Bit of a discussion going on Tranmere forum about educating negative fans on the impact they can have, but also the home atmosphere in general.

From what I’ve witnessed so far this season, we have the noisiest home support by some distance. But yet to visit Lincoln who did have a good atmosphere a couple years ago.

Wonder where in the league people think has the best home* atmosphere?

*quite a few clubs with good away support.

We’ve got a block where some of our younger fans gather and have made abit of noise a few times this season to be fair to them, Great to see but you’re not wrong with the negativity of home support. 3rd loss of the season for us Saturday and a minority actually booed them at FT, aswell as jeered one player off as he was subbed.

It certainly isn't Blundell Park! Not helped by the fact most of the singing fans sit in the Pontoon where all the noise just drifts out the stand into the River Humber barely reaching the 6 yard box!

The atmosphere at our place is like a morgue and has been for years now. Under Di Canio the place was rocking, but since then we have gone backwards and there is a real feeling of 'meh' around. Our fans are quite expectant and we have been absolutely pants at home for the last 2 years that next to no atmosphere is generated on a regular basis.

What app do you use to measure the noise out of interest? At what point of the game do you tend to measure it? After a goal?

You should post your results, I think it would be interesting.

No apps. Or post goal.

General atmosphere. That I’ve witnessed so far away from home the only fans that made any effort were Bury and Cheltenham but that was about 50 fans.

We used to have big issues with that, but having an owner and manager the fans like come out and criticise it actually stopped the majority of it. There’s only a handful that do it now but they really stand out.

There was a small group (5-10) of Tranmere fans that actually booed at half time on Saturday. Curiously they were the first to surge to the front when we scored each goal.

Our ground and fan base have the potential to create a cracking atmosphere but to do that we really need a decent away following (Luton, Lincoln, not many others in a league match since Grimsby's first season) that puts numbers of away fans on the South Habbin Terrace. Even then I suspect that the poor sods in the South Stand miss out because of the yawning chasm between them and the pitch/goal.

It's a lot easier with more modest away followings when we play on an evening under the lights.

On my travels, over the years, ground and stand layout have had more impact than actual numbers. All seating is an enemy to atmosphere. Fatty & Shouty's Rotherham v Bradford (FA Cup after a wasted trip to Bury) was pretty good. Holker Street when Barrow turned over Lincoln in a televised match with minimal away support was also pretty good. Of current L2, no one comes close to Lincoln at the moment. There were some good atmospheres in the Conference but results have drained the enthusiasm recently. I'm sure Exeter will come good again with 4 sides in use. Tranmere were on the slide when I've visited and the crowd were not helping.

Ours is crap unless the opponents bring a large following but assume thats standard for most teams, at the moment crowds are the lowest in decades and the fans are bored and pissed off so it isn't great.

Lincoln had a decent atmosphere the other week, they were pressuring the referee as one with Cowley and screaming for everything so the are all as one there certainly. I suppose it is easier when your winning for three seasons solid mind but doubt we will play in a better away atmosphere than that.

Considering our away support is, IMO, the best in the league for generating noise and atmosphere, at home it's absolutely bobbins. I put it down to BP being a dump in the main (aside from the JR Stand) and the fact we've not had a decent stretch of home form for fucking donkeys' years.

When we were last in league two and indeed when we ducked up winning league one only two years before that, the fans being so quick to turn on the players had a huge part in that in my view.

Fast forward to Mellon arriving and that all changed, even last year when we were 19th or whatever in November there wasn’t any major discontent within the ground, everyone knew it’d turn around if they stayed behind the team.

We only really make a noise when there’s a decent away following and/or it’s a local derby.

We actually can make a real noise, the atmosphere on Boxing Day against bury was pretty decent, but it was also be flat as a pancake.

Ours can be very good, particularly as we’re very lucky to have a big terrace that’s usually well populated. We have the ‘Red Legion’ who do sing a lot and there’s a drum etc but occasionally the atmosphere can be dull as fuck when things don’t go well.

It certainly helps that we now have four open standa but sadly we don’t have many good away followings this season to make a good all round atmosphere. Looking forward to Argyle coming down next season...

Noticed the new away end was covered in Exeter flags/banners last weekend, is that the intention, where did you put the away fans?

Blundell Park is pretty awful for atmosphere unless we’re giving someone a walloping, I take my lad in the Pontoon and if we’re not already ahead by around 10 - 15 mins in you start to hear all the dick heads getting on the players backs, proper boring bastards a lot of em in there but it’s also the only stand that really makes any noise so my lad doesn’t want to go in another one as they are all pretty dead.

