Comfortable in the first half, get ahead and then manage to defeat ourselves rather than be beaten.
Same as last week. :brill: Lost count of the amount of goals we just gift.

Nothing new, going 1-0 down and getting 3 points seems to be what we're good at.

The less said about the first half the better, no quality and uneventful for both sides.

Second half, Rovers came out the better and had a few chances but didn't convert, then Gills scored off a really scrappy but poorly defended set piece where every defender got sucked in near post.

Got to be honest, even though we usually throw away the first goal and come back I saw no creativity from us to get back into it. Then some individual pace by Lines and a good return ball from Taylor helped by a huge gap in Gillingham's defence got us to 1-1.

I think that would have stayed the case, then Gills took off Dack. Don't get me wrong, not a hold up player or target man but he was finding gaps to atleast keep the ball up the pitch. Think that showed and Gills lost it. They looked an unconfident side, after our first a lot of heads dropped.

Good three points for us and finding ourselves a nice position in the league in some good form.

Very poor performance, but 3 points is a good thing however you get it! Would have said the same with a point, but with Gills slowing the game down from around 60 mins there was always a chance they'd crumble.

Was a bit surprised by Gills, didn't expect that style at all. Must be different from last year? Sure they had an off day but wasn't impressed by either side today!

Happy with another win :)

Gillingham were very poor today. Didn't deserve their lead but everyone is taking the lead against us now. That's 8 games in a row that we've gone 1-0 down. Don't mind it too much though as we keep turning it around!
The officials had a shocker in the first half in missing a blatant handball and sending off for Gills' keeper.
Up to 8th with a game in hand at home to Fleetwood.

Have to say Gillinghams style of play shocked me, the talent in their squad is wasted with that system. Despite being nowhere near our best, still deserved the win. Have never seen a team drop to their knees like they have lost the Fa cup final over an equaliser though, the Gills clearly have huge confidence issues.

What did you actually expect from us? We went into the game in freefall, having lost to two of the worst 2 teams in the league in our last couple of games (Oldham and Wimbledon) so it's not an 'off day' as you put it, we're genuinely knackered. We definitely don't have a style to speak of, so all comments of opposition fans being surprised at our way of playing are pretty weird. No-one knows who our best 11 is, no-one knows what formation we can play successfully with the squad we have and it's all a massive mess.

With the investment on offer in the summer we should be challenging up the top of this league, but it's been spent pointlessly in some areas (central midfield particularly, which ridiculously has been an achilles heel all year) and not at all elsewhere where it's actually needed. We're trying to shoehorn Dack into the side when to be honest he needs to go away for a month and lose some weight, and whatever 'formation' we have to operate to get him in the side just doesn't work.

Up front we have several players who more or less do the same thing. None are particularly quick, none particularly strong, none that great in the air, so we have no gamechangers there. We have 3 wingers in the club. 1 is out for the season, 1 is a kid and the other is coming back from injury and keeps getting subbed off early when he needs minutes.

We have ONE right back at the club. Chris Herd can play there but surprise surprise, he's more of a midfielder. We have 4 senior centre backs attached to the club - only one is ours. One is a kid on loan from West Ham, who's given away a couple of penalties for stupid stuff without really playing that much. One is a kid on loan from Bournemouth who we signed in August and hasn't played yet, which leaves the one we actually own and the other on loan from Cardiff. Ridiculous.

We also went into the season with one senior keeper and a kid. Senior keeper in question had an absolute nightmare start to the season and threw about 5 in his own net. Signed a loanee from Reading who looks 'fine', but he's been injured too.

Which brings us on to our ridiculously populated central midfield.
Wright
Knott
Byrne
Hessenthaler
Herd
Osadebe
Oldaker
O'Hara (ok he's gone now, but why did we sign him?)

These are the options to play ALONGSIDE Dack. 7 individuals who are all capable of starting, all challenging for a couple of places when there's other positions on the field that weak players are just walking into. Pretty criminal. Best thing we can do is drop Dack and build a midfield that actually works, but we know that won't be happening any time soon.

But the worst thing about this season is that we're clearly being taken for a ride by some individuals. JET takes the piss, a few penalties and 2 decent games do not make him a good signing. Konchesky has been really average, and to think we released Brennan Dickenson (who tried, was excellent going forward and seemed to care) and signed this bloke. Ryan Jackson has been utterly shite all year, clearly living off a decent first 6 months with us. At least Jamie O'Hara offered to cancel his contract rather than take the piss, so fair on him for that.

