield again.
