It looked like Liam Manning was going to be getting the job but bookmakers have gone back to making Wilder 2/1 favourite which I still don't see happening.

I'm not sure if club officials have been scouring social media for the reaction to a potential Manning appointment and seen that the reaction, at least online, has been very negative which might have put them off?

I'm sure the fans would be more welcoming if Darrell Clarke was the man, but I don't think our cheapskate owners would fork out the compo for him.

I'd love it to be Clarke just for the Vale fan meltdown

Would be initially disappointing but understandable with the location. We’d get some decent compensation and have Crosby at least who managed us for about 40% of our promotion season last year so guess it would be business as usual in that respect.

Vale fans are getting increasingly nervous about this Portsmouth job. DC doesn’t appear to have been around the club in recent days, wasn’t at the FA Youth Cup tie against Liverpool last night (all the other coaches were and made a point of going in the dressing room at FT), Crosby has done todays press conference (talking about going for promotion which DC doesn’t do!) and in Brad Walkers farewell he doesn’t comment like he did on Hall last weekend.

Would be a humongous blow.
More plot twists than Glass Onion. Clarke has definitely moved up in the betting. It might explain the lack of an announcement this week while they possibly haggle over compensation. Clarke may be trying to get it knocked down so he can move closer to family.

Still, what we'd lose in compensation we'd more than get back by not having to replace all that kit with "DC" on it.

DC shooting up the odds is because some Vale fans starting putting 2+2 together regards him not being at the youth cup tie last night or doing his presser and thinking they’d throw a speculative few quid on him when he was at 40’s. Obviously then others have seen what happened and thought someone knows something (I doubt they do) and followed suit. All of which is a longer way of saying they know absolutely nothing.

Not to say it couldn’t happen, it might well do but to an earlier point re DOF’s this is why we have one in Dave Flitcroft in place so as there is that continuity if say we lost a manager. I was somewhat taken aback when Crosby pretty much out loud said we were looking to win promotion. That talk never happens at Vale normally.

Yeah a lot on OVF are throwing a few quid on just to feel better if he goes!

Some suggestion he is Ill with Covid or Flu but nobody seems to know.

There’s been no talk or rumours which you’d usually expect that he is in talks from either end but we will soon find out one way or the other.

We know Crosby would continue the job in the short term at least and we would put money in to replace.

Imagine if Wilder wants it the job is his although Manning is back favourite again.

Precisely and then acting shocked that the market starts moving :dk: Seriously if someone went on there now and stuck a tenner on say Steve Evans he’d almost instantly move into or near the top 5 of favourites these markets are so small.

IF DC were to go then Crosby would be the automatic choice for me. Knows the setup and has experience already covering in the worst kind of circumstance last season.

Don’t think he wants the manager role does he? Would be ideal as it would be seamless.

We would be disappointed, but with our structure the DoF would soon get someone else in and things would carry on as normal. A bigger blow would be Flitcroft leaving.

Crosby maybe until the end of the season if there are no decent options, but I dont think its his plan to be number 1

Our recruitment is based, I suspect, on two key tenets. First, a team ethos of our approach to playing, which every team from the under 8s upwards follows. Second, every decision is based on data. The DoF and Head of Recruitment identify 5 or 6 targets for each position they are looking for. They are chosen on data, headers won, tackles, passes, amount run etc etc. For example, both Dan Scarr and Sam Cosgrove were widely attacked by many fans and other commentators. The options are then presented to Schuey and his team who suggest an the order they want them. the Head of Recruitment then goes off and tries and get them. Quite a few of our targets have been in England age groups that our DoF coached.

Because of the sheer amount of time the players spend together on the road and in hotels, we have a no knobheads policy now.

We have had very few duffers, so it seems to work. It is very clearly based on the Brentford model.

Tom Pett (vice Captain) has been online gaming on twitter and said DC isn't leaving.

