His cancer has returned for a second time, cancer has no age limit sadly, at 28 though you feel it's so unfair he's got cancer again! Fantastic to see all the support on social media for Joe, wishing him a very speedy recovery. His attitude towards it all is top notch:

Joe Thompson has issued the following statement...

Hello to you all

It is with regret that I have to inform you that my cancer has returned.

That given I will fight this life hurdle with the same belief, courage and desire as my previous battle.

The support shown to me since I discovered my illness has returned has been immense.

I would like to thank my wife, Chantelle, who was my rock in my first encounter and will once again be by my side with the same encouragement, discipline and strength. Not to mention the love shown to me by both my wife and beautiful daughter Thailula-Lily who are both my motivations daily.

I would also like to thank the Manager and his Staff, there are no words to describe this group of people. They gave me an opportunity at the beginning of the season and I hope I have repaid their faith in me with what some say is the best form of my career. Also, to my teammates, this unique group of Players who all believe in each other and keep on over achieving.

To the Board and the fans of my hometown Club which I am so honoured to have returned to and so proud to wear the shirt of, thank you for the warmth and support you shown me upon my return and continue to do so.

A big thank you to my Union too, the PFA, especially John Bramhall. Their support commenced within hours of my diagnosis and me and my family are extremely grateful.

I came back from a goal down before, not only to equalise, but to take the lead. This illness may have found an equaliser but the quest for me to get the winner starts today and I can assure you I will get the most important win of all time.

Thank you to you all.

Met him during his one season stint at Carlisle last year. Really nice bloke. Terrible news this.

Wish him all the best and hope he boots the cancer away for good.

Very sad to hear this and hope Joe is able to battle the returning disease and get well again.

The illness first appeared when he was with Rovers and we had a minutes applause in the 7th minute for Joe 7 being his shirt number with us. Talk of doing the same this weekend to show our support for his current battle.

Read his interview in the paper today, the lad sounds determined to fight it and beat it again. Great attitude and you stand a hell of a better chance of beating the vile disease with such a positive approach.#

Come on Joe lad, all footy fans are behind you, you can do it.

Never heard of Joe Thompson, but that statement is both moving and inspiring. He appears to be an amazing guy, a credit to himself, his family, his football club and football in general. Hope in his own words that he gets not only the winner his determination deserves but also a few extra goals to really beat this awful disease into submission.
Puts our moans and groans about our respective teams into perspective.
Good luck Joe Thompson, not just from me but from the whole football family.

Bugger, when I saw the headline I thought the poor bugger had his cancer return again, again if you know what I mean. Bloody glad to hear he's OK

Great news, would be fantastic if he could resume his career again, if not he has still won his biggest battle.
