I stuck with 17 and skipped 18, which was supposed to be a bit crap. Been playing as Blyth Spartans in 19 after doing a season in the PL to get a feel for the game. Promoted first season and now in mid table obscurity about a third of the way through my second season. The game plays well and the new features are nice but the UI is really cluttered and ugly.

Anyone upgraded the graphics at all? I downloaded the df11 graphics pack and the addin to make the player pics better.

Just a shame that its lacking in the lower league update, as majority of the wrexham squad has now been replaced with pictures at least 3 years out of date -
Much improves the premier league experience though.

So only 3 weeks in to pre season. Signed donal McDermott on a free and some whizzkid called Abdo, previously of Villa.

Impressed with the warchest wrexham have actually, makes a change!

Game is chugging a bit on my laptop, so might take me a while to get going. So far so good though

In the absence of a Lincoln game, I had an afternoon of it on Saturday and only 12 games in, but it's much better than the previous two versions.

Still need to have a proper look at training and tweak the tactics once the players are familiar with the formation to see what needs doing, but the 4-1-3-2 that I always try and use has worked fairly well so far.
Coming up to December now and with a week off next week, I'm hoping to get a bit more time on it.

Squad familiarity with the tactic is just about there, then I can start tweaking because we concede too many for my liking (8th best defence - slowish backline vs high line probably the issue there but wanted to see if it settled and improved with familiarity first).

Unusually, I haven't signed a player yet. Sent back four loan players that were because they were a mixture of not very good and too high a wages.

Don't play with wingers, so I've got two to get rid of, albeit one already out on a season long loan.

Weirdly, Tom Pett, a CM, has his best position as a winger and can't play CM very well so not sure what's happened there.

EDIT - Tell a lie, I signed a young lad on loan from Leeds who's my top scorer. Names escapes me.

Am I the only one who can't get the defence right? I'm conceding shit loads, regardless of

I usually do a season run just to get to grips with it but I'm in my 4th season now and no matter what I try, the defence leaks goals. The players are good enough for the division I'm in. I've tried direct, short, defensive, attacking, 2 in midfield, 3 in midfield, anchor man, no anchor man and nothing is changing.

I got 19 over Christmas and just finished season 1 with Chesterfield in the Conference, won the league fairly easily but struggled for goals, had a lot of 1-0, 0-0 etc. Is there any lower league strikers knocking about either on loan or free for league 2?

If I go into the season with this side i'm sure i'll struggle.

Mark Cullen scores shit loads as a pressing forward (attacking). He's usually available for £50k in the second season.

Kun Temenuzhkov from Leeds on loan also scores a lot as an advanced forward. I've had him on loan for 4(!) seasons and always gets 25+.

Both the above probably need to be in a front two, though.

What formation to do you to be so tight defensively?

Just checked and Cullen's got 11 in 14, 14 in 24, 25 in 48 and currently 8 in 7

Kun Temenuzhkov 29 in 43, 25 in 55, 30 in 53 and currently 3 in 7.

Cheers mate

I've been playing 4-2-3-1 - varying up the mentality home and away - away from home where I am more cautious the defence in particular has been solid - when more adventurous at home I have found myself conceding a few more.

I finished the season with 67 goals for, 38 against. Not started in league 2 yet but will look up those 2 when I next play.

That's maybe where it's going wrong on this one because I don't play with wingers and haven't done on FM for years and years. Maybe that's an important part of this one.

I've holidayed my save for a season and made sure the tactics are stayed the same and my assistant has done about as well as me. I then holidayed from the same point again but let the assistant choose and he faired a little better in a 4-4-2 but still conceded loads of goals so I'm not really sure what the answer is!

Has anyone noticed how there seems to be so many long range screamers on FM19?

No word of a lie - and not sure whether it's an accidental by-product of my set up - but I scored 130 goals in my first PL season with United (I know, sorry) and so far in season 2 I have scored 40 in my opening 10 games?

I seem to concede shit loads of free kicks on the edge of my area, even when I've got stay on feet selected. More often than not, they go in.

I only managed one season in my original save as Barrow in which I tried to have a positive approach, but ended up conceding left right and centre. Scored a decent amount as well and ended up mid table, but probably only kept about 4 league clean sheets.

As I wasn't very far advanced I thought I'd start again with the updated database, switching to a counter attacking system. Kept clean sheets in the first five games and conceded three in each of the next two games. Four of which were direct free kicks, funnily enough.

Anyone still on this?

I'd gone 4 or 5 months without playing but started a Leeds save a couple of weeks ago. Still can't get it quite right but the results are a bit more stable than previous tries, which makes it a bit more enjoyable, with a slightly worse than average defence and a slightly better than average attack.

Maybe it's the better players in the Championship that have made the difference but I'm going to try and tweak the tactics again.

For me I find that you either find tactics that are wildly successful, or ones that'll have you fighting relegation (unless you start with a big team in the league, but I never find that much fun)

There doesn't seem to be much in the middle

For example, currently have Salford in the PL having won consecutive promotions from the conference.

i tried downloading the sortitoutsi live database but it annoyed me as too many things hadnt been updated, and it wouldnt load up in the database editor as it was a .xml file

so plodding on with my database update, only do the top 5 leagues and major european transfers

but generally, i start a game, get through the transfer window which i find the most exciting part of the game, play a few games, normally up to first international window, then get bored. i very rarely get to January on a game. i think the longest game i have played on FM19 is 1 season!

Still on FM18. Just back into it after a long break. Took Maidstone to the Championship in 5 seasons then I randomly got the Sevilla job and so far it looks like I’m out of my depth. Won 1 of our first 7 league games which for Sevilla isn’t great. The only mitigating factor is a really old squad and no money for transfers but that won’t wash with the board. Already resigned to the sack, my tried and tested 4132 isn’t cutting it in La Liga. Switched up to a 4231 but results aren’t picking up, missing countless chances and some really poor defending is costing us and me my job soon enough

Up with Leeds in my second season via the PO's.

Too many draws in a 6 week injury crisis put pay to automatic hopes but I was about 5th best attack and 5th best defence I think so a further improvement on the season before.

so i have updated the FM19 database for the british and major European transfers, and also managed to figure out how to apply the points deduction and transfer bans to Bolton, Bury and Chelsea respectively. think if i ditch Bury from the game then it will have a proper wobbly so will have to leave them in under administration.

will be interesting to see how the leagues progress, i may even be silly enough to try and sort out Boltons plight and rise from the ashes!