We've been promised an appointment within 48 hours. Grant McCann is now bookies favourite. However, I don't think anyone knows anything so could still be one of McCann, Liam Manning, Ian Foster or Darrell Clarke. I'd be surprised if it's anyone outside those.

McCann would make sense. Has promotion experience at this level, and we wouldn't have to pay compensation. Also, he's had plenty of experience as a number one and so shouldn't be so affected by our boo boys. I'd prefer Clarke of the four but wouldn't be surprised if comp was preventing it.

At the end of the day, everyone would just feel better having someone / anyone in place so that we can move on and try to steady the ship.

A McCann type would certainly steady the ship and stop the rot, but it goes against the supposed new modern set up with a coach working in tandem with the sporting director to imprint a club philosophy.

The performances of late and angst amongst the fanbase appear to have moved the goalposts at least for now if it is him.

As you say, anyone would be a welcome addition at this point.

For what it’s worth here is what DC has said to Radio Stoke re the Portsmouth job, definitely looks like those who took a flyer on him won’t be collecting any winnings

Well, the end of the transfer window is rapidly approaching and still no sign of a head coach. The club have managed to make most fans no longer care who gets the job. They could announce Saints icon / conspiracy pedlar Matt le Tissier now and we'd probably be OK with it.

Imagine Appleton getting the boot today could see a twist?

If we were to appoint Appleton, I wonder if the board will have the audacity to claim he was our number one choice? I really don't think it will be him though and there is whispers of a 10pm announcement. We don't work that quick as a club.

Appleton was manager when our chaotic financial decline really got going and we were relegated from the championship. Arguably despite the chaos, we still had a side good enough to have stayed up that season. The following year we were a basket case though and he understandably walked midway through when Blackpool came calling.

Appleton and Kevin Nolan are both suddenly in the mix, betting-wise. I'd say Appleton is very unlikely as it would mean that this whole process has been nonsense. Nolan? Who knows at this stage.

I still think Ian Foster is the likeliest but what the hell do I know. The local press were pretty convinced that an announcement would be made either yesterday or today and still we wait..........

At this point I can't see it being someone who is out of work as it surely wouldn't have taken this long to appoint them. The Foster rumours are gaining traction as John Keeley resigned from Crawley today and he worked with Foster here before.

But what do I know? Could be someone totally out of the blue. I just hope it's not Kevin Nolan, Liam Manning or Michael Appleton. Would be underwhelming to say the least.

Foster is getting linked to a lot of L1 Clubs now, it only feels a matter of time before he leaves his England youth role.

You'll not appoint Appleton because a) you've been there and done it, b) Blackpool wouldn't have sacked him if they knew you were going to come calling and c) I don't think it'll be good for his reputation to have managed three Clubs in 9 months.

Lincoln fans. What is your view of Appleton?

We are now 2 1/2 weeks post sacking Cowley and still yet to appoint. Clearly managers targeted have turned us down given the length of time. We're potentially reaching desperation stage it would seem.

Logically Appleton will now come in to play, and ironically at a club straight after Danny Cowley.

Who is in charge of the search? Our old DoF?
Appears to be him and our CEO.

The problem is that he would presumably have a list of inexperienced coaches who could step up. But we're winless in 15 games and sleepwalking in to a relegation battle. There is a fans protest planned on Saturday and just generally a toxic feel surrounding the club, and the american owners for their apparent under delivery. The comms coming out of the club have been poor for a few years, so no one really knows what's going on.

It'll be a tough gig for any manager, let alone someone taking their first job so i think the criteria has probably changed from his FGR days.

In the managers absence we have signed a young defender and released a couple of loans, so he must be doing something.

He's relatively young and inexperienced himself. At times like this you could probably do with someone with a longer contacts list.

Local news reporting Oxford player John Mousinho is under serious consideration. What the actual fuck is that about!?

Yup, it's Mousinho. An absolutely bizarre appointment that will be a massive gamble. It's either a genius masterstroke but, more likely, an absolute clusterfuck of a disaster.