The crowd is turning on the team, the manager can't last much longer and we're tied into contracts with some presumably decent wages attached. After an excellent 2015, 2016 has been an absolute clusterfuck since January - bear in mind we were top in January and managed to finish 9th scandalously.

8 defeats in 11, no clean sheet in 24, losing to sides we should be picking up points from (no disrespect to Rovers, it's more about Wimbledon and Oldham, but I would've expected us to be able to get a point today) doesn't make for confidence building stuff.

I'm done ranting, and now I'm going for a lie down.

I don't know what Dack has done this year, but even forgetting his reputation I thought he stood head and shoulders above Gills other players so I wouldn't slate him too much mate.

The shoehorning big budget players into a team does seem like the problem though and I wasn't the only one to say that. We're very much a team, Gills looked a group of individuals. Edinburgh will need to sort that quick if he's to stick around

He needs to stop pissing about with the diamond formation to include Dack (I know he didn't do that today) and play the best player for each position. He's built a squad that doesn't actually fit the system he likes to play, and as a result we're suffering. Much like Roy's England at the euros having spent the qualifying stages playing a system that he knew worked for the players at his disposal.

Part of me thinks JED was waiting for a windfall from the sale of Dack which never came, didn't think about decent cover at the back or consider the use of wingers and so we've been left with a lop-sided squad way too heavy in midfield.

Personally I hope Dack goes in January and we decent fee, however, at the moment, that might be too late for Edinburgh to be given the chance to rebuild.

I thought we were well worth the win. Played some great stuff second half and we just don't know when we're beaten. What I really like is the abundance of attacking options we have. We've got our early season shit spell out of the way and we'll be fucking hard to stop .

Are you driving or training it mate?

I got the train in the end (to Montpelier), and went in to Bishops. At £2.39 a pint, Sky Sports, and a bookies 5 doors away, it was a no brainer.

Shame about the match, which I think I predicted the correct result earlier in the thread. :ffs:.

I think we looked very rusty after 2 weeks without a game. It was probably our worst performance of the season but we still just about deserved the 3 points. More possession, more shots, more shots on target.

First half was very poor from both sides but I thought we started the second quite well until we gifted the Gills the lead. Although we huffed and puffed for the next 20 minutes we were no where near our best and didn't really look like scoring until Lines superb run and finish. Always felt after that we might go on to nick it and that proved to be the case.

On yesterdays showing Gills are the worst side I've seen this season but I believe they have a number of injuries so are no doubt better than that.

As said, nowhere near our best but still run out victors. I'll take that.

What is great is that we have such a strong squad now. Some very good players are being left on the bench and some are not even in the squad at all, which means we can freshen things up for the trip to MK in midweek if DC decides that's what he wants to do.

As an aside, I'm delighted Linesy has his first league goal of the season. It was a trademark Lines goal of old - a surging run from midfield, breaking through the opposition defence and confidently sliding the ball past the keeper. Hopefully we'll see him hit the back of the net on a much more regular basis now because he's definitely got it in his locker.

A lot of Gills fans on social media have made the point that "you're nothing special, we always go 1 up and lose", but the thing is we have made a habit of going 1 down and winning :bg:.

Two teams who didn't look that good at all yesterday, probably due to the fortnight break. We edged it though and deserved the three points. Expected a lot more from Gills based on them having some very good individual players and half of last seasons form, and honestly this was the first game in weeks where I went into it thinking we could lose despite Gills form. Assumed they would have to click eventually but I don't watch them week in, week out so what do I know?

That said, another 3 points where we really could have punished them even more if we played how we have against other teams in recent weeks.

The fact that we actually played better on Saturday than we have for a few weeks, and still we were shit, gives you a fair indication of how bad we have been so far this season.
Justin can get his coat whilst we should go get our Jackett.

I'm honestly not sure who that is....

Was trying to think earlier of players who've played for both clubs in the last decade or so and I drew a bit of a blank! Can anyone think of any...? I'm sure there must be a few random loanees!
Can't believe you have not heard of him. Was in the days of Dick Tydeman & Brian Yeo. Mind you I am an old fart.

I know those two! Dick was introuduced to the crowd before Charlton on saturday.

I am FAR too young to have seen them in action though
