I'll be showing my age here but the football season's over so.........

Sting deserves no more than a mention coz I had a Makem "mate" who looked and sounded like him, with an ego to match. McCartney gets up my nose, always has. The Ox was definitely background but essential, as were many other heroes. Lots of great ladies, especially Tina Weymouth, that leave my choices standing but my votes follow my progression through the music scene and go for:

• Anyone playing with Captain Beefheart - Rockette Morton (Mark Boston)? Roy Estrada, ................Fast n' Bulbous...
• Noel Redding
• Gerry McAvoy
• Jack Bruce (with little enthusiasm but he was a MUSICIAN)
• Dee Dee Ramone

Have a look for Tal Wilkenfeld, especially her work with Jeff Beck.
One track is called something like 'Cos we've ended as lovers', live version, but there are plenty more worth digging out.

She received (brief) consideration but doesn't feature on any of my FAVOURITE tracks with an essential bass line. I'd put her down the Jack Bruce tributary of bass playing .......and I'm already regretting putting him ahead of Dave Pegg.

Geddy Lee - Rush
Just ridiculous at what he does, his playing style has changed hugely over the years but he'll always be integral to why I picked up a bass in the first place.

Nolly Getgood - Periphery

Ryan Martinie - Mudvayne
Has so much style, love his playing style and energy and really put Mudvayne into a league of their own when LD 50 came out.

Dirk Lance - Incubus/Willie's Nerve Clinic
Has a bass tone to make you cry, his early Incubus riffs were different to anything I'd heard at the time. Still love him now.

Brian Marshall - Alter Bridge
Does nothing out the ordinary but his tone is meaty and goes right through you in the right way. Lovely use of octaves that bring more out of Alter Bridge.
