I think Gerrard will be remembered more than the vast majority of Premier League winners due to his unwavering loyalty. So in answer to the question, no.

It looked pretty wavery when he was 99% signed for Chelsea...

But he didn't sign and instead spent his whole career at one club when he could have gone to pretty much any club he wanted to? If he wasn't loyal, he would have gone to Chelsea, Madrid, Munich etc.

If he was as loyal as you and Liverpool fans like to make out and praise him for, that saga would never have been a saga. It would have been Chelsea bidding, Liverpool accepting and Gerrard telling them to get fucked.

The fact Liverpool had released a press statement that he was off speaks volumes for his 'loyalty'.

Also, he hasn't spent his 'whole career at one club' - he has agreed a deal with someone else.

Fucks me off when people say Stevie Gerrard is a one-club man when he isn't.

Haha, somehow I completely forgot that he was going to LA Galaxy when I was making that post. I guess he isn't a one club man.

I still believe his reputation is heightened more for choosing to stay with Liverpool due to his loyalty and not going wherever he could have gone, due to his ability, to win any trophy he wanted. He didn't go to Chelsea, so his loyalty was unwavering. I'm sure anyone with the ability Gerrard had would at some point in his career question such a move. He did question it, but chose to stay.

If it was unwavering he would never have even contemplated moving to Chelsea. That's what the word means. He's a club legend because in the end he didn't move and he definitely deserves that status.

What i'm trying to get at.

Great player.

Liverpool legend.

But you can't make out he was 100% loyal to Liverpool given his serious flirtations with another club.

Yes. Steven Gerrard is a total failure because he doesn't have any children named after the legendary chant by fans of Norwegian club Vålerenga "Kan jeg låne din tråler på tirsdag?". ("Can I borrow your trawler on Tuesday?")

Fucking loser.

Nice to see you're still the same mase...

I understood that, it was the club's fault. He's had the opportunity to leave every single summer, so your desperation to cling onto one episode that was Rick Parry's fault is off.

He spent 17 years at one club. The kind of player he is, dragged his team to victories. Captained the side, never shirked a tackle, never sat in the reserves happy drawing his 100k + pay every week. Gave 100% week in week out for 17 years. That to me is loyalty, never mind that he may have once spoken to another club.

It is a real shame his legacy has been tarnished by what was an unfortunate slip last season. I was listening to the Chelsea fans last night delighting in singing songs about it, and I thought, this is going to be his legacy as much as Istanbul or cup finals. A few months ago he could have been a hero, a title under his belt, a world cup winning captain etc. Now he is that GBH committing diver who did after all let it slip.

Shame.

well yeh it does really in the context of making it as a league medal winner

He failed to win a league title, he didn't fail as a footballer, which is what the thread is asking.

Istanbul sealed his legacy as a Liverpool legend. To suggest he has failed because of a "title-losing" slip is just trolling at best. Sure its always good for a laugh when the Liverpool fans get gobby but it takes nothing away from the man's achievements as a footballer

For most clubs I would agree that was enough. But the fans who he helped to a victory in Istanbul were out burning shirts with his name on a few months later. I think they were just starting to forgive him for that when he slipped up and handed the title away. Then he opted to leave again. He should have just left for Chelsea and got his winners medal instead of staying at a club whose fans sent him bullets in the post.

I think his status is overrated because he's a local lad that was a very good footballer in a period when the club was crap. That makes him stand out a little more. You also have to consider that a whole generation of Liverpool fans only have Istanbul as a moment of witnessing their team winning something really significant, that's another contributing factor to his perceived legacy.

He's also a lot older and more multi-talented than you'd think. I was watching "The Third Man" the other day, a film from 1949, and much to my surprise...

...there he was. I had to screenshot it as proof.

Maradona, Ronaldo, Nedved, Viera, Ballack, Bergkamp, the so called beast Ibrahimovic, and your favorite CANTONA have never won the CL, the biggest trophy at club level. Would you consider them failure too??
