Maybe the EFL needs a stand-down rule which takes things out of clubs' hands. Big case in Australian RL recently (similar situation to Ched Evans) where a leading player had two hung trials and the state eventually dropped it.

He was on the books while allowed to train but not play for more than two years. (Within weeks of coming back he was one of a group fined and suspended over a party breaching covid rules.)

Can you trust his wife coming out and defending him? Not so sure it holds much weight for me
Depends, if it’s on the basis that she’s defending he never hit her - then no. Screams domestic abuse.

However she’s saying she nor anyone else is accusing him or violence towards her, we will wait to see what happens today.

Impressive how many experts there are out there though

It’s not a case of nobody accusing him. Obviously someone hit her.

In cases of domestic abuse the CPS prosecutes even with the abused saying nothing happened - on the basis they may have been coerced or fearful of further abuse if they did.

It takes a lot for the CPS to prosecute without the abused saying anything, from my experience. Must have been pretty damning evidence when the police arrived at the scene.

So trial set for December, but of a cloud hanging over him until then. Far worse allegation then the Stendel one, he’s gonna get wife beater comments everywhere he goes. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s suspended until then by the club.

"The court heard Barton allegedly grabbed her by the throat and kicked her in the head during an altercation outside the property, where they had been with two friends.

She was also left with a bloody nose following the incident.

The court heard Mrs Barton then called the police and asked for her husband to be removed from the property."

She rang the rozzers then and asked for him to be removed from the house…

Agreed.

It's only been 24 hours and I'm already done with this story :dk:

I don't think the club will suspend him tbh, if they were going to - they'd surely have done it already? Not sure how I feel tbh.

I am a strong believer in innocent until proven guilty, and that a private matter shouldn't be leaked to the press - shame on the police if that was them. I actually don't believe any details should be released about any case until a verdict has been made.

On the other end, its pretty standard practice to suspend employees whilst this goes on. I'm guessing Wael is fully aware of the details and is behind him, but either way - I expect a statement one way or the other in the next 24 hours.

Joey Barton's a facking c*nt,
He beats his wife if she confronts,
If she ever tries to reply,
He'll stub a cigar out in her eye.

If he’s not suspended now that more details are known that’s a very bad look from Rovers.

Statement released:

Domestic abuse is a "victimless crime" apparently.

According to a Rovers fan on another forum a lot of fans are losing their shit over this.

It’s quite clear who the victim was, pretty awful from the club tbh

Accordingly, the Club is unable to make any further comment other than to quote the Crown Prosecutor this morning who said “this is a victimless crime. No one has made a claim of assault”.

Sorry if I'm being a wally here but if nobody has made any claim of assault why is this going to court? I guess this is why we should avoid newspapers in these kind of events but I read that Barton allegedly threw his wife to the ground and kicked her in the head. So does this mean that his wife now has decided she doesn't want to press charges by saying there was no assault? I'm a little confused.

It could be that she or the person who made the complaint has withdrawn it but I think the police can still go prosecute if they have enough evidence though.

Victimless prosecution, Wife isn't pressing charges, not unusual in domestic violence cases.

Pretty poor wording from the club tbh.

This, basically.

I assume there must be other witnesses willing to testify against Barton as otherwise there really is no case.

The club has taken a quote out of context without fully understanding it IMO and used that as their reasoning not to suspend him.

Think Bristol Rovers must have got a media intern to write that statement who clearly doesn't know what a victimless prosecution is. Very poor.

There are security cameras everywhere these days. Thats how Barton got caught for the incident in the phone box.

There were 2 other witnesses present. CPS dont take cases which they dont think have legs. It's about time the cu*t got done.

I suspect they very much will. Which no doubt he will love. I'm fairly confident Bristol Rovers won't be kicking off the new season with him in charge, surely its not worth the negativity surrounding the club. You would also think female fans are unlikely to attend with Barton managing.

I think everyone does that anyway. I know I did when his Fleetwood team played us
