Glad we are out to be honest. The fact you can only rotate half the squad seems ridiculous. Agree with what Wilder said afterwards, said fans clearly don't enjoy JPT so should ditch it entirely. Would anyone care?!
I just read what Wilder said and i'm in total agreement with him about scrapping this tinpot cup. I have never been to one match in this competion and never will no matter how far we go even Wembley.

I can only ever argue that by saying I've followed Carlisle since about 1988 and have in my time witnessed 4 promotions and a play-off season.

that means I have seen all of 5 great years and all the other 22 years have been either average or awful and I'd actually class myself at a club which has been one of the more fortunate ones in terms of things happening.

the only things which keep you going for me anyway is cup runs and that odd big game here and there.

If managers got their way and we ended all cup games completely (because LC and FA cup is as worthless to prem managers as JPT to our managers) and we got left with just league games only...................man we'd have to sit through some years of absolute dross to get our odd 1-2 years of enjoyment.

but I do understand the interest is little until later parts, but I always firmly believe removing the cups would really hurt fanbases because if your club has a poor or average season and cups are gone you frankly have zero reason to bother going till next season.

plus if a club cannot play 6-7 more games it frankly deserves no promotion as team is simply no good enough, nor manager.

I would also add that with the attitude your manager has I'd write off top 3 for your lot, for me usually our best managers have simply just wanted to win every game.....may pick a weaker side, but always want to win and have that arrogance of frustration when losing a game.

I think if we have a manager 'not fussed' at losing then I'd be worried.

I like the JPT, one of my best days as a Luton fan came in this competition.

I would definitely be in favour of scrapping the 6 players from previous game thing though. It seems absurd to have that for this competition and not for the League Cup or even FA Cup. Why should it be okay for big clubs to make 11 changes for those competitions if they feel so inclined and not for us to do so in the JPT?

I enjoyed the game yesterday, for what it's worth, but the gate was about half what it would be for a typical league game and with reduced prices, so it's clearly not that attractive to most. I think the principle of having a cup competition for leagues 1 and 2 is sound as what else do most of us have to get excited about year after year, but it clearly needs some thought as to how it can be made more interesting for the fans.

there isn't a way to make it interesting until your in the area semi final and that is the problem.

but the problem is if you scrap this because its not interesting for L1/L2 fans then you also have to scrap lower league clubs out of the League Cup and Fa cup because we are not interesting for premiership clubs or managers who find games with us lot uninteresting and a distraction.

and that is why managers down here are foolish to mouth off about it because it gives prem sides their chance to meddle and interfere, it is at most 6 more games, if your side cannot play 6 more games then really it isn't good enough anyway.

Yeah I don't get the apathy for the JPT. It's kind of like those managers who don't try for the Europa league when there is a legitimate chance you could make a good memory for your fans and put yourself in the record books for your club. We went to the millennium stadium as a L2 team in this comp and on the way beat Bristol City and it was a good memory for us Rovers fans, we'll never win the FA Cup so a knockout competition with a fair shake at giving it a crack where you'll probably draw a club close by in the early rounds is fine by me

Good chance of a decent crowd in the final this year that southern section has lots of teams who can take 30-40,000.

you have Bristol R, Southend, Plymouth, Gillingham, Millwall, Oxford who would take lots and even Yeovil could take 20,000 odd.

Good chance this season for a Morecambe or York to make a nice bit of money if they can get through to the final and it isn't impossible we did it 4 times when in L2.

and for them L2 southern sides, if say Sheff Utd got to the final against a Bristol R, Plymouth or Oxford you could look at a 70,000 plus crowd......makes it worthwhile.

Not sure how many you're expecting Bristol R, Plymouth or Oxford to take but id be amazed if we took more than 25-30k if we reached the final.

Anyway, thanks for the penalties Notts Co

Not to mention that our JPT run in 2007 provided us with momentum for our play-off win a month later. Win is a win in my opinion. The JPT isn't on my list of priorities, but I still want us to win every game!