Init strange, I've done a fair few grounds this season and Tranmere, even though they won - Had probably the worst home support out of the lot in terms of vocals. Crawley were also pretty poor, but they usually are anyway.

Notts County have had a decent noise behind that goal in recent years, when I first started going Vale we used to be in the big stand behind the goal and the ground was a morgue but since moving the away end its been one of the better ones.

When away teams bring more than a 100 or so they get the terrace behind the goal as well as the end of the main stand.

At this moment in time, we have a great atmosphere at the Bank and a decent away following who generally make themselves heard.

It hasn't always been like this so I am definitely not going to put down any club who are not having the best time right now- we've all been there.

The 617 Squadron group of fans (Upper 7 and a bit of Lower 7 of main stand- the ones who don't sit down all game!) were created around 8 years ago to generate some atmosphere and, as crowds have grown, the atmosphere has got better- particularly as they sing for the whole 90 minutes and mainly when the rest of the crowd join in.

As regards away grounds- some many teams, in previous times, have had some excellent noisy home fans (Grimsby, Vale, Swindon, N.County etc) - our home noise doesn't make us "better" fans than anyone else- we just happen to be very noisy at the moment.

Looking forward to Oldham and Tranmere visiting the Bank particularly during 2nd half of the season.....oh, and Grimsby on Saturday :)

It will still be 8,500-9,000 for the mid week game- away end won't be as full (same when we played you at your place in November) but it will still be noisy I'm sure.

Yeah fair fucks to Lincoln tbh, although a lot of the people who go every week now didn’t go very much 2-3 years ago, the atmosphere is really good, particularly for a ground that’s only got one proper stand.

Vale used to be good, as did Tranny and Oldham, but haven’t been to either of those two for a while. Grimsby always seems decent for the size of the crowd, but that’s maybe cos I’ve seen us get beat there more than most grounds.

We pep up when we’re doing well obv, and being in the Kop when in full voice is always great fun. Big crowds don’t always make for noise though, 15,000 sounded like 150 last Saturday(other than the Cambridge fans).

Yeah the game against you last season was by far the best atmosphere of the season that I went to (I went to around 2/3rds of home games) which was of course due to the importance of it, can’t remember celebrating a goal like that for a very long time just sheer relief when Jamille Matt popped up.
Saying that too the point I made earlier about gettng on the players backs, there was a guy just behind me calling fuck out of Matt even whilst we were 1-0 up, then when you scored it reached toxic levels of abuse and then a minute later Matt heads home the winner and suddenly the guy loves him.
Prick.

He’s right . When the away fans occupied the Kop , unless it was a big game the atmosphere was nearly always flat with only a small pocket in the county road miles from the away fans generated home noise. I was in fact against the move to put home fans in the Kop . Happy to report I was very wrong it’s been a huge success . Compared to a lot of grounds I’ve gone to our home atmosphere is definitely better than most .

In the old days you could just a few hundred away fans in that huge stand with its huge roof and they could make quite a lot of noise and outsing the home support . During more successful seasons the ground has been bouncing on many occasions

Ours is shit and has been for a while because of the poor quality football that's generally on offer and the general malaise and ill-feeling around the club. Only filling a quarter of the stadium doesn't help. The atmosphere is more toxic than anything.

toxic is a word I would use to describe the atmosphere at our place too. We seem to have overly expectant supporters that just expect the players to turn up on a Saturday and the 3 points will happen. Again, for league 2 we have a relatively large stadium, that is usually about 1/3 - 1/2 full/empty. There are attempts by supporter groups to get atmosphere going, but its all a bit 'meh'

From the games I’ve been to it’s standard fare for us really... last week aside, it’s only a good atmosphere if the away following is large or they start singing first so it Spurs our fans into action.

Our away support isn’t particularly vociferous really, mainly because we’ve been awful away from home for years. It doesn’t help that the typical group of lads at the back who are supposed to start the chants make up their own new chants every week that nobody else knows and thus no one joins in.

Sorry to have to disagree with a fellow Rovers fan but our home support , other than for the Lincoln game, has been nowhere near as good as it was the last season and a half in the VNL. The atmosphere during that period was fantastic but since we got back into the league most games its seems to have gone very flat for some reason. The away games I have been to our support has been brilliant and is certainly as good as anybody elses it has to be said.
