Has Jabo scored more goals in August than your team?

Jabo is brillant, proper player with a proper attitude towards the game. Strong as an ox, superb with his back to goal. Think he got 10 or so twice for us. Always gets a round of applause when he plays against us.

The man is a legend of the game, the only player ever to master the art of football. He will score at least 100 goals this season.

Jabo was more than a target man for us, he had pace, power, happy to run at players with the ball at his feet. He had it all, he was seriously unplayable... And then he had to deliver an end product. Single handedly kept glaziers in Leyton in business from all the broken windows in Brisbane and Windsor Roads.

That when he was still fairly raw?

It will forever be a mystery exactly what has changed, but it is probably just a confidence thing, as Clinton Morrison said. I'm sure with his previous goal-scoring record, just to get one goal against Mansfield on the opening day was a big boost for him and since then he seems to have an air of someone who just knows he's going to score goals.

Although I don't remember anyone saying it at the time, the goal he scored against Wimbledon was his 100th career goal. It probably helps that we're currently set up to just score the maximum number of goals possible and he's been placed at the heart of that. We'll probably have to tone things back a bit soon, as soon as Curle decides he can't keep hoping that we just get better at defending without requiring some sort of tactical change. The current run we're on though, while it hasn't brought us too many points, it has given us amazing morale. I can't remember a time, since we got promoted to L1 where morale in the squad was as high as this, and Jabo just seems to be feeding on it all. We're probably at the stage though where we need to just start winning, and therefore stop conceding. If we only get 6 points in September like we did in August then we'll probably start to look destined for a lower-half finish and the morale will fade.

Alot of people don't realise how badly injury prone he was with us in his early years.

March 2000: Makes league debut away at Northampton in a 2-1 loss.

2000-01 - Burst onto the scene, Scores his first goals in a 2-0 away win at Macclesfield on the last day of the season - We had to win to secure a playoff place, he was then thrown in at the deep end into our playoff campaign after Carl Griffiths was sent off for violent conduct and had to miss all three playoff games, plays a blinder in all three of our playoff games is unlucky not to score in the final as he hits the post.

2001-02 - Everyone thinks he is going to be the bees knees, but his season is stop start with injuries but he gets a few goals.
2002-03 - See above, although he gets around 6 goals a season.
2003-04 - See above, still gets around 6 goals, but also chips in with assists and game changing moments.
2004-05 - His season ends away at Darlington in a 3-0 defeat in December - Out of action for 9 months.
2005-06 - We get promoted. Jabo returns in September 05 against Barnet, scores and makes one, gets 10 goals in a season.
2006-07 - The initial step up to League One is tough for him, Ling transfer lists him but moves to Brighton and Wycombe fall through, he comes back into the team though and helps us stay up with goals and some good performances.
2007-08 - Out of action until September, comes back in September away at Bristol Rovers with us 2-0 down, he changes the game and has a hand in all 3 goals IIRC and we win 3-2. This proved to be Jabos final season with us, he signed off with a goal in his last game a 3-1 win against Bristol Rovers on the last day of the season. Martin Ling finally decided both he and the club needed a change.

Everyone thought he'd make us £1million+ he had so much potential. His injuries totally slowed him down in terms of progress which is why he finds himself as a lower division journeyman.

Still, always gave 100% for us and every team he has played for, he'd have played higher if he'd stayed fit IMO.

I'll never forget an 18 year old Jabo running rings round Hull and Blackpool in our playoff games back in May 2001, he had so much potential.

Yeah I think you might've caught us at a bad time. We'll see how Vale goes.

This thread is going to be embarrassing if Jabo's goals start to dry up.

Ronnie Moore's twitter feed makes fantastic reading. We've got some proper nutters managing down at this level, we come up against another of them next Saturday.

On a related note, I wonder how much Andrew Boyce is regretting saying of the hoofball he expected us to play “If it’s up in the sky, there is more chance of getting to it”? Doesn't matter what altitude it's at Boycey... all that matters is if it's close enough to Jabo for him to put it in the back of the net.

Have Hartlepool conceded more than Billy Paynter has scored?

Since Saturday they have! :D

Yeah but we're not a one trick pony are we?? One of our CB's got a beauty on Saturday. If Jabo get injured, which has been known, you're scuttled.

I hadn't forgot, it was a beauty, but he's not doing that every game is he? Out of the goals you've got, take Jabo's away and how many have you got? If it wasn't for Jabo, you'd have lost.

In fact if it wasn't for Jabo, you'd be bottom.

In fairness, if we were playing with 10 men every game I think we'd lose all the time.

And?

How many Hartlepool fans and pundits have I read who have said Carl Magnay's injury was the turning point on Saturday? That he's been one of your most important players... so how many points do you think you'd have thus far had you not had Magnay? Take our best player away from us and of course we'd have been worse, that's why we signed him, to make us better.

And for the record, we'd have scored 6 goals without Jabo, which is only two fewer than your tally, but had we not had Jabo I'm sure we'd have been set up more to get Charlie Wyke goals and he'd have scored more than the 1 he is currently on, not 9 of course but also it isn't quite true to say that had we not signed Jabo we'd be 9 goals worse off.

Well of course it's all theoretical innit??

But those six goals would have got you one point.

I know, it's like the daft argument about cup draws, 'if we'd beat them we'd have got Manchester City,' when in fact it doesn't mean that at all, but these debates are what it's all about, eh?

Watching Football League Tonight, as he normally does, after his goal, Jabo ran straight to the nearest area of fans to high five them all... what a class act that man is.

Just noticed that Jabo is still above 7 other teams in terms of league goals, and has the same amount as 5 others. Surely he can't get to the end of September with more goals than some of you?

Seeing as how we're playing some of those teams, if we can start keeping clean sheets he may well do so.
