So Caldwell it is. Odd appointment on paper, but there was a rigorous selection process so have to trust they've seen what they wanted to see.

Think the word we're looking for is 'underwhelming' - but, did say al the right things in the interview this morning, and will give him our full support*

*Until half time, tomorrow night anyway.

What an extremely strange appointment. I know the list of applicants for a wee little club like Exeter will not really set the world alight but surely there was a better option than this.

3 years out of the game and seeing the reaction from Chesterfield and Partick fans is enough evidence of wjat you are getting I would suggest. Had a decent season with a cash strapped Wigan and has basically failed miserably everywhere else. Not the sort of manager I was expecting to be brought in to be working on a shoestring budget.

Great day to be an Argyle fan and another £10 placed on Exeter to be relegated this season.

Appears to be almost Sheridan-esque.

It’s not the type of manager I’d associate with Exeter being interested in.

Time will tell re Caldwell. Certainly comes across well so far and got a good first result, but want to see how he does over 20 games or so, before drawing a conclusion.

That said, if he manages us to victory next week against those dirty Janners and we should give him a new deal.

If I were you I would look for the next Graham Potter, look how well he did at Brighton. Luckily for you we have one in stock along with some magic beans.

I’m sure it’s everyone else’s fault!

Can’t see much sympathy coming from Burslem for the bloke.

He was so wed to knocking the ball around the back for 90 minutes rather than adapting to a game, guess as he said with 80% of the division being anti football his talents were wasted in league one!

I don't like to see people losing their job but this guy was deluded, arrogant and never accepted responsibility for his own failings.

After we beat Swindon fair and square over two legs he didn't show an ounce of humility instead talking about his players being assaulted (which in spite of dozens of cameras there is zero evidence for). He and his odious Swindon team had thought they had won it after the first leg with their comments...it was the most satisfying result I can remember.

He then called us anti football because we stopped his Barcelonaesque team from playing the other week. The excellent Liverpool team from the other year stopped the opposition from playing first by pressing....are we supposed to just sit there and watch them play? I honestly can't stand the tactic of possession for possessions sake...FGR used to do it and were somehow lauded as this wonderful possession based team. Possession means nothing unless you do something with it.

What an odious prick and I'd be amazed if he gets another job in the league.

The reason they lost the play offs remember was that “the pitch was too dry and we wouldn’t wet it for them” yeah because we are going to doctor the pitch to suit you! Then the other week the pitch was too wet. Guys a clown, pleased for Charlton he has gone.

He wanted all Vale fans banned from Wembley who went on the pitch because it broke the rules as well… yet two weeks before Swindon fans invaded the Walsall pitch.

As mentioned he thought he was off to Wembley after the first leg and that seemed to filter through to Johnny Williams and co which pretty much fired us up. Smith talks about it in the pod about the arrogance they saw.

He was just a very unpleasant fellow and one I’m chuffed we beat again. On the flip side though Charlton do need to sort themselves and stabilise a bit as seem to be still issues off the field to sort.

if only everyone watered their pitches and played the brand of football that ben garner felt was acceptable, then he'd have probably won a few more games.

total bellend.

I see Charlton are apparently interested in England U20 manager Ian Foster. We were interested in the summer before we appointed Mark Kennedy but he wanted to take charge of them at the then U19's Euro's.

He had a few games for us the year we won the Conference (2004). He's probably a better manager than player.

Not a surprise really. Dreadful start and dreadful home form with no real sign of any change. They've left it as long as they could. Wonder what that means for Manning.

Our assistant Mike Garrity has gone to QPR to be back with Neil Critchley after they met his release clause.

You never hear too much about him but by all accounts he was very good setting up a side out of possession and we've done really well with that in the last couple of months. It'll be interesting to see who we replace him with, it took a while to sort an assistant out in the summer and I can't imagine it'll take as long mid-season.

No, they couldn't leave it any longer. Something dreadfully wrong as that team is better than relegation fodder. It just seems that while things were going well, he was fine but can't fix it when it turns bad. Also last years team was not his, it was Russell Martins and they continued playing the same way. It seemed a good appointment as in not rocking the boat but now :ffs: From almost autos to relegation contenders in six months is not good.

I still like Manning but as you say, what for him now.

Do you think he was stuck in his way of playing and wouldn't change it?

I wonder whether it's an Academy coach thing where, because results don't really matter, you just keep doing the same thing because Appleton was very similar (albeit more experienced in management than Manning). That was a slight concern some had with Kennedy, me included, but he's shown a willingness to move away from his ideal formation/way of playing to pick points up.

Dean Holden named Charlton manager.

Not the most inspiring of appointments?
Dunno how Jim Rodwell keeps getting jobs at Clubs, I've never heard a good thing about him.

Part of the dodgy Boston era under Steve Evans I think, can't recall him being a great success at Notts County, not particularly popular at Scunthorpe either etc etc.

Danny Butterfield has left Southampton's Academy to join us as Assistant Head Coach. Was Tisdale's assistant in their L2 promotion season apparently and has worked with Mark Kennedy before at his brief spell at Macclesfield.

Was a decent player back in the day as well.

New coach appointed at MK - Mark Jackson from Leeds.
I don't know him from Adam but Leeds fans aren't happy.

Big loss for us, big gain for the franchise bastards

Big loss. Can understand him moving onwards, but that shower of plastic shite? Really?

Oh dear.

From my point of view I'm not sure an untried coach in charge of a team with no confidence in a relegation battle is wise. We shall see.
