I'm not sure how that is seen as anything but a positive given the situation. Allardyce is a man who has been appointed to several jobs where the club he has taken over were up shit creek. On every occasion he has gotten them out of it.Allardyce is only good for teams who are fighting relegation in the Premier League.
He got Bolton promoted and turned them into an established mid table side with European football to boot. After he left, they've gone down.
Had a decidedly average spell at Newcastle, had good and bad spells but was let go by Mike Ashley, the season after that they go down.
Takes over at Blackburn after Ince who left them in the right shit. Nailed on for relegation. Kept them up comfortably, finished mid table the following season, but was sacked when they were midtable the following season to be replaced by Steve Kean! (Remember that c***?). Blackburn go down.
West Ham. Despite massive changes to the squad he got them promoted at the first time of asking. In subsequent seasons he achieved mid table finishes. Contract not renewed because the fans didn't like his style of football, a criticism that was with him from the start of his tenure and not because of results. West Ham have gotten better since his departure. Probably the only club to do so. But y'know, Bilic.
Sunderland. A side that narrowly avoided the drop in the last few seasons left in a precarious position by Advocaat. Plent of time to get it sorted though and needed a good transfer window in Januar to sort things out, but look at the squad he's had to work with and keeping Sunderland up is a good achievement.
Basically West Ham aside, he's taken groups of players who have been underachieving and got them playing to their level. That or he's made players over achieve by doing what others haven't and kept them in the league, comfortably too.
His brand of football is bad. Not Pulisball bad, but not far off. But he's never had the players to show much else. That's in part due to his own choices in the transfer market but also the budgets of the clubs he's been in charge of.
I think results wise Allardce wouldn't be too bad. Style wise is another matter. But at least he's got a fucking style.
