That's the issue though, isn't it? "Not going down" is hardly an achievement, is it? Sunderland shouldn't be finishing 16th every year, much like Villa.

Not sure what their strategy is. Frankly I doubt they have one...

They want stability and a bit of consistency, like most established PL teams. Poyet never brought that to the club and his attitude at times was embarassing for everyone at SAFC. He's amateurish, just like Di Canio was. And as i said in the summer, his transfer business was just plain hilarious. A monumental fuck up. You can dress it up any way you want in an attempt to justify your earlier opinions, the fact is he failed miserably. They've not improved in the slightest and he's been rightly sacked after being torn apart by the team with the least attacking threat in the division. The guy had a 23% win rate ffs. Awful, awful manager.

The board won't be worried about the potential embarrassment of being relegation as such but the money it would cost them..

The appointment of Advocaat seems a bit strange to be honest. He's never managed in England and has ten games to save a Club from relegation. regardless of whether he keeps them up or not, I think they could do a lot worse than bring in Big Sam.

I'm sorry Lee but that's nonsense. In 2013 the Guardian reported their wage bill was 8th highest in the league, and their net spend has been +£11m and +£27m in the past two seasons respectively. How in any way is treading water, competing with the likes of Burnley and Wigan for the coveted 16th place for the past few seasons in any way good enough for a club like Sunderland?

In all fairness GG, you've quoted one line and not the context around it. With what he has now, his squad is no better than a 14th-17th placed squad, especially with the firepower and aging defence. My post was trying to point out whether this is Poyet's fault or not? I'm still not sure.

Just to comment on the spending part of your post, Di Canio spent £15.5 million on Altidore, Giacherrani and Mavrias.
He did make a lot of frees but on god awful players. Diakite, Roberge, Cabral, Celustka, Karlsson etc. I think it speaks volumes that I barely remember their input. Perhaps even more crucially, he shipped out Sessegnon, McClean, Mignolet and Elmohamady. Although not outstanding, Di Canio severely weakened and bloated that squad with his dealings.

In Poyet's only summer, he made 4 free signings, Buckley for £2.5 million and Rodwell/Van aanholt for undiscloed which surely doesn't equate to more than a few million at most.

So when you consider that, I ask you, has Poyet been financially backed? How is he expected to clear up Di Canio's spending spree mess if he hasn't had any money to do so? He's had to clear out the no hopers, retain an average core and put his faith in players like Rodwell, Van Aanholt etc who were once ladled with promise but have massively lost their way.

I honestly look at that squad, combine that with the money Poyet has been able to spend and don't see that he could be doing much better with the resources he's had to play with.

The Rodwell transfer is reported to be closer to 10 million we bid 15 million for Borini and we have Ricky Alvarez on loan who if we survive we're obliged to buy for about 7 million. I know these are all just reported figures but it shows he has had funds to strengthen. I had high hopes this season after how we survived, and he has managed to screw it up with his tactics, decisions and letter writing.

If that is the case, £10 million for Rodwell is ridiculous. City didn't buy him for much more in the first place and he did naff all there and missed a ton of development/playing time. Poyet deserves sacking then for that alone.

Looking from outside, the failings of successive managers appears to be merely the symptoms of the problems at Sunderland. Something has been rotten in the state of that club for some time and I think Ellis Short has to take some blame.

I got sympathy. Sunderland are horrible to manage, I tried to clean up PDC's mess on FM but got sacked. They've a squad laden with shit, gotta give any potential manager a few windows to sort out that mess.

Can you really blame Poyet for the figures though? Surely that would be down to somebody else?

Sunderland will continue to get worse if they keep changing the manager every 18 months or so, it seems as though there is very little long term planning going on

As I said the root cause of their problems is not the manager. Something is rotten in the state of Mackem.