Go and play in the FA trophy before moaning about this one. Makes the Football League Trophy look like the Champions League!

I see your FA Trophy and raise you FA Cup qualifying...

Fair enough, I wouldn't have us down for top 3 anyway. But here are Wilders comments

When asked how he’d spice up the competition, the Cobblers boss said: “Sack the competition. It’s an opportunity to get to Wembley but that’s so far down the line.

“I’m not a lover of the competition. I think we play enough football - we already have the League Cup and the FA Cup.

“I always want to win every game and it’s the first time I’ve said this, but something has to happen to spice it up a little bit because you look at all the crowds in the first two or three rounds and it only really gets going when you get to the area semi-final and final.

“The biggest thing for football is the participation of the supporters and if they don’t fancy it, then why do the clubs fancy it?

“So there’s got to be something done about it.

I can see both points of view. League games feel a lot more important than any cup game, but I have been brought around to another way of thinking under Darrell Clarke's management.

He said pre-match that he much prefers having us playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday because if you're winning you can build some momentum and if you're losing you have an immediate opportunity to put it right. I think it's a good point. Yes it may be a JPT tie, but it's still a competitive game and one that can ultimately lead us to Wembley.

His attitude coupled with his desire to win every single game actually had me looking forward to yesterday's match, which isn't something I can say of JPT games in years gone by.

Oh come on! Conference teams only have to play the last (4th) qualifying round in the FAC and that's on a designated Saturday for all Conf teams. Very different to the FAT fixtures and replays, which take precedence over league fixtures and cause havoc for Conf teams, especially those aiming for promotion.

Ignoring it's new name - how can you have National League North & NL South FFS?

sorry for late reply this forum would not let me reply yesterday for some reason.

I never read comments, just how it was posted here so now you've posted it I can see he at least wanted to win.

still think his comments are dangerous, he needs to remember we cannot give the prem reasons to dump us out of things just because they also don't want more games, we mess about with our cups, they will find reason to mess about with theirs.

to be honest the fairest way of doing things is very simple and just have 4 basic competitions.

* FA Cup stays same for everyone.
* League cup is only for Championship and L1 clubs - no Europe place anymore - Wembley final
* JPT is only for L2 and Conf Nat clubs - same format as now - Wembley final
* FA Trophy is for Conf North-South downwards.

Every single club then loses 1 competition, all managers can be happy.

Managers would probably be happier but owners certainly would not. Good chance of getting a big club in the league cup, as we can vouch for getting Newcastle earlier this season. By their standards 25k attendance is poor, but its a real money spinner for us. Difficult balancing act I guess.

Not so sure, Most L2 clubs will only play 1 maybe 2 games a season in the League Cup and they are all in the first 2 months when everyone is still fresh.

and that is my whole point.

We complain about the JPT being 'worthless' and managers would rather not have it, but prem sides find the LC 'worthless' and don't want to waste time playing us L2 and L1 clubs in that competition.

If we started removing one for our benefit, you can bet your life it'll effect others. When Prem sides also moan about it and it then deprives us of 2 competitions and only leaves FA cup.

IMO nothing needs changing. If managers really don't want the hassle of the JPT then play half a team of kids and go out in the first round. We won it in 1987 and so many Stags fans still talk about that day being the greatest day they've had following Mansfield, even those that seen 2nd division football in the late 70's.

I like the League Cup, You only have to get into the 2nd round and can draw a Premier League club which makes us clubs a fair bit of money. It's alright for Premier League managers, They can play there weakened sides/Youth players in the early rounds of that as they have large squads.

I felt good for you lot when you won it though, a bit of glory in an otherwise awful season. Your 'relegation' was slightly abnormal in the way it came about.

Hmm true, I just think having to qualify for the FA Cup was a bit more degrading! The Tuesday night thing actually swings it, I forgot about the awful scheduling. Probably because we were knocked out of the Trophy in the first round last year!

Yeah the National North and South thing makes no sense to me either, very non-league in its name though.
